I was watching ESB on Spike TV last night and saw a couple of things that I did not see on the list (page 1).

1) during the Cloud City battle between Luke and Vader I could not see the blue or red glow from their sabers. Can anyone else?

2) when Vader is talking to Luke on the platform (after cutting Luke's hand off) you can see the shell of Vader's helmet moving in the wind.

Ady,

I wasn't sure if the list is final, but I wanted to throw those in there if it's OK.

Thanks.

Which part? I didn't see any missing glows when doing the colour correction. Could you give a timeframe at all or a bit more information?

Yeh, this has been mentioned. I'm not sure if i'll be doing anything with that because we do see that the hood part of the helmet is separate and it does help show just how windy it is up there.

No, the list isn't anywhere near final yet. Ther are just so many things to add to it yet.

Ah, I meant to be more descriptive. Sorry.

What I meant to say was that there didn't appear to be any saber glow bouncing off either Luke or Vader during the Cloud City duel.

Boy, that sure isn't hard to do. I think they're trying to set some sort of record for most amount of times played for something they've purchased the rights to! :p Kinda like how TBS would play "Jaws" and "Zoolander" with ridiculous frequency.

And I don't think there are any of those glows in the OT at all, are there?

Ah, as in their lightsabers weren't creating light because they were metal poles on set.  Yeah, that would be great, but I don't see how Adywan could create light reflections where there wasn't any on set.  I think that's something we'll just have to live without.

Of course, I could be wrong, and Ady has already thought about how to make that work, but it seems impossible to me.

Creating a colored light reflection is possible. Not sure how great it would look though.

Seems like it would be a lot of trouble to go to. Sure, the reflections were cool in the PT because they had the ability to do it, but it's not something that ever bothered me about the OT. I found it was the shadows cast that stood out more.

Ady, with all due respect, I think you should stabilize Vader's helmet in the scene. I know that logically it should move, due to the wind in the platform, but the movement looks a bit silly and distracting in my opinion.

I couldn't agree with you more, that is the 1 thing that always sticks out to me to,a little movement is one thing, but man does that baby move.

I like the helmet moving a bit because not only does it stress the wind, but it also reminds us again of it being a mask encasing Anakin.

I agree with leaving the helmet movement. Also, someone brought up the saber glow thing back when ady was doing ANH, and he said he wasn't going to bother. Also, I'm pretty darn sure the glow is not in the prequels, well for the most part that is. It is inconsistantly present in some shots, but not in most shots. It is there for CGI characters like Yoda, but not for real live actors, except for that one part during the duel between Anakin and the count in Episode II when the lights go out. To the best of my knowledge, that is the only scene where they actually used light up saber props specifically to get that lighting effect.

The lightsabers have never been consistent. They look different from film to film and even from shot to shot within the same scenes.

Please Adywan make the sabers less fat than you did in ANH.

Author

Please keep it how it was in ANH:R. Keep it consistent my friend. If you had glows in ANH:R, then do it here, but seeing how you didn't don't bother. And the width of the sabers in ANH:R were perfect IMO

It would be cool if there was way to make the lightsabers sheen on the enviroment, specifically in the more dimly lit scenes.  It's ok not to in scenes that are more brightly lit, but in dark areas, it really needs it.

Now that's what I'm talking about. And in the Cloud City duel, Luke and Vader are mostly in the dark so the saber glow reflecting off of them should be there, but if Ady doesn't want to do it, then I'm OK with that. It was just a friendly suggestion. :-)

As far as the helmet goes, I know it shows that it's windy on the platform, but doesn't the cape capture that? It just seems to make the helmet seem fragile to see it moving in the wind. But hey, it's all good.

if he needs a reason not to do it, ady can say that the gas has thickened the air in the chamber and therfore the lightsaber "light" can not shine through.

That part in AOTC where the lights go out and you can see them illuminated by the saber glow will be going from my revisited version. Its just horrible. They're supposed to be in battle but its so obvious that they are just swinging the sabers around their heads. Also it only seems that the CG characters have any sort of glow added to them for the most part so i don't think i'll be adding any form of glow on the characters

There was a reason for that in ANH. If you look at the original FX the sabers have some really harsh jagged edges and the thickness changes due to the changing light intensity as the sabers move shining off the reflective strip on the saber. Unfortunately making them slightly fatter was the only way to cover them. But they are still nowhere near as fat as they appear in ROTJ. Boy those are going to be a nightmare to fix.

Just a thought about the moving mask thing: in ROTJ when the Ewoks fight inside the biped walker, the imperial soldier also have an obvious moving plastic helmett.

One of the things that I actually really like now about ANH:R are the thicker lightsaber glows.

They have grown on me a lot, now that I am used to them since my first viewing, and the original ones seem very weedy in comparison.  And they ended up having an overall thicker look in ROTJ anyway as has been pointed out.

lightsabers are supposed to a technical marvel that have to be constructed using the force, and have an efficiency beyond what is capable with conventional engineering. this efficiency would not allow for wasting energy blazing light in all directions to cast reflections

i realise not emitting light this way would effectively mean lightsabers should be invisible - but let's face it that would suck big time - can you imagine! lol!
