When I was a kid, I had the Special Edition Trilogy VHS box set, with the little commentary thing at the beginning of each movie, and as such, the biggest error I remember about Empire was the transparant Snowspeeder cockpits, because they showed a bunch of comparison shots of that gaffe during the commentary.

yeh, i still have those box sets. I remember thinking how great it was that the cockpits are no longer transparent. it wasn't until i started Revisited that i realised that what they said was totally and utter lies. All they did was slightly change the black level and didn't re-composite the shots at all.  I decided to re watch that clip where they showed the difference before and after because i thought that the 2004 DVD's may have mistakenly used the unfixed footage. but i couldn't believe that , even though they show a before and after comparison and say how they fixed it, that the 2 shots were exactly the same but with different black levels.

Actually, if you look at these comparisons closely, the cockpit is more transparent in the SE version than it is in the Original. You can clearly see the outline of the AT-AT through the cockpit, especially its neck and foot, strut in the SE but you can't so much in the GOUT

i really wish i could get hold of the original elements so i could re-composite them properly but that's never going to happen, sadly.

It looks like most of what they did was sharpen the image and take away the grain...then applied the blue wash over the film afterward when they realised the fixes hadn't worked and hope it hid everything!

The energy beams are easier to spot than the AT-AT.

Ady, are there any plans to fix Yoda's lazy eye?

personally I would just be happy to get rid of the lasers from the inside of the cockpit

That is freakishly awesome, Ady. What did you do to the asteroids to make them look so good?

the whole background asteroid field i had to rebuild from scratch. The original was just a doubled matte and looked blurred. then there is about 30+ different layers of asteroids added on top to fill the background and give it more depth. The on top of that there are all the single larger asteroids added. The each layer has to have a separate motion path given to match the main motion of the shot. all in all the cockpit shot alone had almost 100 different layers to create it. Even my quad core struggled to render all that so i am so glad i dropped the 1080p idea because i now know it would have been impossible.

The whole asteroid sequence is having a makeover so be prepared. lol

Remember when this was just going to be a color correction / de-SEification?  LOL

The new clip looks amazing.  I read your explanation of all the layers before I went to bed, but I still gasped when I saw it for the first time this morning.

B'oh! Yes, sorry about that. See, I already downloaded that, then placed it in a folder on my desktop called 'ESB Re extras.' What I watched was an older video called 'asteroid_chase_comparison' rather than the proper one. :p I'm going to watch it now.

That's why I added timestamps to the front of all of my videos.  Also helps so I can see the progress that has been made.  Here is my listing, for those curious:

Are you going to have to isolate the cockpit itself (like with a still frame) to stop the transparency? Of course, there are shadows, so if the cockpit is a still frame the shadows and light would always stay the same, but there must be a way.

The good thing is that one could always use a "cloning" tool ala Adobe Photoshop, since the affected areas are the flat black and grey areas of the cockpit, as opposed to a more detailed full model or the like.  The main thing would be to paint out the laserbolts.  I probably wouldn't notice the AT-AT if the cockpit was darker like the SE shot.

There was one shot when I was going to through the film for ImperialFighter just before Wedge fires his tow cable where you can see the side of the walker THROUGH Luke and his cockpit while Luke is talking!  That will take some skill to get rid of.

When they talk about the Special Editions, they always talk about how they "digitally recomposited" all of the effects shots.  If they did, why are there still matte lines, garbages boxes, and transparent cockpits?  Give Adywan access to those oringal composites for a WEEK and there wouldn't be any of that crap.

Ridiculous.

Okay, here is a good example of what I'm talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coypgsWo4Rg&feature=related
on 2:55. his fingers do a wobble when he is pointing up during his speech.  Granted, this doesn't happen a lot, so it will take some sharp eyes to look for.  Now I know he's 800 years old and all, but unless Yoda is supposed to be senile or something, I do not think this was intentional.

And no, I'm not going to bring up the < ears > again.

Just saw watched both versions of the yoda tweak.  Incredible work ady!  I think the second version is best

I do have a little request on the hoth battle. Could you give the smaller guns on the side of the head of the AT-AT's a little action. They never fire the whole time if I recall.

Just to say at this point, I now know that they definately do have several scenes where they are utilised throughout the battle for sure....and they aren't green either!  More on them soon.  :)

Adywan, I think this may be that post of AuggieBenDoggie's which was on page 196 of this thread, that you may have missed.  I know you can't respond to everyone, all the time, so I did at the time.  I hope you'll agree with him that there is some great scope for extra laserbolts from those smaller guns, to be added into quite a few more shots....

I also agree with those who've commented on removing the lasersbolts that show through the various 'transparent' cockpit shots.  That will REALLY improve the look of them all, if you plan to do that.

....and finally, your latest, brief ASTEROID SEQUENCE scene is bloody marvellous!!  It has come alive once more, compared to the SE version.  I love the new sort of 'veering' into it look.  Makes me proud to be British!  :)

You said "The whole asteroid sequence is having a makeover so be prepared. lol" -  Wow, can't wait to see what you are able to do with it all, as like the AT-AT scenes, this is one of my favourite scenes throughout the saga.

While the first SS shadow shot needs to be lower on the ground and flatter to match the AT-ATs shadow, the scene at 0:32 doesn't have a shadow for the SS at all!   On 0:35 -0:36, should there be a SS shadow on the AT-AT legs?  Also could use a mountainous background (and maybe a squad of SSs flying in the rear) for 0:50.

And as far as the transparent cockpit, it looks like Ady addressed this already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjEnjYe2Dbg&feature=related

I probably meant to do that myself then forgot and didn't apply it to any of them. I will add the dates now, using your list as a guide. :)

Interesting to see the speeder transparency issue come back again. I know it will be a non-issue in the end, though. ;) I do wonder if Ady plans to do anything with the lifeless instrumentation in the cockpit, though. Wouldn't want to see too much, just a subtle blink here and there, maybe? A simple static graphic instead of blackness?

You'll be glad to see then, that he now states on number 24 of his list on page 1, that he plans to add something subtle to the snowspeeder's instrument panel.

Ah yes. Thanks. I've been a bit forgetful lately, it seems. :p It'll be interesting to see exactly what he plans, because it really should be subtle so as not to draw away from the nice camera work and such. Don't want it to be like 'wow, look at how flashy that panel is! Hey wait, did the speeder just fly under a walker?' I dunno. That's why I mentioned maybe a static graphic with just a very small blink here and there.

At the least put a targeting graphic ala the X-wings and the MF gunports and maybe a radar .

Something along these lines:

Hell, here's a better one:

damn. Now i have to think of some other way of adding the graphics. ;)

Hehe, if those were too obvious there's also this:

:)

The old arcade game. Somewhat interesting in light of all the discussion - in that game there are many AT-STs on Hoth.

when luke is fighting vader in the carbon chamber and he knocks him off the side. Keep an eye on the left hand side of the screen as Luke jumps down. You will see his head bobbing back up into frame
