Ha!...I missed that. Keep it, it is almost Christmas after all.

Also, has anyone wondered what the hell those red dudes around the Emperor in ROTJ were supposed to be (you know, Darth Solo's avatar)?  Yeah, I know they were SUPPOSED to be his guards, but being that Darth kinda threw him down a pit and other than the guest appearances they don't do anything.

Adywan: I know this is ROTJ and not EMPIRE, but when you finally get to ROTJ, just delete those guys out.  I know it's 3 or so years from now, but there's no point in showing a gun on the wall if you're not going to use it (as John Ford would say).

They look cool. Also, Palps does say "Guards, leave us" when Luke and his Daddy arrive. Plus (don't all shout at me at once here) they do the same thing in Sith (nothing - but look cool), so the continuity does work on that one instance.

Monroville, that is a link to an nzb file, which contains the links to the files stored in the newgroup. However, you need to actually have access to newsgroups, which usually means paying for a premium service. You also need a newsgroup program. Do some reading on how the newsgroups work on slyck.com if you would like to know more. It explains how this works very well. It seems complicated at first, and you may not want to put the money or effort into it. But they are there on the newsgroups for the taking, with a little effort.

Nice comparison mockup (a few pages back), but to me those TIEs look washed out, like the film is old or something. Blue provides a better contrast with the brown asteroids and black background.

Here is a mockup I did, using the models from the XWA Upgrade project.

On the left is the gray "ANH" TIE fighter, the middle is the blue "ESB" TIE they did, and on the right is one where I just took the desaturated blue TIE and put a blue overlay on it.

Now what happens when I up the color saturation (in Photoshop) about 50%:

To adywan, they look bad in 1980 ESB, but I just can't see it... and they go by so quickly, I don't think the average viewer is going to notice the difference between the properly colored blue TIE and an improperly colored one. They certainly don't look as bad as what I did above on the right, in the actual movie. Once you remove the garbage mattes, people will think they look great... all you need to do is make the color uniform. I thought the brilliant blue TIEs in the Executor flyby scenes (CGI enhanced for the first SE iirc), look amazing.

I do agree though that the TIEs in 1980 are INCONSISTENT, in that from one shot to the next, they look more blue, or more blue-gray, and some of the TIEs in the same shot look slightly more blue than the others. If you made them all the same uniform blue color (allowing of course for changes in lighting and so forth), that'd be the real improvement.

Perhaps if Ady did a brief clip showing what he means by a "properly" colored TIE (that we could compare to the 1980 "improperly" colored version), that would clear up all this once and for all?

Luke couldn't have a red lightsaber?

;)

(and for reference, Vader isn't Green in the comic, nor does Leia have flaming red hair, but everyone has a red saber throughout the Marvel Comics run... they were recolored to match the movies in the 1990's Dark Horse remix, though. Also Yoda was blue in the ESB series, and Jabba, irrc, was pinkish, in the ROTJ series).

(Gotta love inaccurate teasers on Comic book covers!)

I'm just teasing about the red sabers, but I thought people might need a nostalgic reminder that they weren't always blue (or even yellow)!

People just accepted weird inking back then because they had no choice. (Han's blaster is hot pink, for Pete's dragon!) Nowadays, that would be unacceptable. Haha. :p

I must say that the coolest Star Wars toys I've seen lately are action figures that are adaptations of the comic and concept art versions, complete with wildly inaccurate coloring! :D I'd like to get one of that scary looking Chewbacca.

Indeed. It's getting really, really old.

To adywan, they look bad in 1980 ESB, but I just can't see it... and they go by so quickly, I don't think the average viewer is going to notice the difference between the properly colored blue TIE and an improperly colored one.

Then why do you seem to care so much?

Perhaps if Ady did a brief clip showing what he means by a "properly" colored TIE (that we could compare to the 1980 "improperly" colored version), that would clear up all this once and for all?

Or, since the issue has already been settled and therefore there's nothing to clear up, you could just stop trolling. That'd take a lot less effort, and make a lot of people really happy...

All things aside, the debate over the Tie Fighters have GOTTA end.  Honestly, it's not like Ady's throwing away a perfect recipe for curing cancer.....it's an EDIT!  It's no different than GL himself has done MANY times since the initial run of SW.  Things are taken out, replaced, changed...etc., etc., etc. and there are many out there who embrace changes while others cannot think of ANY OTHER version of SW except the one(s) they saw in theaters the first time.

Fine.  Good.  Awesome. TERRIFIC.

