It is the only way new trek will happen. If this thing Bombs Paramount would be well within its rights to never spend a dime on the series again.
Then so be it. If this turns out to be a terrible Trek, I'd rather see it bomb than see it be successful and watch Trek turn into yet another teeny bopper flick. Trek is better than that. Trek's success should not hinge on whether the "tween" crowd wants to see this or not. It should hinge on it being a good story or not.
Some people would rather Star Trek not exist than be reimagined. That just blows my mind. This isn't Lucas, JJ is not gathering all of the hundreds of hours of Star Trek that existed before and throwing it out. They're trying to get people interested in it again. More people will be willing to take the cheesy little 60's science fiction show we love so well a bit more seriously, maybe focusing on the characters instead of the cliches they came to be.
If this movie is successful, I honestly believe people will give old Trek a chance again, not dilute the franchise or anything so silly. The new movie will not take away your old ones. It looks like an alternate universe/timeline anyway, so anyone can ignore it if they choose to. But some of us are excited to be able to talk with their friends about Star Trek without looking like anti-social outcasts. Star Trek either goes mainstream, or it withers and dies like it has been for years. I'd rather it be mainstream.
But that's just me.
