Just wondering if any Brits managed to catch the Monkey Journey To The West show (the Damon Albard/Jamie Hewlett thing)?

hi satanika, congratulations on your restoration of the monkey king! sounds like really nice work indeed. as a child i used to dream about how the monkey king fought his enemies. those glorious mementos. the combination of the old story, the drawings, the fantastisc soundeffekts, and the pleasent danish narrator was absolutely brilliant. only i haven't had the opportunity to watch it for a very long time. but perhaps you could tell me, where i could purchase a copy of your genius work? kind regards, bo

I downloaded it though I haven't been able to watch the whole thing yet. Liked what I saw though. Very good animation.

I have a question. Does anyone know if the film was ever given an official US release at some point? I'm from the US and never heard of this film before Santanika's restoration.

Hi Satanika

I just want to thank you for the amazing and impressive work with making accessible this restored version of "Uproar in Heaven". It is my impression that most of my generation of danes have been waiting to see it again. Like many others I have been searching for it for years. I also visited Cinemateket and saw it - You are a hero.

Only one question is pressing though- are you following up on this grand and noble project ? What i mean is of course - can we expect more digitalized versions of the following chapters of "the journey to the West" from your hand ?

Possibly.
These are the episodes I know of from Shanghai Animation Film Studio:
1941  Tie Shan Gong Zhu (Princess Iron Fan)
1958  Zhu Bajie eats a watermelon (cutout animation)
1964  Da Nao Tian Gong (Uproar in Heaven / The Monkey King)
1981  Sun Wu Kong Tou Chi Ren Shen Guo (Ginseng Fruit)
1985  Jin Hou Xiang Yao (The Monkey King Conquers the Bone Demon)
198?  Sun Wu Kong Da Zhan Huo Yan Shan
198?  Sun Wu Kong Yu San Jian Bao
198?  Sun Wu Kong Qi Yu Xiao Ding Ding

The problem is that besides some of the episodes being very difficult to obtain, most have no subtitles of any kind. And unfortunately I don't know anyone who could translate them... I think there are 4 ~40mins eps with only Mandarin audio and no subs. So for those to happen I would definitely need a translator...

I still plan to do (at least) Ginseng Fruit and the alternate versions I have of The Monkey King Conquers the Bone Demon, not sure when I will get around to it though.

Also there's this:
1979 Ne Zha Nao Hai / Nezha Conquers the Dragon King / Little Nezha Fights Great Dragon Kings (BBC title)

Not the Monkey King, but it's very nice. The Chinese dvd is actually very good, but it's only the fullscreen version. I have a copy of the theatrical/widescreen version (not super great quality, but still) and hope to do that as well at some point, and also include the BBC dub.

It would be so awesome if you make more. If I can be of assistance let me know. I know a couple of guys who study chinese, and who might be up for the task.

I finally managed to get the English narration. :)
So it will be included also. Thanks to Brumme for the lead, which ultimately worked out.

Very glad to have helped, even if it was only a small part of the project: finally had a chance to watch the DVD you sent today with my niece (who sat enthralled, naturally), and wasn't expecting just how incredibly professional you've made it! Really cool to finally know what they were saying, thanks to the subtitles.

You did an awesome job!

Glad you liked it! :)
And thanks again for sharing your recording, it makes this preservation that little bit more complete.

On another note, hopefully (knock on wood, fingers crossed etc.) HOPEFULLY we have a couple of translators on board.
So with a bit of luck the entire series may be done.

Hope I didn't just jinx it! ;)

Wow, all these guys love Journey to the West and Monkey King so much! I checked and found information from internet which is about the episodes you mentioned.

1958  Sun Wu Kong Da Zhan Huo Yan Shan (the correct name of this film should be: Huo Yan Shan-the Flaming Mountain, tell the story of Monkey King conquers the Flaming Mountain which is based on Journey to the West ,actually it is a puppet show)

1989  Sun Wu Kong Yu San Jian Bao Bei (Monkey King and 3 magic weapons--a story based on Journey to the West)

1980  Sun Wu Kong Qi Yu Xiao Ding Ding (the correct name of this film should be: Ding Ding Zhan Hou Wang---Ding Ding(a boy's name) compete against Monkey King---based on a science fiction named "jonior Sun and Senior Sun"--because Ding Ding's surname is Sun, so it is same as Monkey King's surname.

Sorry, my English is not good enough to be a translator!

Hi slideyfoot and satanika

I'm glad that satanika finally got a hold on you slideyfoot, I tried myself, but without much luck - that's the bad thing about not having a facebook profile :)

But cool it all worked out in the end and I'm so glad I got a hold on this great dvd.

This actually inspired me in a creative way, since I was planning to paint something on the wall for my newborn twins, I decided to paint a portrait of the monkey king in a tree, smiling while holding a peach on top of his head and it turned out quite well (in my opinion), so now the kids have the monkey king watcing over them, on the wall (that's gotta be more insuring, than some guardian angel)  :)

I also bought a chineese "manga" from which I'd might paint some monkey children smiling, about to having a meal...  I just thought it would be nice to look at for the kids.

So again thanks satanika for the inspiration, I'm so looking forward to any future projects from you.

Hi satanika and everyone,

I'm a native Chinese speaker, can read/write in Chinese too of course.

I think I might be able to help translating. I speak English ok. While you can't expect my translation to be pretty, it should at least be literally correct. Someone else can always polish it.

Let me know if you're interested.

