I tried several tools to capture video that embedded in a flash video and then convert it into a useable format (IE avi or mpg) with no success.

Has anyone done this successfully and what do you use?

well if you want to capture it, I found the best screen capture I have tried so far is Camtasia.  But, there are also a lot of web browser plugins to get the source video.  Videodownload helper has been my favorite so far.  but indeed there are some tricky videos that I have only been able to get with a screen capture.

Capturing flash: Replay Media Catcher.  Hands down the best.  They have a war going with Adobe.  Whenever they think they've blocked flash rippers, Replay quickly turns out an update.

As far as converting, I'm a do it yourself kind of guy.  FLV Extract, Avisynth and lots of assumefps and convertfps sort of things.

If you don't want to spend a lot of time on each clip, you can try Riva FLV Encoder http://www.rivavx.com/index.php?encoder&L=3 or the very popular Total Video Converter: http://www.effectmatrix.com/total-video-converter/

I'm using Camtasia atm, it works pretty well but god it makes huge files. at first I didnt have any sound but I figured that out eventually. Then the sound sounded like poo but I got that fixed. Now I just need to squeeze out a little more quality from the video and Ill be happy.

 Tried Replay Media Catcher...had issues.

Thanks for the help everyone

RMC is usually a solid choice.  Isn't Camtasia just a screen recorder not a stream ripper?

Btw, I just noticed tonight that RMC has a format converter built in.  I've never tried it so I can't tell you how good it is.

Also, you may have more luck if you reinstall the previous (v9) of flash player.

Edit: I take it back.  That's no longer an issue.  v10 works fine.  Still it depends on the source you're ripping from.

RealPlayer has an option on install that will put tabs on all Flash videos that says "Download video" that will save the clip to your hard drive as an FLV file.  From there, it's just a matter of conversion.
