My Cowclops v2 transfers, which I used to play ALL THE TIME, haven't been watched in months. Somehow, knowing that it isn't as accurate (in terms of color, etc) as the GOUT makes me actually consider laying down good money for that most recent boxset, but then I remember a) I don't have money to blow right now and b) the blu-ray, which will hit with some version of the movie on it sometime in the next few years, could very well include the original version in 1080p.

The blu-ray could hit in a few years, but look how long it took it to hit DVD. It could contain a 1080p version of the original versions, but given George's track record and how stubborn he is, it very well may not include anymore than a barebones transfer of each film. Regardless what it contains, people will eat them up, love every second of it, and defend George to the death for having made them the way he did. Since that is the case, why should he go through any kind of trouble going out of his way to put more on them than needs be?

Not trying to stomp on your hope, just putting it out there. The fact is you don't have to spend good money on the newest boxset to get the GOUT, in fact I think that would be a mistake, as long as they can rerelease these every year and still have people buy them, there is no reason for them every to come out with anything new. I got my GOUT late last year used for $9, all three movies. The market is flooded with these stupid things! Just check ebay, half, amazon, or any of the other online places that carry used discs, and you should be able to snag all three for less than $20. Even better is if you find a place like Game Exchange that carries used DVDs, I noticed they often have them on sale two for ten bucks. If you happen to stumble across the GOUT there you can get them and one other movie for $20.

When you buy the GOUT, you essentially have two sets of movies on your hands, the originals, and the '04 movies. If you want to minimize your cost as much as possible, you can take the '04 discs, find a few empty DVD cases, print off '04 covers for them, and sell them on ebay (just specify in your listing that the original cases are missing and that replacements have been printed off so the buyer doesn't get disappointed when they see they were printed and not original). Not sure how much you'd get for them, but even if you only get five bucks or so, it'll still take a chunk out of your cost, and some other SE SW fan will be happy to get a cheap set of the movies they love. This was what I intended to do, but since I got lucky and only payed $9 for the things, I didn't bother.
