 and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0g363Xh1SY

they used some type of hologram (not sure how it was done?),

in their coverage of the US election..

looks pretty cool.. i don't think they played the star wars music,

but the lady reporter said she felt like 'princess leia'.....ha ha..

she should have said, 'help me obi-wan kenobi, your our only hope!'

Basically, they did it the same way it was GL did it on the Star Wars movies. She isn't really there is any sort of hologram, they use a green screen setup and add her into the video. Not really much more hightech than your standard green screen weather maps the TV stations have been using for years. Just a silly gimmick by CNN to awe people. You have to admit, it is more entertaining than the standard split screen discussions that are normally used for communication between two people in different locations.

Yeah, it was cheesy, and my girlfriend laughed at me when I expressed my outrage at what wasn't really a hologram at all.

The stupid thing was that they pretend it was a real hologram. "We have Jessica live via hologram" "You're a hologram now" "How do you feel being the first one beamed in" (oh yeah, good Star Wars terminology right there) "I'm following the tradition of princess Leia!" They made a big deal about it, which just highlights how lame it was that it was fake. If they had simply just done it without saying anything and not calling it a hologram, it would not have been as insulting to our intelligence.

They did lie outright although it is a bit different than simple bluescreening because it is a live conversation and the did have like 30 cameras pointed at her. I believe its called a "tomogram" when a 3d image is composited in a scene live. They could change camera angles and whatnot and she would still be in the right place.

The problem with a Star Wars style hologram is that projections require some sort of medium that reflects light. We can't make light just go to one point and then stop. Its' the same reasons they fill laser-tag arenas full of fog--because otherwise we couldn't see the lasers.

That part of the technology is actually pretty cool. The processing power required to combine images from 30 video cameras and coordinate that with the roving camera angles in the studio, all in realtime, must be pretty hefty.

CNN went the way of Sci-fi with this. It's stupid to set up about 80 HD cameras just to fake a hologram to wow audiences on a news network. 4 cameras on either side would've gotten the effect and, been less costly. Sure the camera angles would've been limited but, after anyone finds out it's fake who the hell cares!?

Here explains that 40 cameras are used for one rig. They did it for two people. I forget where they were so, if they were in different places 80+ cameras for this gimmick were used.

Here's a tell all video of the fakery. Also the reason they bothered is explained too.

All this is going to do is create more news programs to find the next flashy thing to add to draw people in. Real or, not. They might not even cover real news after a while. Just concetrating on whatever's the trendiest thing at the moment. Local news soon to become Entertainment Tonight complete with sci-fi special effects. This reminds me of that time Oprah had the pregnant "man" on her show. However, that pregnant "man" was born in a completely female body.
