Star Wars DVD Covers — Page 148

That explains that.

Interestingly, this whole project of mine started when I wanted to make DVD covers in the same style as the VHS tapes I grew up with.  But after looking at these scans and starting on the CBS/FOX style covers, I think all 3 of my VHS tapes were in the style of your FOX ROTJ box!

I'm continuing work on the CBS/FOX style, but if anyone has scans of the ANH/ESB FOX style (like EyeShotFirst's ROTJ scan), that would be fantastic to have as well.

@EyeShotFirst:

Any chance you could do a 600dpi-scan of your ROTJ-VHS and upload it somewhere? That'd be awesome!

I quite like the worn look, it would make very a very interesting Pulp Fiction poster style cover set.

I could try. the original scans do look better on my pc Ill upload em

{EDIT} I tried but anything bigger than what is on here already is spotted and comic book like. Sadly because I use a 50 dolla scanner and photoshop cs3 couldnt fix em LUKE ended up looking bad when i smoothed everyone out.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Sounds like Moire (interference created by the print dot pattern). If there's an anti-Moire / Descreen option in your scanner software, that should help considerably...

That doesn't matter, it's exactly what I need. Please just upload that scan, without any filtering (and no descreening in the scan tool either). I have some professional tools at work to fix those things... at least I'm gonna try.

I can also post my 1992 boxes...if you'd like.

ok just uploaded this baby on flickr. whole thing untouched its only 300dpi but thats damn good if you can photoshop it. The dots arent as visible anymore thanks to jonno's advice but 300 dpi was the highest quality my scanner could do. AND ITS NOT A JPEG ITS A PNG.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

http://www.flickr.com/photos/36050979@N07/3331621194/sizes/l/ just click download the large size. It should give you the png version this one below is a lower resolution jpeg. If any of yall clean it up and make a poster POST PICS. THATS WHY I POSTED IT I WANNA SEE LOL

I think that is a rather pretty image in it's own right (warts and all).

Some of the blerb on the back is hilariously badly written, how can an Empire be anything but Imperial (it's like saying the American Americans)? I wasn't aware that Han, Leia etc were trying to take over the Empire, I thought they were trying to get rid of it altogether.

It's not as bad as some of the early VHS releases in the UK which committed the mortal sin of calling Han, Hans.

Obviously I'm too stupid for this, as the largest size there is 572 x 1024, which is the size of the JPEG you've posted. And when I click the download-link, I only get that one, and no PNG. Any ideas?

Laserschwert, do you need more parts scanned of this images, to puzzle it with photoshop?

I own the old 3 US CBS Laserdiscs with this covers, but they are cropped at top and the titles are on different image parts. And they are too big for my scanner (If I got it plugged). But they have somebit more informations at left and right.

I also own the 3 VHS Edition from germany.. it has only a different "Das imperium schlägt zurück" Cover..

maybe they could help you to puzzle this...

(If someonme could get it alltogether.. you are the man.. I always liked your reconstructions of the LucasArt game Posters at crazycovers..)

I've been expanding on the poster thing, and there's still more in the pipeline.

Regarding SW: Actually I only want to do a clean ROTJ-poster, as all the others already exist as textless versions. Could you post a sample of the LD-cover?

I love the retro approach to custom covers (particularly considering how bloody awful the official design ethic has become), so I was all set to use MoveAlong's design for my Pwnage disc.

However, for a few pennies I laid my hands on an original UK rental VHS - a tape with particular nostalgia value to me - so I thought I'd have a crack at reworking its cover for DVD:

Photobucket

Of course, it should be used with a white amaray for the full effect:

I can make this available - and indeed the original scan - if there's any interest.

I had this version (and the original ESB and ROTJ UK versions) but I gave it away (what a silly billy).

I then got the first widescreen versions and gave them away too.

Finally I got the Executor tin set (is it worth much?) and I've still got that.

The sabre covers would make a nice set (and a prequel version could be made too but the Sith sabres are the most easy to recognise).

Definitely, Jonno!  Do you have Empire and Jedi versions of this style too?

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Bingowings: Yes, I've got those tapes from the Executor set somewhere too. The simple lightsaber designs were certainly nicer than the new 'paintings' on the individual versions (I guess it was around this time that LFL decided they needed to reinvent the wheel for every goddamn release!)

No idea if that set is worth anything, though as an aside the documentaries - MOSW, SPFX, CC and FSTJ - look far better on those PAL tapes than anywhere else I've seen them...

Ziz: Unfortunately the other UK rental tapes were a lot less distinctive:

I don't even have these tapes any more, though I doubt they're rare if anyone was inclined to rework them...

Ok, I thought it was a matched set, not individual releases.

Of course, no reason why that design couldn't be extended to the others (since we're trading in 'what ifs' anyway) - I might have a look at that some time.

Though it would be nice to have some discs to put in them - if anyone's successfully run the G-Force script on ESB or ROTJ, please let me know! :-)

Shit, this brings back some merories. I have all these vhs tapes. I paid (well I say I paid, my mother really) £56 for ESB bak in 84 when it was first released. Man I wathched that tape to death. Still have them, and all the other vhs released tapes too. I think I own the trilogy including dvd's about 8 times. What a mug!!! ha
