If you think about it, jimbo, if you're buying a bootleg of the original cuts, then they really AREN'T going be released on the format. Cuz Lucas said he ain't gonna have it. Unless he plans to be a MAJOR asshole and re-releases the same set only Original Cut just to piss people off and make them spend more dough.

Now, I like the SPecial Editions. Greedo shooting first is weak, but those are the versions I usually watch. (Sorry.) I do have both cuts (alas, on VHS and in full screen.) I fully intend to buy the Special Editions DVDs on September 21. I will be a junior in high school then. I will skip school, go to Target, rush the door right as they open, and snatch up my boxed set. I will go home, and proceed to watch the Original Trilogy in all it's DVD glory back to back to back. Sheeyit, I'll watch TPM and AOTC too.

But if they think that putting out a DVD when what's on it is not what people want is gonna stop said people from buying bootlegs, they are KIDDING THEMSELVES. Half the people signed up here are probably not gonna even buy the SE DVD's on 9/21 (or, you know, EVER) because Lucas has to be such a pathetic little whelp and not put out what everyone wants. His crazy-ass "true envisionment" of the movies as SE's being how he wants them is what's gonna backfire and lose him a mondo amount of cash.

Now, show me where them "OT.com" bootlegs are at.

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I agree somewhat. Lets not let this get out of hand.

In any event, if your going to copy them, do them from the laser discs.

Hi. First post here.

Since we're allowed to talk bootlegs, does anyone know which versions of the original cuts are the best quality? I've heard some bootlegs are even anamorphically enhanced.

I have the original cuts on laserdisc but my player isn't the best in the world and there is quite a bit of noise in the more saturated scenes. I'm also starting to get the infamous red and blue speckles (laser rot?).

Are there any Original Trilogy LaserDisc copies on the internet that aren't 6 700meg files?

The file size seems incredibly excessive since a 3 hour DIVX movie is usually 2 700meg files. I'm downloading them, but it might take a few weeks or months even. So if there is another place I should look, I'd rather do that. If someone could PM me of where I might be able to download good quality OT Star Wars I would appreciate it.

I take it you haven't read the posts, Shimraa? Since the announcement of the Star Wars trilogy coming out on DVD (with no chance in hell of it being their original versions), Jay no longer cares if you talk about pirated bootlegs. Hmm! Change that last one to pegleg and the only thing left would be swashbuckling. But anyway, we couldn't before but we can now.

I'm all for that!

Perhaps this subculture of fans preserving historic art for fellow fans (or cinematic aficionados) is just the next big movement in cultural evolution.

I took out my treasured letterbox VHS set to watch them over the weekend, and while they held up surprisingly well for decade old magnetic tapes, they were still filled with jumps, glitches and overall blurriness. While I think we should limit our talks about bootlegs and piracy if we are to be taken seriously, the fact is my tapes are deteriorating as we speak. I just wish I could back them up just so I could limit how much I touched them, but macrovision prevents even a simple tape dupe, so there is even less reason to save them digitally.

And frankly, the classic OT deserves better than this.

Yeah, but if it gives us an alternative to purchasing the SE DVD set in September...

I am very anti-bootleg. Every movie and album I own is legitimate. I believe artists should be fully compensated for their work, and I believe the quality offered by an official release justifies the cost.

When I hear people tell me--with pride--how much they're getting out of Netflix thanks to their DVD burners, I get pissed.

I feel the current industry paranoia regarding movie and music pirating is more than just paranoia. While I'm worried they'll take copy protection measures too far, I can't blame them for trying to defend their intellectual property from a society that believes they deserve something for nothing.

The OT is different though. The official word from Lucasfilm is that the original cuts no longer exist. Period. They're gone forever.

If that's the case, is it really bootlegging? How can you bootleg something that doesn't exist? If Lucas truly has cast aside the original cuts as mere workprints not worthy of their own DVD release, why should he even care if people are copying old laserdiscs?

You also have to consider that we're talking about something the vast majority of consumers would be more than happy to pay for if given the chance.

I'm a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick. My favorite filmmaker, bar none. I don't think it's possible to convey my respect for his work with mere words. Pretend for a moment he's still with us and his collection of work hasn't been released in a wonderful box set. We're still getting by with pan and scan VHS tapes and the letterbox laserdisc of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick announces that he's no longer satisfied with his work on 2001, and he's going to replace some of the effects with CGI. The original theatrical version will not be made available on DVD.

I'd bootleg the laserdisc without hesitation. Despite all my respect for the creator of the work, his disregard for its effect on me renders that respect null and void.

That's what all this really comes down to. Respect. We respect the artist, and in return the artist respects us.

And we both respect the work. That is paramount.

I'm not feeling very respected by Mr. Lucas right now. Something tells me that if the theatrical cuts had a voice, they'd say that they're not feeling very respected by Mr. Lucas either.

I'm more than happy to give them the respect they deserve by preserving them for future generations, with or without Mr. Lucas's approval.

Jay, I absolutely share your feelings on all the issues you've adressed. Yet I do think we should exchange bootleg info solely through PMs, for the sake of the petition.

I would hate to see this site going down because of bootleg talk.
Other than that, my last public comment on this topic is: "Begun, the clone wars have."

i dont see how bootleg talk ruins this petition at all...

we are tryin to preserve these movies!!
do you not see that if no one bootlegs these movies then guess what... Star Wars the way we all know it would never exist again...

i try and keep my bootleg talk to a minimum but if bootlegging these movies is what keeps them alive then thats what must be done...

Well the idea is that if we, and by extension what we are trying to accomplish here is to be taken seriously by any private or public groups or companies, then we shouldn't engage in any non-legal activities that they would frown upon and hence dismiss us, such as talking about bootlegs or piracy.

That said, let me repeat that I support any means to back up and preserve any copies of the original OT that we still possess to ensure the public's continued access to our cultural history. I just wish I could make a tape dupe of my dying VHS, but unfortunately I can't.

Until George changes his mind and releases it officially, may the force be with us all .

Jay, I think what you wrote should be sent to Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox. They need to know that we are not just a bunch of idiots with nothing better to do. What you wrote speaks for myself, and I'm sure many others. Your point is clear and well spoken. You (we) NEED to be heard, and maybe now is the time.

I agree, but to me bootlegging is when you copy something that is not yours, then sell it. And thats my concern. Its one thing to make a copy for your own use, or even for a few friends, but when it becomes a source of income that is a problem

I totally agree that Lucas' stance ont he oT not existing blurs the line a lot here, but if we just go bootleg crazy then two things will happen:

1)The credibility of this site will diminish as it becomes a place for people to pan handle their bootlegs

2)Many people will jsut give up on the goal of the petition and just settle for bootlegs.

Thats all me and DAYV are getting at. I'd love to have a dvd burn of the OT laserdiscs. And Jay its your site and your policies, I'm just voicing my concern. I agree with everything you said above, if GL is saying the OV doesn't exist anymore then its hard to turn around and say we can't copy it, but the fact remains that the footage and sound in said non-existent OV is still his intellectual property to do with as he pleases.

If people want to talk bootlegs thats fine, I just don;'t want to see this become "that site where you can get a SW bootleg"

I don't think that will happen, rebel. If people want to get bootlegs, they will head over to eBay. I see dumbasses bidding on SE DVD's for megabucks. I guess they don't know whats going on. I believe there are thousands if not millions who still don't know about this petition, or the whole situation.
