Well the mpegs floating around I've seen have all been from a dub of this tape, that a friend encoded as a VCD, then SVCD and eventually a DVD - but this would be about 5-6 years ago. A much better job could be done now if someone with the kit and the knowhow could get a copy of the tape.

I'll get in touch with someone I think is in touch with him still and see what happens.

Haven't posted on this thread in a while, and saw there was afew new posts, so I thought I'd post my revised shorts/rare ED stuff list after a good few months of trading with various people. On the advice of Molto I got a copy of WTW from Bill Piper/skinny puppy, this version is marginally better than the standard VHS>DVD version, probably one generation up. This DVD also has an early trailer for evil dead under the title book of the dead.

Everything listed below ranges from high VHS quality, down to almost unwatchable VHS quality. Its all either written on properly authored bootleg DVD-R's, or just lone VCD or DVD MPEG files on CD-R's

SEE REVISED LIST FURTHER DOWN

I'm still firmly on the lookout for a better copy of WTW, I traded for a few of the shorts a while back with someone who had them as PAL VCDs, I didn't get WTW with that trade, but the quality of those was a real improvement over the VHS>DVD version everyone has. if the VCD version of WTW charliesheen mentioned above is the same quality as the other VCD shorts i would jump at the chance to get a copy.

Hey See No Evil, glad to see you back around here. My sincerest apologies for always dropping the ball with our emails. I had a lot of stuff in my head for a while. I'll still gladly send you the ED materials I have so you can compare them to yours.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Yeh, Bill Piper got a dub of the tape from the guy I'm tracking down - he encoded everything (bar one short which had very poor video to the point of it being just audio) to VCD quality way back in maybe 2000 or 2001. He then redid Within The Woods to SVCD, and then again to DVD later - I never got round to getting the DVD copy from him. Last contact I had with him he mentioned not having the tape he used any more. This is why I'd like to track down the guy who made a dub for Bill - a copy of his tape using better gear than Bill used today, remastered by someone with the skills, would look better than the old VCD shorts, DVD WITW, and would include the short in such bad shape Bill didn't bother capturing it.

Does any of the ED2 material contain the deleted scenes that are found on Elite Widescreen Special Edition LD?

The scenes are explained at the now defunct Plastic Iguana site:

Yes, when i contacted bill about 6 months ago, he said he didn't have the original VHS tape as he'd traded it away. the only thing he had was the WTW DVD version which was just that with the BOTD trailer & gallery on a DVD-R. thats what i have a copy of. It was worth getting just to see the BOTD trailer which i havent seen anywhere else.

Cheers, ReverendBeastly. I'll drop you over an email regarding trades!

I see why no reason why a preservation effort for WTW shouldn't happen. I downloaded a MPEG recently that was of roughly comparable quality to Bill Piper's, though the sound seemed a bit clearer. Yes, there are going to be scenes where there will be tape rolls no matter what, but someone could easily go through it on Womble's MPEG Editor and correct the contrast, brightness and colour a bit more. Perhaps also use the higher-quality clips used on The Incredibly Strange Film Show? See No Evil has been working on a list of music used for the score (e.g. from Death Wish and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers) that could be utilised to create a better-quality soundtrack?

Here are some screenshots from each of the decent quality VCD shorts I have in my list:

If you compare these to the best quality version of WTW I have (I have 3 versions) This screen is taken from the Bill Piper DVD mentioned previously

It would seem very logical that there would be a much better quality version of WTW than this?

Just so everyone is on the same track - all of the VCD shorts and the WITW DVD (shown in the above screenshots) came from exactly the same VHS tape, which was a copy leaked by Scott Spiegel's assistant. Better copies of these will be out there, but are likely in Sam Raimi's vault. I would be very surprised if better quality bootlegs showed up.

What I'd like to see done, is get a copy of the tape the above clips are taken from, but one VHS generation back, into the hands of someone who can do a better capture job - and a remaster. The current VCD & DVDs all have digital/capturing issues.

charliesheen, I assumed there would be afew generations between the VCD shorts and the WTW DVD as the quality is so much lower on WTW, is that not the case? are you saying both the VCDs and the DVD both shown above came from the same tape at the same time? or do you mean that physically they came from the same source tape at some point down the line but the VCD shorts were captured from an earlier generation copy of that tape than WTW?

In theory the tape has to be out there somewhere, I know the VCD shorts posted above are all PAL 25fps, which would be UK/europe as opposed to the USA? just a wild guess but could have something to do with johnathan ross & the 'The Incredibly Strange Film Show' as johnathan & sam seemed quite friendly (they even made an ED2 UK trailer together) maybe he or one of his crew got PAL versions of all the shorts from one of the team?

I've often wondered myself whether either Ross or one of his crew made dubs of Within The Woods or Six Months To Live while editing The Incredibly Strange Film Show, but until one of them shows up willing to do some trading (and I doubt we'd hear from Ross!), it's something of a moot point.

I've just ordered the German DVD of Intruder that features Torro Torro Torro and Attack Of The Helping Hand, and will see if there's any difference quality-wise. I think it's very likely though that the MPEG versions See No Evil posted screencaps of above would have been the sources for that.

Another member of this forum has copies of a few other shorts, such as Shemp Eats The Moon and William Shakespeare The Movie, but I don't think he wants to trade.

Just thought I'd add a new post up here to see if anyone got any further with tracing
the first dub tape of the early super8 short films?

I posted my trades list above, but heres a revised list. it can all be available to this
project or other projects too. This list doesn't include retail stuff like DVDs & VHS
that can be bought in shops, just mainly stuff thats not been officially released.

Everything listed below ranges from high VHS quality, down to almost unwatchable
VHS quality. They have been sourced from a wide variety of DVDs & VCDs over the
years, so there is big a variation in formats & file specs. To overcome this (and so I
don't have to re-encode everthing loosing more quality) they're all written as direct
copy MPEGs data files from the source files onto 4.5GB DVD-Rs.

Quality Guide

(•    ) Almost unwatchable VHS quality
(••   ) Poor quality VHS

I found my Bruce Campbell Q&A I mentioned in another thread.  It's 30:32 mins and Rev and I think it is circa 1997.  It is before a screening of Evil Dead 2 and someone in the audience is recording Bruce talk and answer questions before the movie.  Bruce mentions that he and Rami had just finished the dvd commentary for the "96 minute cut of Army of Darkness" for Anchor Bay (and that HIS video tape copy is what they used for said release), so it's definitely first dvd release era.  He also mentions that Running Time will be released on video for rental in November and to buy in Jan (they use the word "VIDEO", not dvd).  It's decent quality in xvid avi, and suddenly cuts off and we see about 3 seconds of someone's bedroom door.  I downloaded it a while back and thought I had lost it, but I found it tonight.  If anyone wants it, especially for the project, let me know and I'll point you to where I have uploaded it.

Haven't vistited the site for some time, so i just noticed this thread. I have something that might be of interest. I recorded Bruce's comments after a CineVegas screening of 'My Name Is Bruce' about 2 years ago. Its pretty good quality video, from a cheap HD camcorder. 720P video. If you want it, you got it.
