I'd say it'd look kindof like Game & Watch Gallery 3's museum.  That would be pretty awesome to have a video game museum.

The guy uses some very weird wording in his attempts to be poetic. "Suspicious of my fellow treasure hunters", "coughed defensively". Don't get how either of those work in their context. Oh well. Always good to hear of someone rediscovering a great old console. I like the picture of NES, SNES, NUS, and NGC all together.

If I ever become so rich that I simply don't know what to do with my wealth, I intend to open up a console museum. Imagine a room filled with every console ever made, under glass and surrounded by its accessories, showing first hand the changes in technology, shapes, sizes, and designs of consoles and their media over their history. I'd even hire a tour guide to memorize the entire history of each console, give guided tours, and answer any and every question they get asked about each console. That would be pretty cool, but a long ways off, at the moment I am just a poor hobo living under a bridge, my laptop powered via an extention chord spliced into a nearby street lamp, and my faint, but existant, wifi signal lifted from some nearby resturant.

Hell, just hire me!  You wouldn't even have to train me.  I know all that stuff by heart (at least for Nintendo) already!  You know what?  Never mind.  Screw that.  I'll open my own video game museum...  Why should you get the money when I have the knowledge and the consoles?

Not me man, I live under a bridge.

As for something like this making a lot of money, I am not sure. Maybe it would depend on what kind of a city you lived in, a big city might keep such a thing afloat longer. But I think such a place would have such a limited appeal, that you would not be able to pull in enough money to even cover the initial cost of all the consoles and accessories, let alone rent and overhead. If I thought such a place could make money, I'd do it and hire myself to work there. You could even set up small TVs with the various consoles connected to them to allow visitors to try out each system.

Man, what a downer you are!  ^_~  Honestly, it wouldn't cost much for me to build the collection, since I already own most of what I need.  The downside would be that I wouldn't have free access to them anymore since they'd be on display where a bunch of grubby kids and no-nothing adults would be free to ogle them.  Damn them all!

I was kind of bored today and was flipping through the pages of this thread. Came across a fun discussion predicting the then next gen consoles, now current gen. Kind of amusing reading that stuff now that we are living it. Feels kind of like time traveling. Anyway, somewhere back in 2005, while talking about Playstation SW game, The Masters of Teras Kasi and how it was a bit crappy, Chaltab said...

Darth Chaltab said:Still, I'd like to play it a few minutes just to finally see a 3D Mara Jade in motion and such.

I can't understand why there has been only ONE game with Mara Jade in it, and a crappy one at that.

Even though this comment was made almost four years ago, being that Chaltab is still around, I thought I'd chime in and mention that Mara Jade stars in the fairly uncommon expansion to Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, called Mysteries of the Sith (which is definitely worth tracking down a copy of). In that game Kyle Katarn meets and befriends Mara Jade, then he goes on to be seduced by the darkside after the first few levels of the game. From that point in the game on you play as Mara. She eventually saves Kyle from the darkside, which is why in the beginning of Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast Kyle, no longer trusting himself with the force and the temptation of the darkside, has given up using the force and gone back to being an awesome gun toting mercenary. He only decides to go back and seek formal training from Luke's Jedi Academy™ after his partner is kidnapped (though he believe she was killed) by a Sith. Ah, good old Kyle, give up the force to avoid the darkside, then decide it is time to pick it up again to seek revenge...

Mara also appeared in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, I believe.

Portal is awesome. I still haven't downloaded and played the extra levels. I played through the story mode, gave it a break for a while, then when I returned to play through it some more it ran just laggy enough on my computer where it ceased to be fun.

As far as the 64 goes it was the second best console i ever owned. Two of the lesser titles i loved behind Mario and Goldeneye were Pilot Wings 64 and Blast Corps/Dozer. I played them all the way through. And for the nostalgia fans of the Nintendo64 can i just say one word-----emulation, as i can now do it all over again.

The best system for me, which i went out and re-bought recently was the Dreamcast.

I traded my 64 for a GayStation and the only reason that worked for me in the end was Final Fanasy VII. I traded my Dreamcast in and got a GayStation 2 and the only reason that worked for me was Vice City. I now have a GayStation 3 and im still waiting for a reason as to why i bought it....

Time

I am curious as to why you'd dish out such a large amount of cash for a PS3 if you are not a Playstation fan (and I assume you arn't by the GayStation talk).