Btw 1, those who interested in this movie should also check out "Nezha Nao Hai"(1979) aka "Nezha Conquers The Dragon King". It's my favourite.

Gotta go to bed for now.

Love that film, so was most annoyed when my mother taped over it years ago with some DIY program. IIRC, that is available in English: seem to remember satanika sending me the link a while ago, but would be interested if anyone has recommendations for especially good versions (with English subs) and decent suppliers?

My gal first introduced me to this animated feature a few months ago, and I absolutely fell in love with it.  I've been a big fan of Sun Wukong for a long time (just an outrageous, playful character), but it was disappointing when I couldn't find a decent DVD available.  A bit of searching, and I found this thread!  I've obtained the restoration, and I've been watching it on my computer non-stop since!

A giant thanks to all the folks who put in the hard work to make this happen, especially Satanika!

Quick question: I've been trying to make a DVD of this fantastic restoration, and while the audio and video is working fine, I'm having an issue with the subtitles.  Does anyone have .srt files for subs for this version?  I'm trying to use Avi2dvd to make the DVD, and apparently .sub and .idx files don't play well with that program.

A bit of news...

Da Nao Tian Gong/Uproar In Heaven:
I recently learned that there is a French DVD of Da Nao Tian Gong (Le Roi Des Singes). I just received a copy today. It appears to be an almost-complete transfer of the French theatrical version. Almost, because although no major chunks appear to be missing like in the 40th ed., little chunks (like a half a second to a second) seems to be missing in many places.

It looks to be the best transfer of the theatrical version so far though, somewhat better than the Chinese bootleg source, but due to the chunks of frames missing it is still incomplete, and not a true representation of the theatrical version (and the DVD is French only)... sigh... This movie seem to be cursed or something.

I think this French DVD was released in the last quarter of 2008. It's really too bad I didn't have this version or even knew about it back when I was working on the restoration. :( I guess no French Monkey King fans visits the forum..

So it would be nice to do a v2 with the new material, but to be honest I'm not really itching to do much of that work again. In all likelyhood I'll get around to it but I can't really say when. Also the frames missing could make it even more time-consuming, since this is/was a frame-accurate restoration, as far as that is even possible.

**********

Also...
I have been gathering materials for the Nezha cartoon, and I have lots of rare stuff for that. If someone has a nice setup for capping PAL and/or SECAM VHS, and wish to help out, feel free to contact me.

I was in contact with a couple of translators a while ago (which are needed for the remaining episodes), but they've all backed out for one reason or another. Hey, that's what happens... But help is still needed, particularly someone who can translate spoken Mandarin into English, and create the subs. An English proofreader might be useful down the line as well since English is not my native language.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, and might help move things along a bit.

**********

And also...
I have secured copies of the Monkey King SAFS releases I didn't have before.
In addition to
1941  Tie Shan Gong Zhu (Princess Iron Fan)
1981  Sun Wu Kong Tou Chi Ren Shen Guo (Ginseng Fruit)
1985  Jin Hou Xiang Yao (The Monkey King Conquers the Bone Demon)
they are:

1958  Zhu Bajie eats a watermelon (cut-out animation; slightly better copy)
1958  Huo Yan Shan (puppet movie)
1980  Ding Ding Zhan Hou Wang (cut-out animation)
1989  Sun Wu Kong Yu San Jian Bao Bei (I don't think this is from SAFS?)

Screenies (prelim. filtering):

1958  Zhu Bajie eats a watermelon
Notes: I know for a fact that this was aired on Danish TV, and likely in other European countries, in what appears to be superior quality to what I've been able to dig up. So a better VHS recording might be out there somewhere.

1958  Huo Yan Shan (puppet movie)

1980  Ding Ding Zhan Hou Wang (cut-out animation)

1989  Sun Wu Kong Yu San Jian Bao Bei
Notes: Not a SAFS production?? Any info on this cartoon is appreciated.

That's all for now, I'll post again when there's something substantial happening. It might be a while, but Nezha and Ginseng Fruit SHOULD happen...

Whoa!!! I didn't read the previous posts, but right now I'm too worked up to read anything, so let me just say THANK YOU out of context. Did a routine search on "Uproar in Heaven" this morning and found a hit. Guess it must have been a few years since my last attempt; but there it was, the real deal. I've already transformed it into a MKV with Danish speak only and behold: Abekongen lives!!! Just like I always imagined it! This has been my own pet project fantasy for years. I bought the 40 Anniversary release and a English-subbed DVD from the States which must have been a pirate project of some kind. I also found a torrent of a Danish VHS rip. My plan was to merge these releases into the original strong taste televised version. To get the best picture quality, I would have settled for the shortened version, but I understand that this is the full length metaphysical kick-ass release. That is so awesome! And what's even better: I know that I am not alone. The Monkey King is something special, something important. That's why he used to be my favourite character. But now it's you :)

Well, I don't know, it was indescribably frustrating to learn of that dvd a year later, when all the work was done... And it had been out there the whole time. Very unlucky that some French person didn't do a quick search and told me about it.. Oh well...

In any case.. While I still don't know when I will do a v2, or work on the other episodes (need Mandarin->English translators/subbers and English proofreaders/syncers. PM me if interested.), I'm mainly posting to direct any infrequent visitors to the new Nezha preservation project here - http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Nezha-Conquers-the-Dragon-King-1979-BBC-166-1-Theatrical-235-1-preservations/topic/11977/