In case it's been forgotten, this place has about 12 KerBILLION edits of 6 movies....and probably over 90% of them involve the GOUT.  Ady's determination and decisions made his SW:R edit what it is, and if the overwhelming feedback is correct then at some point he'll decide he needs to draw a line and whether we like it or not that's what it will be.  A few pages back I asked about something being done with the AT-ST's (remove them OR make them more of a threat somehow).  If Ady never even remotely considers the notion, then that's just another decision he made and for good or bad I will watch ESB:R and enjoy all 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the rest of the edit.  In the end, my suggestion is a drop in Ady's LARGE pool of ideas...the same as anyone else's.  If they cause a ripple effect and Ady adjust the level and flow of the pool then that's great.  If it turns out that suggestion drops onto a thin sheet of ice that's suddenly formed over the surface of the water, then even though it doesn't get through doesn't mean that the pool's gone dry.  It just means that there are other ideas that might hit a spot that doesn't have that thin layer of ice over it.

Come on now, let's all kiss and make up!

Kurgan, this is going beyond silly now. The examples you give with the TIE colouring mean absolutely nothing.  You have boosted the saturation (not contrast) of a model that originally had the correct colour and not one that was recoloured in post production. The panels remain black which is the way they were supposed to be. But like i have said before the colouring was added in post production and tinted the panels blue (which is more like the right hand picture but done a different way and not as extreme). You keep pushing that "you are right and i'm going to totally ruin the edit by making the TIEs grey" thing until it becomes troll like. And then you say that someone can recolour the TIES in a new edit after mine is finished. But that wouldn't be a new edit at all. It would just be recolouring TIEs, which is something i wouldn't be too happy with. If you want the TIEs blue then just watch the SE colour corrected version i will be releasing soon. You are becoming obsessed with this whole colour thing. Just let it go man before it eats you up. lol

I haven't even started the FX stage of things yet and things could change. I just don't know yet until i start that phase. but i'm just stating in advance that i prefer the grey look to the TIEs.

You mention in the thread you started that it wouldn't be that hard to recolour the TIEs correctly. I tried to explain just how hard and time consuming it would be but you just ignore that and continue. If its so bloody easy then why don't you do a complete scene with correctly coloured TIEs, without using new CGI models or using a blanket colour overlay. Make all the panels black as they should be. Make the highlighting correct and not just some recoloured piece of crap.

Trying to get another website to come over here and continue your argument and clog the thread up with repetitive argument to pressure me into making the TIEs blue is nothing more than bully tactics (but i notice you haven't had much success). And (not saying you said this by the way) so i'm bloody anally retentive because i am an artist that hates when colouring is wrong and i want things to look correct? So when a CG artist cringes at incorrectly done CG then he is being anal? Same with every other profession where they see that something is clearly wrong and want to fix it. Give me a break. You say that most people prefer the blue TIEs? well where is the evidence of that? Its been pretty even, with more of a swing towards Grey TIEs than anything else.

You say that they should be the correct colour that the model were(even though the photography process bleaches out the light blue colouring anyway).  does that include everything then? If that's what i should do then i guess i have some more colour work to do on a certain ship then:

Now that is a shot taken from the pre-2004 version of the SE. ILM forgot to recolour the Executor to give it the deep blue hue. So what you see there is the true colour of the ship as it was photographed. as you can see it has nothing to do with any colour problems as this was from the TV broadcast version taken from the theatrical print and the blue lights on the Executor are still intact along with the orange lights at the front of the ship.

So, since you posted that thread over at stardestroyer.net to get people to come over here and back you up then maybe i should repay the courtesy and post the link to that thread (which i can reply to because i can't register because it won't accept my ISP's email address).

http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=128493

If i could redo all the TIE FX with new CG models then i would be able to keep the proper model colour but that is going to be impossible

Lets just give this whole thing a break now Kurgan. I'm not going to reply to it anymore. I hate arguing with anyone and it seems silly to do so over something so minor as this.  At least wait until i've begun FX work on the damn thing :)

Adywan, first off, there's nothing malicious about me posting in another SW forum about this, since your edits get discussed there a decent amount anyway, and it's certainly not my fault that you can't register there. I don't have any leadership role on SD.net at all, period. I'm sure there are threads discussing your edit on many other boards out there, and (shock!) some of those folks may even be members here.

I'm sure the SD.net denizens would love to have people from here register to go talk to them about this and many other topics. That'd be sweet!

When I spoke about CGI models I was joking, but considering what you had going in ANH:R, I'm not so sure it would be a bad idea. What would it do, add a couple of months to the development time?