I still have a hard time understanding why it was "all the cool kids" who had PlayStations (which Darth Solo has just minded me I used to call the Phony GayStation). I hate to say I was a Nintendo fanboy, but I guess I kind of was, not because I was obsessed with Nintendo, I just always found them better in every regard, and that is after giving the others a fair chance.

Never had a Sega or a Sega Genesis, played them at my friends houses and always felt the Nintendo was superior, I never had the slightest desire to own either of those consoles. The NES was fantastic, and you just couldn't compete with games like Metroid and The Legend of Zelda, two oldies I have still not gotten out of my system and constantly find myself coming back to again and again.

I had a Super NES at the time my friends were getting PlayStations, seemed pretty cool, 3D and all, I liked it. Then the N64 came out and from then on it was freaking hard to even look at crappy PlayStation graphics. Finally after years of owning a N64 and having beaten every game on the console that interested me (which is shamefully few, which was the consoles biggest problem), I was given a hand-me-down PlayStation, I was excited as could be to get the thing, all I needed was to buy a few games, so I scoured the internet looking for "best PS games of all time" lists and I checked out IGN for their highest rated games. I never could find a copy of FF VII. I had already beaten Metal Gear Solid on the PC, so... I bought Tony Hawk Pro-Skater... yeah... the PS sucks, every good game is available in far improved form elsewhere (save for the FF games, but I have never been a big fan). Still don't know what those goofballs were smoking who would brag about how wonderful their PSs were and how crappy the 64 was.

The PS2 however, is an amazing little system. I also got this one as a hand me down, and I love it to death. Honestly, it sucks severely, so ridiculously underpowered, and totally riding on the undeserved fame of the original PlayStation, but it has so many good games on it! From Ico and Shadow of the Colossus to God of War II to the GTA games and Bully and everything in between, it has got all sorts of great stuff. On top of that, it is backwards compatible to a very impressive degree, so if there are by chance any crummy games worth playing on the PS, you can play them on the PS2. Up until a while ago (maybe still) the PS2 was outselling the PS3 by some pretty impressive numbers.

For this current gen, I really think the Wii and 360 have it. Sony did the exact opposite of what it did last time, instead of being the first to put out an under powered console, they were the last and put out an amazingly over powered console. Sure its specs are impressive, but its price and game library are far from it. It is so far behind in sells, it will take a long while for it to catch up to the Wii and the 360 (and these facts are hilarious when you go back and read discussions in this very thread back on page 25 or so, where everybody was talking about Sony dominating and this likely being Nintendo's last console before going the way of Atari and Sega. Ha!)

I think Sony really hurt themselves with making the PS3 too powerful (which accounts for its overly high cost). Most developers want to make games on multiple platforms, which means they will max out at the specs of the 360 regardless of how much more potential the PS3 version could have had. MGS4 is a good example of this, it is going to be stuck as a PS3 only title, because it could never run on the 360 (never say never, but I would be quite impressed), as a result it may sell more PS3s, but in the end, there is an entire audience that might have bought the game that won't because they can't play it. And while the Blu-ray player may have been a selling point before/at this time, it wont remain so for long with the continual drop in Blu-ray player prices. Poor Sony, as their very own PS2 proved, over powered is not always better. I predict the 360 being the PS2 of this gen., which is to say the one with the longest shelf life and the best library of games.

The Wii also did a great job of creating a whole market of its own, it has ensured its own success this round regardless of power and library. Will they manage this again for the next gen? I don't know, but I wouldn't put it past them, with the Wii they turned around and showed us they were serious and not to be taken lightly anymore. I don't think they will give that spot up so easily.

Seriously, we need some more discussion going on in here, this poor once-great thread was on the very edge of falling off the first page.

I'm afraid that the wii is a gimmic to me.  It's useless other'n the Virtual Console, which I'd love if I didnt' already own most of those systems (save for TurboGraFX).  Homebrew helps, but mainly becuase now I can play MOD games on my tv rather than a cruddy PC.

Gimmick? I don't know. I just can't see it that way. And for a gimmick, it sure it holding strong. Its ability to play classic games from previous consoles and its 100% backwards compatibility with GameCube games, I feel it deserves a lot more credit than many of the doubters give it. Things like the Wii fit are are really great ideas.

Sure, it is not so much your traditional gamers system, but the audience that it does reach out to, it does a dang good job of reaching out to.

However, it still has some pretty cool stuff for more traditional gamers, try playing a game like RE4 on it, I think the system has a lot of potential that they have not even begun to tap into yet, and unfortunately they may just stick to sports and part type games.

