Star Wars (1977)
Cinematography: 10/10 – The editing and the camera work is some of the most iconic ever
Plot: 10/10 - Classic story perfectly done IMO
Acting: 8/10 - I thought they were great most of the time except for a few places
Dialogue: 7/10 - Could’ve used a little more work in some places
Special Effects: 8/10 – Still holds up today a lot better than the CGI in the prequels if you ask me.
Score: 10/10 – John William’s best work, perhaps the finest score ever?
Overall Ranking: 8.8/10
Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Cinematography: 10/10 – Especially amazing in this one, it’s hard to imagine Hoth wasn’t real.
Plot: 9/10 – Great, but the fact that it doesn’t have a clear beginning or ending doesn’t make it feel as whole of a movie.
Acting: 9/10 – An improvement over ANH
Dialogue: 9/10- Also an improvement
Special Effects: 9/10 – Battle of Hoth and Yoda are amazing, but cloud city detracts a point
Score: 10/10 – John Williams continues a genius score, a lot of originality while continuing the Star Wars feel
Overall Ranking: 9.3/10
Return of the Jedi (1983)
Cinematography: 9/10 – You can tell Richard Marquand was not as innovative as Irvin or George with ANH, but it is still great.
Plot: 8/10 – Recycling the plot from ANH detracts some points, but I thought they still did a good job at keeping it original.
Acting: 8/10 – On par with ANH
Dialogue: 8/10 – While Ian McDiarmid had great lines, not much new here
Special Effects: 9/10 – If it weren’t for the Rancor the super star destroyer blowing up and a few other things, I would give it a 10
Score: 10/10 – Mixes a lot of the previous two scores and adds some new work, I thought it was perfect
Overall Ranking: 8.6/10
The Phantom Menace (1999)
Cinematography: 8/10 – Camera work was good, now the CGI that’s a different story
Plot: 6/10 – Interesting in some ways, confusing and ridiculous in others, at least it was unique
Acting: 5/10 - Average
Dialogue: 6/10 – Also Average
Special Effects: 6/10 – Now I thought the CGI in this one was not so distracting and used well in some places. It was still really awful in other areas with the Gungans, Pod racing, and Jar Jar
Score: 8/10 – I thought John Williams continued the Star Wars quality here.
Overall Ranking: 6.5/10 – I didn’t think this one was that bad. I thought it still felt like a Star Wars movie and George stirred up some good ideas to build on. If Episodes 2 and 3 were actually good, I wouldn’t mind this one that much.
Attack of the Clones (2002)
Cinematography: 5/10 - Average
Plot: 3/10 – Awful, contrived, cheesy and poorly done, insults our intelligence
Acting: 3/10 – I don’t think I need to explain this
Dialogue: 2/10 – Likewise
Special Effects: 3/10 - I thought the CGI in this was absolutely terrible. While George used mostly CGI in TPM, he still mixed it up with REAL stuff and used film, in this it looks like almost all CGI and the digital cameras make everything look all artificial.
Score: 7/10 – It’s good but it is too romantic and over dramatic for the crappy love story
Overall Ranking: 3.8/10
Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Cinematography: 6/10 – Again only average, there was some good work, but for the most part it was condescending and boring with all the close up shots of Anakin and crap
Plot: 4/10 – The mechanism for turning Anakin to the Darkside has to be the laziest, most cliché ever.
Acting: 4/10 – Only slightly better than AOTC
Dialogue: 3/10 – I thought there was a big decline in quality after TPM
Special Effects: 4/10 – George continues to use video game CGI for his entire movie
Score: 7/10 – Nothing original here, just a recycle of the last 5 films combined. Cheesy and over dramatic for what was seen on screen.
Overall Ranking: 4.6/10

Can I sue you for this Hotrod?

