Thanks for your reply, focuspuller. I was aware that the "Unicorn" cue was also used for the film 'Antarctica', albeit in a different fashion.

While the film had the familiar mix of the eletronic "hunting horn" sound with the atonal chorus (which is the version presented on countless bootlegs), the BR DVD featurettes had the "hunting horn" in a previously unheard segment by itself (i.e. the start of the "Beyond the Window" doc) as well as the atonal chorus in another music segment by itself (approx. the 3 min.-mark in the "Eye of the Storm"doc). So when I saw how extended your version was, I naturally assumed it would come from at least one ofthese sources I mentioned. But I guess I'll have to wait until the final result to see if I'm right or wrong. Can't wait to hear what you're cooking for us!

You're talking about chapters within the 3+ hour doc Dangerous Days. Including new sources I have been given/found, The official releases, the bootlegs, and the DVDs, I have gone over every inch of sound multiple times, whether it be for use or simply reference. In the case of "Unicorn", as I've already said, only a few seconds of it here and there can be heard in the BR DVDs. The music used on the new DVDs are clipped, looped and manipulated, so while you may hear sections scattered throughout of pieces you haven't heard before, the manipulation of these samples prevents them from being referenced literally.

It should also be pointed out that the "horn" like sound comes from the same sample library used in the track "Taffy's".

Really? I failed to notice any similarities. The track you call "Taffy's" is the source cue with Demis Roussos's vocals, right?

No, it's Taffy's as in the music played in Taffy Lewis' bar. It comes on after Deckard hangs up the phone.

I see which one you're talking about.

Just for the record, there are two source cues used in Taffy Lewis's bar, one has vocals courtesy of Demis Roussos (heard when Deckard first enters the club), and the other does not (heard when Deckard is hung up on the phone).

I rather like the second one, wish we had a complete clean ending for it.

The second one was part of a mp3 file that has been available on occasion called Blade Runner Suite - Outtakes. It is 30 minutes of source material including the track in question, which is elsewhere called Salome's Dance, at 1:39. In the movie this track starts when the announcer introduces Salome (aka Zhora) and continues through until Zhora's dressing room (after Deckard goes backstage it is easy to miss among the other sounds). It probably is just looped to fit that length. The format of the track makes it easy to loop it endlessly.

No it's not a loop. In the film, the background beat continues, but if you listen carefully you can hear the "instruments" change slightly until the track ends with an applause. This is happening while Deckard is in Zhora's room.

I have been getting a lot of requests for putting up samples. Early on in this project I put up samples to give you an idea of the work I was doing. For those that got to download them and enjoy them I'm glad you did. But for those that haven't, something should be understood. It's not a reflection of the final product. The point is not to release one track at a time but everything at once when it is complete. Once that happens you'll be happy you waited. Meanwhile, if I have cause to release a further sample of something I will.

A preview of the front and back cover has been uploaded.

As you can see from the back cover and track list, the music is (currently) broken up into four sections. Tyrell Corporation, Bradbury Apartments, Animoid Row, and Eye World.

Thanks, focuspuller for all the updates.  I've really been enjoying the technically side regarding individual tracks, even if it does go a little over my head.  With all the work you've been putting in, I wouldn't think of burdening you with more, but some 'notes' with the final product, even if brief, would be a fascinating read.  I must say that your cover's looking VERY classy and would also complement the project in a tasteful way.  Many of the previous 'unofficial' releases...and even a lot of official CDs have too much clutter on the covers, which can draw the attention away from the main 'interest' within.  Oh my goodness.  I just can't wait.  But I shall enjoy waiting...thank you, once again.

Great to see the updates Focuspuller.  I really can't believe this is going to be 4 discs!  Quite a feat.  As I said before, I have no idea how you are doing all this, but best regards.   Oh, And I promise not to blurt on other threads again!  ;-)

If you need any more images.. I do have a PDF copy of a certain "sketchbook" too.

Have a better one!

Hey focuspuller,

Just wanted to point out that the version of "Unveiled Twinkling Space" presented on the BR Trilogy is NOT the version heard in the film (due to a 5% pitch difference), so in case you were using that cue for your Complete Collection, I just wanted to let you know that you will have to lower the pitch by 5% (unless you wanted it in PAL quality).

The music will be presented how it is supposed to be heard. NOT (in most cases) how it is heard in the film. That would contradict one of the basic objectives of this project.

Just to remind you (and in it is particularly evident with "Unveiled Twinkling Space" and how it appears on the soundtrack vs how it appears in the film) the sound editors on a movie frequently adjust the music and other sounds to match the final edit of a scene. What you hear in the movie is doubtfully how the original track sounded on the tapes that Vangelis delivered.

And also a reminder that the technology at that time was usually audio tape. To adjust the length of a track meant that you adjusted the speed and therefore the pitch. While it is true that digital audio was available (Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the first movie to be shot and edited with digital sound in 1979), it was still very expensive and high tech. Also, according to the codes on the Vangelis' albums from the 80's, he was using analog tape for his recordings at least through 1986 when he recorded Invisible Connections.

So when you consider how best to present Vangelis' music for Blade Runner, it is best to match the Soundtrack releases as they are at the speed he intended them to be when they were recorded. The change in pitch is just a cutting room edit like cutting the length or adding distortion to make the music sound like it is in the background.

Focuspuller is trying to give us a recreation of the original studio recordings which means reversing all the edits the sound editors made to the music. Not an easy thing for some of the music.

A question for you Focuspuller,

Just how are you sure that Unicorn is taken from Antactica? I have heard two other tracks in Blade Runner that have close sound to tracks in Antarctica and The Bounty, but they are not necessarily the same recordings. Both of which are certainly recorded for Blade Runner if they were used in the other movies. I have heard a bit from one bootleg (I have Antarctica on DVD, but I haven't watched it recently) that does sound like the Unicorn music, but considering the editing history of Blade Runner and how it was finished (not by Scott but by the studio), how do we know that the Unicorn track was not part of the the final batch of music Vangelis delivered for the movie and that he didn't just reuse the sounds in Antarctica? I mean, one of the tracks delivered between the Work Print and the Theatrical Release was the Deckard & Roy Duel/Wounded Animals which includes the Antarctica theme as Roy says goodbye to Pris. And in the behind the senes information on the DVD release they definitively say that the Unicorn scene was shot as part of the original production so it could have been scored before it was axed. I'm just wondering, other than musical similarity, what you base using the music as heard in Antarctica as part of the Blade Runner soundtrack?
