STAR TREK: EXCELSIOR

DVD Cover Preview

“Stardate 9521.6, Captain’s log, USS Excelsior, Hikaru Sulu commanding. After three years, I have completed my first assignment as master of this vessel, cataloging gaseous planetary anomalies in Beta Quadrant. We’re heading home under full impulse power. I’m pleased to report that ship and crew have functioned well.”

I started making this because I wanted to see what a series with Sulu at the forefront would be like, however, when I first started making it, I imagined it as a Pilot episode. However, towards the end, I realised that it is closer to a last episode.

So first, imagine there was an Excelsior TV series, and then imagine this as the last episode. It doesnt make complete sense, but certainly goes a long way to prove that a Sulu series could work.

Were you able to solve the little continuity problem of the character who dies in the Voyager episode, but is seen alive and well on the Excelsior bridge at the end of TUC? ;)

Where were you in '77?

Well I chose to leave his death out actually. I did this not because his character appeared again at the end (because he could simply have been cropped out), but because it took place during a Klingon attack and we never saw how it ended and no damage was seen in the final confrontation.

So yeah - I kinda worked around it. =]

I've had a look and it's pretty good, I always wondered what a merger of Flashback and The Undiscovered Country would look like - the scenes work well together and ignoring Janeway isn't that hard.

My only gripe is that you've had to include so much other ST VI footage, essentially showing a truncated version of the film, but what else could you do?

Well, if you're really into the idea of doing a one off Excelsior episode try having a look for some more footage of Excelsior class ships - plenty appear in TNG, and in DS9 you might even find some nice battle scenes?

Maybe with shrewd editing you could create an alternative plot that doesn't revolve around the plot of ST VI; perhaps the shockwave comes from something else? And the 'rescuing of old friends' needn't be Kirk & McCoy.

The other option is to go for an extended cut of ST VI using the Flashback footage.

Given the wealth of material availiable accross the films and series, I reckon you could cobble together an interesting piece.

I think I'll leave anything that complex to someone else - I wouldn't have the time to make it.

Hope you enjoyed all the same. :)

Well, I'm having a sneaky look on this now...it's an interesting piece and a shame that the edit is limited to such a low number of available sources. It needs slightly less Kirk material as his part in the story seems quite sudden or perhaps a new way of introducing him. Because of this, Sulu does seem to be a bystander rather than a main protagonist. A widescreen presentation would have been better given that the pan and scan version of STIV chops off a lot of the pic but a good effort nonetheless.

George Takei did lobby for a number of years for a Sulu TV show but I think he's moved on from that now. A nice little peek into 'what if....' territory. Needs a little more polishing but a good effort.