Actually, I have a friend who actually owns a Wii, and he is yet to buy a single game for it beyond Wii Sports that came with it. It is really ashame, what a waste. If there are more people who think like him and fail to see that it has the ability to do more than just play sports games. Freaken perfect for shooters.

I still love my Wii, but I am afraid that it might be seen and treated as a gimmick, and I think Nintendo is really buying into this as well.  I see far too many mini-game type games and not enough big, immersive Zelda and Mario type games.  It's hard to blame Nintendo, because they're making what's selling, but I wish they would cater a little more to gamers and not just the "outside demographic."  I love the games I have for my Wii, and I have no intention or desire or interest to pick up a 360 or a PS3.  I'm just afraid Nintendo might be going a bit overboard when the Wii has proven itself capable of improving upon traditional games as well.

Also, I just got my Wii hooked up to the Internet for the first time in months and celebrated by downloading Rockman 9!  Amazing!  I loved it!  But apparently it has additional downloadable content.  Does that cost money too?  I haven't checked yet, but if it does, I'm sorely disappointed.  When I download a game, I expect to get everything, especially when it cost $10 for a download!  I shouldn't be expected to shell out more money for additional content.  That's ridiculous!

Hmm, I certainly agree with you about the silly little mini-games going wild on the Wii. I think the DS is suffering from that as well. Nintendo kind of disappoints me with this, because their system can do so much more. I would have never bought a DS based on the game library out there, the reason I bought it is because I saw what all it could do with homebrew and how easily and cheap it was to get an R4 in order to run homebrew on it. Now I use the thing for a movie player when I travel, and ebook reader, I use it to play my old classic adventure games via SCUMMVM, I use it to play my SNES and NES and GB games via emulator. It really is a brilliant little device, but to be honest, I wouldn't care a thing about it if it were not for the homebrew. All the games for it I have seen, save for a few, are all those silly mini-game sort of things. It needs more Metroid Prime Hunters and Phantom Hourglasses. It is able to handle these great games perfectly well, why not make more of them?

I can see where guys like bkev might find the Wii gimmicky, but I feel that it is just another step in video game evolution that Nintendo, like usual, is pioneering. A Blu-ray player on PS3, how is that not a gimmick aimed at selling consoles?

Anyway, I guess you guys are right.  The Wii is a good concept, but unless I'm online brawling, mine is gathering dust in the corner.  It's *being* used as a gimmick, and right now Nintendo is cashing in on that.  I wouldn't mind a serious game or two, you know?  I love mini-games, but not as FULL games.

it depends on what you think constitues a 'gimmick'... when sony set out to make the PS3,

they weren't too worried about the game portion of the system, because they figured they

had the market with that.. but they wanted to push the Blu-ray format, and also market

the machine more as an entertainment system with movies (etc), and not just games.

they had a heavy investment in blu-ray, and yes even though technically you can put

more data/etc on it, that was just a future proofing for it.... they really didn't think they

had much too lose when they did that...however, the added cost/complexity/and delay

for the system has caused them to be in 3rd place...

The Wii is a total gimmick and was never meant to be nintendos next gen system hence the name change from the revolution to the wii.  They are working on there next gen system right now that will be for HDTV's.  Currently they are behind Sony and Microsoft in terms of tecnology unless you count gimmicky kiddy games that you play with a thing that looks like a tv remote, lol.

In terms of next gen hardware and graphics and processing power the PS3 wins hands down.  Too bad the only game worth owning that is an exclusive on that system at the moment is Metal Gear 4.

They lost exclusivety to GTA4, and of course the yet to be released Final Fantasy XIII.  Which was a huge blow to sony and a big win for the 360.

Sony got a lot of the Nintendo faithful back in the ps1 era when they landed final fantasy VII as an exclusive, that and the PS2 came along and the ps1 and ps2 were like the snes before them great role playing game systems.  I left nintendo once square went to work for sony, and never looked back.  I have not missed anything as nintendo continues to just do stupid remakes of mario, zelda, and metroid and does nothing original except in terms of gameplay.  I like games that tell a story.   Yeah i played a bit of twilight princess on someone elses wii, but it was largely a ripoff of a link to the past and some other wolf game.

They only have exclusivety To final Fantasy versus XIII the spinoff that has nothing to do with the main franchise game.  Also possibly Exclusivety to God of War 3 is it ever gets made, lol.

Still they are i have heard programming the HD games at 720P and not 1080P yet.

Microsofts tentpole franchise is Halo and there are currently no plans for a 4th Halo game.  And if it does get made it will be without bunjie.  Then Of course they get a limited time of exclusivety on Mass Effect 2 before it gets out on the pc.