A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em
Star Wars:
Editing/Cinematography- 10/10
Excellent
Story/Writing- 7/10
A classic adventure tale, not much else to say. Some bad lines
Acting- 8/10
Believable. alec guinness was great. Others were decent.
Visual Effects/Art Design- 9/10
Imaginative "used future" look. Imaginative characters are made believable. Budget and time constraints are evident. Somewhat dated
Score- 10/10
Classic
Overall: 9/10
(A classic, groundbreaking film)
The Empire Strikes Back:
Editing/Cinematography- 9/10
Lots of classic moments. Moves a bit slowly compared to the first one.
Story/Writing- 9/10
A lot more going on. Much more depthful and resonant. Less cheesy
Acting- 8/10
Good job making FX characters like Yoda believable. No more Alec Guinness :(
Visual Effects/Art Design- 8/10
Continues great design started in ANH. Still Dated. Less imaginative by today's standards
Score- 10/10
Classic, although there are a few weirdly misplaced themes
Overall: 9/10
(A classic. Remembered for being better than it's predecessor)
Return of The Jedi:
Editing/Cinematography- 8/10
Lacks the deft editing of the previous two. Still great though
Story/Writing- 6/10
Entertaining at the beginning and end but ultimately a missed opportunity.
Acting- 7/10
Up to par with ANH mostly. Some scenes poorly acted. Ultimately a step down.
Visual Effects/Art Design- 9/10
The movie's saving grace. Especially on Tatooine it looks spectacular.
Score- 9/10
Still Great
Overall: 8/10
(A bit of a disappointment but by no means a bad movie. A nice ending if your watching the 6 as a saga)
The Phantom Menace:
Editing/Cinematography- 8/10
A Mixed Bag. Some Great moments. Drags on a little bit.
Story/Writing- 6/10
A bit cheesy and a bit of a missed opportunity but more entertaining than Jedi IMO.
Acting 5/10
A lot of Bad. Liam Neeson and Ewan MacGregor are good. I can't say that for anyone else.
Visual Effects/Art Design- 9/10
Most Impressive. A bit childish at times though.
Score 8/10
Still Great. could use a few more OT themes
Overall- 7/10
(An entertaining, fresh Star Wars but obviously more child oriented. Not sure whats up with the acting...)
Attack of The Clones:
Editing/Cinematography- 6/10
Nothing Special here. Movie drags along
Story/Writing- 4/10
Just badly done. Bad writing and not much of a story to speak of
Acting 4/10
Has gotten even worse. Ewan MacGregor and Christopher Lee are good but by no means save the rest of the cast. 4/10 only for some good moments.
Visual Effects/Art Design- 6/10
The Battle of Geonosis features some great looking but design but overall there is way to huge a reliance on digital effects. I'd take the bland look of Empire over the cartoon look of Clones any day.
Score- 6/10
Nothing noteworthy except across the stars theme. I'm going to guess that the editors had more to do with the problems with the score than Williams
Overall- 5/10
(Barely enjoyable. Doesn't even feel like Star Wars)
Revenge of the Sith:
Editing/Cinematography- 8/10
Pretty Good. Montage at end is very well done.
Story Writing- 5/10
There is more substance here than Clones but writing is still often cringeworthy
Acting- 6/10
A ramp up from Clones. Ewan MacGregor is good as always and Ian McDiarmid delivers and excellent if exaggerated performance that's funny and scary at the same time. Lots of cringeworthy stuff from other actors though and some bad moments.
Visual Effects/Art Design- 8/10
It still looks video gameish but there are so many breathtaking spectacles that you may be willing to forget that and just marvel at the scenery. It doesn't look like Star Wars but it's great for what it is.
Score- 7/10
A big step up from clones but there's lots of missed opportunities.
Overall- 7/10
(Has a lot of the same issues as clones but it's far more entertaining. Feels like a part of the sage)
The Clone Wars:
Editing Cinematography- 7/10
Well Done. The movie is no Wall-E however
Story/Writing- 7/10
Again Well Done. Obviously more child oriented
Voice Acting- 6/10
Decent. Isn't going to win any awards
Visual Effects/Art Design- 8/10
Very enjoyable. Works well. I really like the wood carved, hand painted look and the matte paintings. Has a classic Star Wars feel as well as a prequel grandness
Score- 5/10
Not comparable to a Williams score. They should have gone with stock Williams music. Takes away from Star Wars feel
Overall: 7/10
(It's ambitions aren't the same as the other movies but for what it is, it's good)
And that's my opinion
My top ten
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Star Wars
3. Return of the Jedi
4. The Phantom Menace
5. Cutscenes on Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight
6. Cutscenes on Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire
7. The episode of Animaniacs that parodies Star Wars, featuring Pinky as C-3PO and The Brain as R2-D2.
(and from this point on we drop down into the realm way below barely watchable,)
8. Star Wars Holiday Special
9. Ewok TV movies
10. Droid and Ewok cartoon episodes edited into features to sell on VHS
...
Oops, that's ten already. No room for episodes 2 and 3, a true shame really... oh well.

If we are talking about Star Wars then yes, I love the original editions. I also love the special editions and some fan edits, In fact I just got done watching SW revisted. what a mastepiece. It only makes me sad that he hates the prequels .

1. The Empire Strikes back ( A masterpiece)
2. Star Wars (total classic)
3. Return of the Jedi (the signs of the long slide down to the prequels)
4. Attack of the clones (the only PT movie the whole family enjoyed at the cinema but many cringe worthy moments)
5. Revenge of the Sith ( Total disappointment with everything being wrapped up in a rush at the end and the kids fell asleep half way through which was not a good sign)
6. The Phantom menace (the only Star Wars film i have ever walked out of the cinema speechless and depressed. Haven't been able to watch again since its DVD release. )

I have said many times that i don't hate the PT. Just because i rank them well below the OT doesn't mean i hate them (well apart from TPM). I just can't believe that you placed ROTS at number 1 above any of the OT. Are you serious or was that just to stir up some trouble because you don't like anyone that bashes your beloved PT? That film is garbage compared to ANH & ESB. Its worrying, and saddening, when i see when some Star Wars fans rate the originals lower than the PT.

