it depends on what you think constitues a 'gimmick'... when sony set out to make the PS3,
they weren't too worried about the game portion of the system, because they figured they
had the market with that.. but they wanted to push the Blu-ray format, and also market
the machine more as an entertainment system with movies (etc), and not just games.
they had a heavy investment in blu-ray, and yes even though technically you can put
more data/etc on it, that was just a future proofing for it.... they really didn't think they
had much too lose when they did that...however, the added cost/complexity/and delay
for the system has caused them to be in 3rd place...
