Too bad the extended tv cut of Superman only exists as a 16mm pan and scan flat print.

I once saw the abc cut up on ebay it went for hundreds of dollars and the print was fairly faded.

I did not bid on the print since it was pan and scan and i would have had no way to get it transfered since it is a copywritten motion picture film.

The guy who bought it if he has a projector must be pretty pleased with his find.

Still even a faded 16mm dupe tv station print is better than a vhs tape recording of 1980s vintage.

That was probably Chance Bartels. He has a print which he transfered to DVD. This was to be one of my sources until Jim Bowers donated his- Which is exactly the same.

I myself am still looking for a recording of the supergirl broadcast with those scenes found in no other version of the film.

Years ago i bought my Sister the limited anchor bay 2 disc release.  Which had the international version and directors cut.  Though i would have liked to have given her the tv cut and the theatrical us version as well they are not on dvd.

The first tv airing (on ABC) of Supergirl was a 97 min trimmed version of the 138 min Director's Cut released on the double DVD set from Anchor Bay. It is out of print and starting to go way up in price. Every other tv airing since then has been the International 124 min Version.

The only version of SG not available on DVD is the 106 min US theatrical release which contains a side shot of SG flying as she's about to fly out of the Phantom Zone into Selena's fortress not seen in any other cut.

I don't know why they refused to restore the theatrical sound mix as it was released in six track mag and would have been awesome on dvd.  Even the stereo dolby mix could have benefitted from going back to the master tapes.  It is really a shame the best sound presentation for Superman the Movie was in 1978.  The best it ever sounded on home video was on the Uncompressed PCM theatrical track on Japan Laserdisc.  Which is nearly impossible to find now.

Unless of course you could get your hands on theatrical 35mm film prints and get someone to transfer the audio, lol.  If i remember correctly Donner said the original mix elements were in too poor shape to be reused on the newly created mix.  He obviously meant the original seperate discrete elements and not the master tape derived from them.  Yeah that would have meant a generation loss but better than not having the audio mix people loved in 1978.

Even the super8mm digest version need to be preserved on dvd.  I wonder what scenes are featured in the cutdowns?

I wish i was rich and could somehow Get a hold of a three strip dye technicolor print of Superman with the Six track mag, that and star wars, lol.

The original theatrical sound is available in the 4 film favorites set (see link above) as well as the Ultimate Collection box set and the 4 disc STM set. It is available only in the theatrical cut and not on the expanded 152 min Thau version.

Yeah i have the ultimate set and an unfixed version so i don't have the 2.0 original mix on Superman the movie only a 2.0 of mixdown of the new 5.1 and of course the 5.1,lol.

The guy i bought the set from on ebay never told me it was the non fixed boxedset.

I never did the disc send away thingy because i found it a hassle and am too lazy or wahtever.  Unaway i read somewhere cannot remember exactly where online that the 2.0 stereo theatrical on the dvd was improperly mixed or something like the audio pans are out of wack on the surround steering or something.

The dude who wrote that dvd review suggested getting the laserdisc and ripping the PCM audio and syncing it to the movie.   I would of course have to settle for the us release on laserdisc since i cannot find the japan release.

I kept my un-fixed version too. I just went and ordered a used copy of the Superman 3 Deluxe Edition from Amazon a few months later for like $4.

Hey Fanfiltration

Your lucky that you kept UC unfixed version as it will be a collectors item someday.

Too bad Mitch does not have access to one.

We have an older version of the Bowers footage, it's not the cleaner version that Alex has.

They seem to have a stutter problem that can't be completely fixed.  So we will only be using it for just a couple of shots, if all our main sources has fade-outs or logos.

Our main source for the KCOP material is a real gem.  It has great color, virtually no noise, and runs smooth as silk.  It's the frame-by-frame cleaning of dirt, scratches, and spots from the various sources that's the most time-consuming part.

Mitch promised pictures, but I thought it'd be nice to show some work-in-progress footage.

Below is some of our destruction footage (ignore the timecode):

Tomorrow I'll upload some snippets of other scenes in one file.

Enjoy!

Looking good. I can't wait to see this cut because by the time I'm done w/ mine it'll be the last thing I want to watch after having stared at it endlessly and, I'm sure, cringing at what I could have done differently. LOL

Good lord, do we know how you feel!

Oh, I'm sure. You work on it and make progress then find a better way to do it down the line a ways and go back to a previous scenes to re-do what you did days ago the better way... it's unending. When do you let it go? I see now why they say films are made in the editing room.

LOL Exactly!  Then you have to go back to the scenes that were perfectly fine, and alter them to match what you improved.  Ugh!

Watching the same shots over and over again can mess with your head.  This is one of my all-time favorite movies, but right now if I visit someone and see a chandalier in their house, I'm going to throw rocks at it.
