Smart idea or not, I don't really care. I am absolutely thrilled there are people like you (rcb) who throughly enjoy the SE and think it was an amazing feat of intelligence for him to have added those things to the films. Seriously, this is great, I really couldn't be more pleased with that aspect of the issue. I have loved these movies my whole life, and am thrilled to see other love them, even if in some altered form. Even the prequels don't bother me so much. I a pretty much hate the later two as much as I could possibly hate any film. To me they are just unbelievably horrible films and I cannot stand to watch them, but I think it is great so many SW fans, old and new, accept them inspite of all their flaws (some to such a degree they seem to think they are flawless). I do not begrudge other fans for liking these aspects of SW, I am very happy they find the great enjoyment in these things that I have found in the SW I grew up with.
What turns the whole thing sour to me is the treatment of the originals. Bottom line. The end. It leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth, and irks me to no end. Defend Lucus on his vast intelligence for having created a beautiful CG Jabba, Jar Jar Binks as well as a brilliant and shocking turn to the darkside for Anakin, but I really cannot stand it when Lucas fans defend his treatment of the originals.
Star Wars is in a sad state. Not so much to me because it has nuked the fridge (ironic that very term come to us from another work of the flannel man himself), I'd argue that all good things will do that sooner or later and that it would be ashame to let newer, lesser quality materials ruin the experience of the parts that were good. With something as popular as Star Wars always has been, it is to be expected that it will eventually collapse in on itself. To me the sign of SW's sorry state is the fact that the very films that made it popular in the first place are not recieving the treatment they deserve, and that some fans are so in love with everything Georgie does, they actually defend him in this.
