I've never had a problem with the any aspect of the space slug. I like everything about. It's not like caves need stalagmites to look like a cave.

Silly quibble, but since stalagmites and tites are formed by water dripping, an asterioid with no liquid water or gravity wouldn't have any.

I always liked the space slug. I don't think it needs any tweaking.

"There's an awful lot of moisture in here."

Besides as I said earlier Star Wars isn't science fiction, it's space fantasy so the creatures don't have to make scientific sense but have to make narrative sense.

The mouth doesn't have to function as a real mouth but it should resemble both a mouth and a cave entrance (Han is an experienced pilot he wouldn't have flown into the thing if he thought it looked like a space alien on the way in, Leia isn't an experienced pilot but she isn't an idiot and she still thinks it's a cave on the way out).

When you think cave you think stalagmites (well at least most people do, if you don't believe me google "cave" and see what images you'll get) so why not have the teeth look more like stalagmites?

But it's Adywan's call.

Well I can see some of us think changing the slug might work and some like it as is. Nothing wrong with that.

These are just ideas being kicked around. Many of the great new bits from AnH-R originally began as far fetched ideas way back when, so you never know.

One reason I might like to see the slug altered a bit is that a new mouth (or something like we see in the mock-up) looks a bit more like a cave opening. Another is that it's way more disturbing looking and less puppet-like. As I mentioned earlier the inside PoV when they are escaping (as we've also seen in rough mock-ups) could be great as well.

"But it's Adywan's call."

^^ Exactly -  Ady will either consider it or decide to leave it as is.

I'm good with that either way.

I think it might look a little less puppety by leaving it as is, but maybe slowing it down a tad more and maybe showing some dust/debris/whatever flying out around its mouth as it slams shut. The scene has never bothered me, but I know Ady will do something to it in the usual subtle, logical way. :)

If anything I think the most that can be/should be done is to desaturate or adjust the hue of the creature's gums to be less pink. But overall I like the creature just as it is.

Not to mention, Han et al can walk around freely, so there's certainly gravity as well. :)

I don't mind the slug as is, however, I always balked at "the cave's collapsing" line since it looks so obviously like teeth.  If the slug just waits for something to land in it to eat, I think the entrance would appear more cave-like than like rows of teeth.  That being said, perhaps the teeth are hidden within the wall until the slug senses the Falcon's attempt at escape and then starts to close to trap it inside.  But what're you gonna do?

Wow, ANHR has the great flipper debate and so far ESBR has had the great green laser debate, the great blue/grey TIE fighter debate, the great expand the carbon freeze chamber debate, the great change the slug debate, and the great get rid of that damn snowflake on Chewy's foot debate!  And we're still quite a way off from its release!

And let's not forget the "farting" asteroid debate, red AT-AT window debate, Needa shuttle debate, Executor tractor beam (ugh) debate, crashing Star Destroyer debate...

I think we may be all debated out. >:)

Or to quote the Penguin: "I think the words you're looking for.. are.. AHHHHHH!!!!!"

BTW, what was the great flipper debate?  And the snowflake on Chewie's foot?

Yes, I think that the speed of the action is a major part of the puppet feeling. Like the old movies with little boat models on big waves. Here we "see" the human hand behind the slug.

Prior to adding new teeth this scene needs indeed a treatment to make it looks more real in scale.

Actually make that the Great Great 'Get rid of that damn snowflake on Chewie's foot' debate...! Don't forget there was also the minor 'Yoda's ears twitch too much' debate and the very minor 'Should Lando die' debate (not that it was a debate but it was discussed!)

Great Flipper Debate: Originally, Ady had replaced the hairy arm on the floor of the cantina with a model based on Ponda Baba's hand, since his was the arm that got cut off according to the EU and other sources.  This cause a huge stir as people who had no problem with a hairy arm on the floor were suddenly up in arms (no pun intended) because it didn't even register to them that Ponda Baba had suction cup hands which then brought up the question of "how does he hold a gun?"  So Ady made it so its actually the Doctor's arm that gets cut off (a cameo by his own hand!).

Snowflake on Chewie's Foot: A long running joke started by HotRod back during ANHR about Ady doing such good work, but ignoring the sand on Chewie's foot.  When the conversation was moved to ESBR, he started complaining about the snowflake.  I'm sure in a few years, it will be the twig...

Monroville, you really should take the time to read through (or at least skim through, skipping boring bits) the whole ANH:R thread. Lots of fascinating things there. :) You may not even know about some of the ridiculous things that happened to Adywan in his making that edit.

You mean losing everything and having to start over again multiple times?  How close we were to never having it at all!

Just my two cents, but I do agree that the slug could benefit from some work done to it. I always thought Leia's line was cheesy because it was obviously not a cave collapsing. I like the mock ups that are being made here as a demonstration, I think the teeth should definately look closer to the stalagmites in a real cave. The outside mockup by vaderios is very scary, and I love the look of it. I also think that speed is a factor, it should certainly move with a slower motion, and maybe some dust flying around when it comes out to snap at the Falcon. Bingowings, great job with the teeth.

so...how about more grounds troops in Hoth? The battle ought to be more like Geonosis or Kashykk with the opposing sides just pounding each other with a ridiculous amount of laser fire. I honestly see nothing wrong with the space slug.

New clip, new clip, new clip! Give us something interesting to discuss Ady! The slug is fine.....that cave teeth thing is a mess.

The 'Space Slug' has always been one of my favourite creature designs in the whole saga, and it's interesting that there seems to be roughly an equal split here between those who would like to see the 'teeth' altered quite a bit, and those who wouldn't.  I wonder which direction Adywan will choose eventually?

Here's a good shot of that actual 'puppet' model from the front this time -  http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2120/2378370309_8ca035b6a3.jpg?v=0  (note that the 'tongue' of the 'puppet' itself is not really shown in the shots from 'inside' the creature, i.e.- during the very top 2 shots)

Those have been some interestingly 'gnarly' teeth mock-ups recently, but personally I still prefer them basically as they currently are....although I always thought that the exact way they were shaped (with a gap between the bigger front two) in the original Ralph McQuarrie artwork looked even better:

Close-up of teeth -  http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/2/2f/MCQ-spaceslug.jpg

Whole shot of artwork -  http://www.zazzle.com/mcquarrie_art_space_slug_star_wars_poster_prin_print-228555353050355950

Here's another neat piece of artwork that I really like, that might have looked great if it had been realised as a brief, distant, drifting element in the background of one of the 'asteroids' shots -  http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:SpaceSlug.JPG

Although that artwork above shows a 'shortish' Slug, I'm personally not stuck on any speculative exact 'lengths' for the Space Slugs in general, as I reckon they'd be able to 'extend' their body 'lengths' at will, like a worm does, and it could depend on whether they are full-grown adults or not.  But here's an interesting 'info.' page, just for completion's sake -  http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Exogorth

(I'd still like to see the odd drifting asteroid or 2 in the distance of these 'mouth' shots, by the way)

Oh, and by the way vaderios, YES, your 'greyer' Falcon cockpit on the previous page looked a lot better than the current strange SE colouring in the sequence!  Nice.  :)
