JasonN's PT FanEdits (Attack of the Federation, Twilight of the Republic, & The Black Knight Rises) (Released) ** Revised V3 Cuts In The Works

Original Info:

Lately, I’ve been reading the e-book version of The Secret History of Star Wars (http://www.secrethistoryofstarwars.com)

and thinking a lot about the Prequel trilogy and what they ultimately mean towards the original SW films. In going over these thoughts, I’ve realized something important about my previous attempt at a SW Prequel fanedit, Shadows of the Old Republic:

I’m not really as satisfied with it as I thought.

Don’t get me wrong, I do like some of the work that I did on that edit. However, as a narrative work that details the events prior to Star Wars, I think that that story does work better as a series of films… abit, ones that could be greatly improved over it’s original “Lucas” forms. Therefore, I’ve decided to go ahead and create my own versions of The Phantom MenaceAttack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith

It sounds interesting.  I can't say much more othere than that at the moment, as I haven't seen it yet (my internet is acting up and I can't view youtube atm).

Those that have seen my previous "Shadows of the Old Republic" edit will probably remember this edit - Obi-wan's space battle with Jango's Slave-1 (still one of my favorite edits that I've done):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBwyUh0UD94

Now this scene was not part of my "Shadows" edit (since it didn't really work within the context of that edit's story), but this is when Anakin is denied the rank of Master on the Jedi council and is tasked by Obi-wan to find out the truth behind Palpatine - I've edited it to further develop the Jedis' suspicions of Palpatine (also added the deleted scene "A Plot to Destroy the Jedi?" back into the film, although I'll probably change the scene transition to something better), ro increase Anakin's anger toward the Council, and to remove any mention of the "Chosen One" prophecy:

that rotoscoping is really good. how do you do that? there is a video on youtube in which someone has rotoscoped anakin with a red saber. looks amazng, but its only available in low-res youtube quality, so i'm considering doing my own if i do an edit of ROTS.

And here's the finished "Obi-wan/Anakin VS Count Duku, round 2" from EP3, where I've completely rotoscoped Duku's lightsaber from "Sith"-red to purple (since he's still a Jedi and is not a Sith in these edits):

I would have preferred green but whateva

ben_danger: The method I used for the clip shown was to go in frame by frame and paint the lightsaber a different tint by hand. The program I used was Bauhaus Mirage (the predecessor to TVPaint), which is kinda like a mix between Photoshop and After Effects. Granted, it's not the fastest method, but it gives me the best and most accurate results (using vector masks in Vegas was a lot quicker, but the final image isn't as good-looking in my opinion).

Octorox: I thought about making it green, but for the Twilight of the Republic (AofC) edit, I kinda wanted Dooku's lightsaber to be a different color than either Anakin's or Obi-wan's. Because of that, I carried over the same purple lightsaber over to the The Black Knight Rises (RotS) edit to maintain series continuity.

How about this?:

Its more menacing and its cool to have a sith (apart from Mr Vader)

Eh... no, I'm perfectly fine with Sidious and Vader being the only Sith in the plot.
(I'm mean, they're suppose to be like a secret society, right? Wouldn't be much of a secret if every enemy turned out to be a Sith, I think...)

So after much debating, I've decided to make my version of TPM (which is called "Attack of the Federation") a part of these edits continuity. This edit is my attempt to take the best aspects of the various TPM fanedits out there (Phantom Editor, Slumberland, ADigitalMan, Magnoliafan, ect) and combine them into one great version:

EDIT: Added the cutlist to the first post of the thread.

And this is a quick editing test that I just rendered out to get opinions on, but this is Dooku's escape from Twilight of the Republic (AotC) WITHOUT FIGHTING YODA:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xvpf3uaMeA

I havn't rotoscoped Dooku's lightsaber nor have I composited Yoda out of the final shot, but I having trouble deciding whether or not I should at least include Yoda's force duel with Dooku or if the sequence works better without Yoda in the scene at all, so I wanted to hear what others think of it.

I like the idea of painting Sidious' face completely black,
this way he really looks like a phantom, as the original title of the movie proposes.

So I prefer the "Mysterious Identity of Sidious" test edits to the "updated Sidious scene".

But  Sidious' neck sould be painted black, too!

I still have some further refining to do on Sidious's "shadow face" - I've been busy most of yesterday and today editing the Pod Race and beginning of the Naboo Battle.

Good work!

Edi are you going to rerotoscope the part when the blue color of anakin's saber is washed up?

I like this idea of meeting Anakin at the fight.  Flows much better, and forshadows a dark side.  However, as it stands, it's a rough cut from JarJar to the fight.  Maybe a fade-in of the sound effects from the kids "cheering" it in might fix that, or at least show Jar-Jar letting go of the fish

However, with the Sidious face being less visible - unfortunately, at this moment, it just seems like a cheap blur . I hope I don't sound harsh, but if you want that you'll need to make it a bit more realistic.  I can actually still see his mouth moving under the blur.

The "Sidious" composites tests are an older version - here's an updated version of the scene:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFmUhvT_A9g

(and yes, I'm aware that his face is still visible in the reflection on the table - it has since been removed from the final composite)

I'm thinking that we should see Sidious's "sith eyes" there in the darkness.

Eh, no - the whole point is of those edits to keep Sidious's identity (and face ) a secret until the third and last film of the trilogy (The Black Knight Rises).

Shoud not call episode 2 to Dawn of the Clone wars instead?

I don't think he was referring to a feature that would identify or allude to it being Palpatine, but rather just wanting to see some evil looking eyes (akin to some sith) peering through.  Either way, I dont think it makes a difference, though from your test shots, the last was the most realistic/believable, and this had no eyes at all.  So I say leave them out.

It reminds me of the ESB comic book version of the Emperor's hologram.

There he looked like a black shadow of a monk (really spooky), I wonder if any has any scans?

precisely. We never even see Palpatine with the sith eyes anyway. I just mean some glowing jawa style sith eyes under the hood.

No, I'm fully aware that he meant Sidious's "Sith" eyes and not Palpatine's: I experimented with having "Sith eyes" in the black cowl a long time ago and, to be perfectly honest, it looked pretty damn stupid with just the eyes and no face (and I don't ever want to associate the look of the Jawas with a dark lord of the Sith like Sidious).

I'm very happy with how the cowl/hood currently looks (with the inside just descending into blackness) and have no plans to change it further.
