Help with Microsoft Office

My main computer just crashed utterly tonight; it won't even start up. I grabbed my old computer from the back room and set it up, but it does not have Office installed on it. This is a problem given that I'm in school and need to write papers quite often. Obviously there are freeware alternatives, but I'd prefer to use the real thing.

Unfortuantely, the CD key sticker has been torn in half, so I can't install it again, and a CD key finder is useless because Office has never been installed on this computer..

Does anyone have a CD Key they'd be willing to spare?

sharing any sort of serials or hacks is totally against the forum rules.

It may be a problem with your powerpack as i have just had the same problem. try swapping the powerpack from your other computer, its really easy to do.

failing that try this. Its free:

I get that hacks would be against the rules, but why would legitimate serial numbers be?

And thanks, I may try that power-pack thing.

The fact of the matter is, you own the actual original cd, you have just run into challenges related to a function intended to prevent piracy. In your position, I wouldn't hesitate to do a few google searches...

Try the alternative to Ady's power pack swap - put your old hard drive in your working computer and see if it boots.  If it does, then you solved two problems at once - your data is intact and you don't have to re-install Office.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

The problem with someone sending you a serial is that it might not work with your version. it all depends on what build your office version is. Each build version has a different batch of serial numbers that can be used. I came across this problem when i purchased a second hand computer and it came with a legit copy of Office but without the booklet and serial number. I tried to input one i wrote down from a box in my local WHSmith but it came up as an invalid serial.

You could try putting the hard drive in the other PC as Ziz suggested. I wouldn't use the PC for too long though because with all the diifferent drivers between computers could cause crashes, but if you can get office started then you should be able to find the serial so you can install it on the other PC.

Well, I got the latest version of Open Office, so the problem is solved, though it still annoys me that after all that money went to Office, we can't use it because of a blasted serial number.

As for my crashed computer, it's under warranty, so it will be fixed eventually.

shouldn't you be annoyed at whoever ripped the key sticker in half?

You could still try loading the hard drive from the other system on the working system.  Even if it doesn't totally load right, you only need a minimally functioning system to get in, run a keyfinder, and then write down the key.

I would be if I knew who it was.

I love openoffice.org, but I understand the need for MS Office. You could try contacting Microsoft and explaining the siutation to them, they may help. You may need some proof of purchase, or they may request you mail them the torn peice before they replace the key, but they just might. You just never know until you try.