This is the real star wars saga:
1977 Star Wars
1980 The Empire Strikes Back
1983 Return of the Jedi.
No abominable revionsionist crap that is not real star wars Like the 1997, or 2004 special editions or the lackluster prequels.
I had looked forward to the return of star wars after reading the Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn in the early Nineties, little did i know that lucas would cut up and butcher the negative of the original movies and bury them in replacement with inferior versions with bad cgi. Or that the prequels would be three big steaming piles of shit, followed by worse in Indiana Jones IV, followed by the even more awfull clone wars debacle of 2008. My Faith in Lucas ever making another good movie is long gone he has failed at least five times in that regard since the Phantom Menace in 1999. The last good movie pre cgi overtaken all garbage was The Last Crusade in 1989. And he did not even direct it.
Lucas will never get another dime of my money unless it be a proper restoration of the original films in theaters and on Home Video on dvd and blu ray, supervised by Robert Harris as the restorationist. The gout in 2006 was the straw that broke the camels back as far as the original fanbase Lucas abandoned was concerned. It was like a big Fuck you and middle finger to release a 1993 laserdisc transfer on dvd in 2006.
Lucas caused the rift in the star wars fandom between the old saga fans vs new by denying us our right to pristine copies of the original versions of the movies as consumers. By trying to force the 2004 editorial tampering of a classic down our throats.
i could somewhat stand the special editions or the prequels until he did what he did by disrespecting the movies that made him a very rich man and made us all fans.
Never mind that the actors, artists, and technicians who worked on those movies deserve better than to have them buried or released in inferior quality. It is an absolute outrage to deny the history made by the original academy award winning trilogy and replace it with a version that did not. It is the original versions of star wars and empire strikes back on the afi list even if lucas bars them from showing the original versions. The updates will always be an abomination in my mind as long as he keeps up the revisionist bullshit and suppresses the original movies.
“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.
The DVD release has some issues, yes. No one could deny that. But Im an original Star Wars fan and I like the SE and the prequels.

I wish you could too, before the division in fandom I could share my love of Star Wars with any fan. I truly miss those days, it was my one pure enjoyment in life. Nowadays I can't get into a conversation with anyone about Star Wars it seems without it turning into an argument of somekind. I wish everyone could enjoy Star Wars like I do. I really do. It makes me beyond sad when I watch Star Wars and think of all the people especially on these boards that dont enjoy Star Wars anymore.

We enjoy Star Wars fine. It's the prequels and the special editions we don't enjoy.

That's obviously your perogative to like what you want. I just found it strange that every movie on your list was an re-edit of some sort, be it official or fan. But anyway, here's my list:
The Empire Strikes Back-It's been my favorite since I was nine.
Star Wars-I appreciate it more every time I watch it, and now it's practically tied with ESB
Return of the Jedi-It always felt like Star Wars built up to something, and that something was ESB, and then it just sort of sputtered to the finish line with Return of the Jedi. It has some great moments, but it never captured me the way the first two did.
Revenge of the Sith-It had some moments that really captured me and even had me on the edge of my seat the first time I watched it. It definitely had some of the best moments of the prequel trilogy.
The Phantom Menace/Attack of the Clones-This one is hard. In 2002, I would easily say that AOTC is better than TPM. I felt that Clones felt more like Star Wars. Anakin was wielding his blue lightsaber. Obi-Wan had a beard and was in the mentor role. R2 and 3PO did things. However, R2 and 3PO were extremely annoying. The CG sets stand out much more now than I originally remember. TPM just feels like a real movie, the lightsaber fight was better, and, while it had some equally annoying parts, it felt like a good old-fashioned adventure movie. So it's hard for me to say which is better.
Revenge of the Sith-Wha???! How is this movie on my list twice?! Well, I've stated many a time that ROTS was both my favorite and least favorite of the prequels. It had some of the best moments, but it also had some of the worst moments. For me the other two prequels were pretty middle of the road. Nothing was really great, but nothing really stuck out as horrible. Sith had some moments I really loved, but it had some moments that I hated more than anything else in Star Wars. Like I posted here back in June 2005, any movie that makes me laugh at the deaths of children has something wrong going on. I'm sorry, but every time I heard them sadly refer to "younglings," my girlfriend and I started laughing hysterically. We even got dirty looks from the parents with young children, but I just can't take that word seriously. "Even the younglings," Obi-Wan moaned. I was rolling.