I am pissed that there will be no Knights of the Old Republic III for the 360.  They are making a stupid mmo that goes hundreds of years beyond revan and they never tell you his fate.  Where the hell is star wars battlefront 3 for the 360 i have been waiting forever for that.  Where is the Indiana Jones game that had san francisco as a location?  All we got was Travelers Tales Lego Indiana Jones, and the in house Force Unleashed which sucked.  Now that Lucasarts are outsourcing all their games will any good new star wars games be made.  I want another Kyle Katarn game for the PC following the last game Jedi Outcast.

We could always beg for a next gen game trilogy like the super star wars trilogy for the snes that followed the original movies.  Too bad Lucas would probably insert references to the prequels and special editions.  A game set in the real oot would be awesome though.   But to use footage from the movies in game would require using the less than stellar gout, thanks a lot george.

I'm surprised at you, sky.  You usually have pretty accurate info, but this is just... wrong.  Of course Wii was meant to be their next gen system.  What else did they have in the works?  As a counter example, the DS was not supposed to supplant the GBA.  It was a branch out into another kind of handheld market and to co-exist with the GBA.  But it did so well that it did replace the GBA (of course, being compatible with the GBA didn't hurt... kinda makes you wonder if that was their intention all along after all!).  As for Wii not being the next-gen system.  That was always what they were promoting ever since the GameCube came out.  Revolution was never meant to be the name for the system.  It was just a code name, a place holder, just like GameCube was known as Project Dolphin before it was released.  I was quite surprised when there was such backlash over it losing the name Revolution because I never expected it to continue to have that name.  Don't believe me?  Just check the serial part number for any GameCube or Wii component.  All GCN hardware start with the prefix DOL (for Dophin), and all Wii hardware have the prefix REV (for Revolution).  They were always the same thing.  It's just a nod back to that "working title" (like Blue Harvest!).

But, yes, you are right that Wii isn't the technological powerhouse that its contemporaries are.  It's never tried to be.  It's always been up front about that.  And it's never bothered me.  I don't have an HDTV, and a lot of people don't.  Nintendo didn't consider it to be that big of a concern, and I personally don't think they're wrong about that, even two years later.  Once again, it all comes down to the games, which is what I'll agree they're having problems with because the gimmicky crowd has become its main consumer base.  But the good games are good regardless of whether they are in HD or not, so I've never understood how that's been a limiting factor.  If that was such a limiting factor, games like Mega Man 9 wouldn't be selling so well.

It's also the single most difficult system to program for.

And I don't understand why everyone thinks this Metal Gear 4 game is so great.  I was watching a friend "play" it the other day.  It had so many cut scenes that we eventually turned it off.  It was like watching a movie.  I think he was playing it for about 30 mins with maybe 5 mins of actual game time.  A game is meant to be played, not watched like a movie.

You do know that Microsoft owns Bungie, right?  If a 4th Halo gets made, it will be with Bungie since they're owned by MS.

That's because MMOs are really where all the money is these days.  Since Galaxies has become a total joke, they need something new.  I'd like to see a KOTOR 3 as well, but only if they go back to BioWare for it.

This.  Community and playability have always been Nintendo's claim to fame, never graphics.  The 64-bit Nintendo did have good graphics for its time, but the graphics have always come second.  Personally, I love the Wiimote.  The people that don't seem to like it (as far as I've seen) are the ones who've learned how to exploit it.  Yeah, you don't have to move it around that much in order to work the game, but where's the fun in that?  I like standing up in front of my big screen, moving the Wiimote, and really fealing like I'm in game.  Add in some multiplayer games and you end up with a winning system.  And that shows in the marketplace.  Until this year, I couldn't find a standalone Wii system either online or in stores.  They were selling out before they even arrived.  That's pretty good for a system thats been on the market for 3 years and doesn't output HD.

Actually, the way you move the Wiimote depends upon the game. Some you can't just get away with wiggling around. In the case of the new Wii-mote attachment, it's become far more accurate and games should be able to require far more involved (a.k.a. potentially fun) motions (assuming anyone makes good games using the attachment).

Just got done playing the demo of Resident Evil 5. I can't wait for the whole game. It has the same style and control of Resident Evil 4, which is definitely a good thing. The co-op feature is sure to be pretty awesome too. Graphics are excellent of course, and despite the level from the demo taking place in broad daylight, it still managed to be every bit as creepy as the overcast villiage of Resident Evil 4.
