If this movie is successful, I honestly believe people will give old Trek a chance again, not dilute the franchise or anything so silly.

Ha!  This just floors me.  If this movie is successful, why on earth would they even go back to old Trek?  They'll take one look at it and thumb their noses, just like they do right now.

But some of us are excited to be able to talk with their friends about Star Trek without looking like anti-social outcasts.  Star Trek either goes mainstream, or it withers and dies like it has been for years.  I'd rather it be mainstream.

If people treat you like an outcast because of the movies you like, then they're not worth talking to.  Seriously, depending on what you're discussing, there's no reason for that kind of shit.  Seeing the latest Trek flick with cool explosions and hot chicks in skimpy outfits isn't my idea of seeing a Trek film.

So yes, I'd rather see Trek die than see it go mainstream in order to capture an audience that isn't going to give a shit about it a year or 5 years from now.  I'd rather see it die than see it become the "blockbuster of the week".  Like C3PX said, it's about dying with dignity.

I'm sure it'll be successful though, based solely on the guy playing Kirk.  He'll bring in all the tween and teenage girls, just like the guy in Twilight.  And the young sexy chicks will bring in all the jocks.  So it'll definitely go mainstream, but conversations will be limited to "OMG! He's so hot!" instead of "I wonder how this is going to play out in the next movie?"