Now then:

I'm not saying that everything in the movie must be the exact color of the model (sadly my DVDs aren't on hand atm, but that shot is from the 1997 SE, and we're assuming that's the original Executor model in the shot, even so, it deserves to be blue, dark and scary!).

If that were so, then yes, we need to turn the sabers into white rods and so forth. No, I'm saying that the intention was always to have BLUE TIE Fighters. So you had both blueish models and blue tinting. There was never an intention to make them gray, this was done in the first movie as a concession to not getting the effect right (sort of like how painting the lightsabers was done because the original effect sucked and was such a hindrance, though in the later movies it became the norm).

So this is one of those changes that is being done as a "deliberate creative decision" (which is your right as your fan edit, of course) but not a case of fixing something Lucas screwed up. You yourself admitted at one point you would do them blue, except that it's too time consuming...  in which case I'd say, just get somebody to do the TIE masks for you, but I imagine nobody is volunteering to help you out directly these days.

So your objection is NOT that changing the color of things in post-production is bad, only how it was done... but then you say it's because you just don't like the idea of TIEs being blue... ?

Ady, my point in posting those pics was to show examples of the TIEs we've been talking about. It's not "silly" it's a demonstration. If you want my opinion, the second mockup I posted, middle TIE, is what I think looks the best, and closest to how it ought to be.

The one on the left (sorry if I didn't put big block letter labels in the jpeg what each one was, I tried to explain it below) was the gray TIE how it looks in ANH untouched, and how YOU want the TIE to look in your finished ESB:R.

The middle one is your "ideal" pic, how it should look... if it were blue, "properly done."

The one on the right is (as per your explanation of the "post production colors") how you say it looks in the 1980 film.

You say they were made blue only in post-production? That doesn't jibe with the models I've looked at. The models were a blueish color for ESB, different from the white/gray models used for the original Star Wars. The blue was merely boosted in the movie itself in various places to make it look brilliantly blue.

The first mockup I posted then would be how the two TIE MODELS looked respectively in ANH, ESB, and then the third on the right would be how they look in the movie NOW (according to you).

The second mockup trio shows what happens when you boost the blue. Boosting the contrast makes the blueish model look brilliantly blue, and the "tinted overlay" look terrible. I'm suggesting that going back to the blue-gray models and upping the Color Saturation (I mistakenly referred to it as "contrast," pardon me, in Photoshop7 it's the "Hue/Saturation" adjustment and I just increased the saturation) a bit will make them look fine. I'm not sure how the blacks and whites will turn to blue just because of that, but maybe you know something I don't?

Lightsabers trivia (none serious):

Well, since red (or pink) isn't anywhere CLOSE to blue, I don't think it's just a "weird inking" thing. The old faded comics look a bit pink, but the point is, the sabers were all reddish in the original Marvel Comics run.

I should correct what I said though, because (iirc), Luke's saber is suddenly blue in the ESB issues, and then green for ROTJ, but in the first run (around the time of the first movie's release, and leading up to ESB's release, they were all the red hue).

At least you didn't go here:

So you're going to be releasing a color corrected version first followed by a complete "revisited" version next year?

Now as to the colouring of the Executor. the original Blue colour always looked best so i will be keeping it blue (just not as much as it is in the 2004 transfers). the TIE's on the other hand will have their colour changed to light grey/blue. the change in colour will be more explained in ROTJ:R when you will see that the death star TIE's are all grey, whereas the the stardestroyer TIEs will have the slight blue tint to them. But all this may change when i get around to the FX work. Recolouring things can look very fake so, because many of the shots in ESB have the TIEs as grey, if there are any colouring problems then they will have to go back to all being grey. i would rather have the bland grey look than a fake recolour job that looks like the recoloured black & white movies. even using overlays can cause a lot of problems due to the framing of the movies in the GOUT compared to that of the 2004 set. using the GOUT for many of the chase sequence just wouldn't be possible.

But after all i have to remind people that i'm not doing a restoration at all so the colouring does not have to be the same. This is a re-imagining of the saga. If i was doing it as a restoration then it would be of the OOT not the SE

God that Dooey Joe is a tard, lightsaber syringe, hmm don't think so, he needs to just look closely instead of being a jackass. My two cents here they are:

I respect Adywan's decision, but if the original ESB ties were blue I don't see why they can't be still. But I have made a decision that whatever OT Edits Ady puts out are my new canon so whatever he does is now officially Star Wars continuity for me.
