Digital Bits thoughts?

I have to vent after reading Bill Hunts column on the bits today...

i remember the day that they joined us in this petition and they were advertising it as much as they could.. but now what does he say? "no amount of protesting, boycotting and petitioning by the fans will make that happen" I think it was Jay who said this on here that people dropped this petition when it was yesterday's news. I couldnt agree more. It disgusts me that they took off the link to our site so long ago and have never mentioned us since then.

More interesting things in the article is how he tries to make the bits seem like the samaritan of bootlegging. "We don't condone bootleg DVDs here at The Bits" haha this i have to laugh at. They dont condone it, however they have a link in that same article which has stats on each of the different bootlegs. So in other words you dont condone it but figured you would give all the information possible. Thats like saying i dont condone drugs but i show my kid the proper way to bump a line.

last but not least is how similar his post sounds like the originaltrilogy petition speech. Please read both and tell me if you notice any similarities?
its kinda funny actually

I dont know about anyone here but i think i've really lost the love for Star Wars. Before it was all about discussing the movie with friends over a big bowl of popcorn and carbonated sodas. But now it just brings out the worst in people. I dont think you can go on one Star Wars message board and see someone bashing the movie and what it has become. Its probably just late and i'll probably end up regretting this whole rant but i just need to vent these feelings to see if there is anyone else out there who is just getting sick of all of this. Well i am.

** oh ya and i apologize for posting this four times without any message inside. im not sure what happeded **

Know i agree, a lot of people are sucking the fun out of SW, and I don't just mean those who dislike one or more of the prequels. There are many people who think every frame of these movies is perfect (which is fine) but they choose to go on zealous rampages to try and convert others to Lucasdom, as though uncle George will be the one waiting at the pearly gates to decide who goes to heaven and who goes to hell.

And in general SW itself is starting become less fun to me, I find that the prequel era (not just the movies themselves) and the attitude and statements of GL on several occasions has actually diminished my appreciation for even the OT. There was a time when SW seemed like this great thing and GL this incredible visionary, but it feels more like the ANH, ESB and to a lesser extent ROTJ were just flukes, that GL got lucky and a lot had to do with the other creative people involved.

I'm starting to buy into all that crap that forumnerds innondate me with day in and day out, that the OT is in reality no better then the PT. And that disheartens me to no end.

I think its important to take a step back from SW for a while (at least for me) and try and forget about it a little, so that hopefully if Ep3 is good it will excite me and make the saga feel new again.

But don't worry I'm not planning to abandon OT.com any time soon.

I can agree with this statement. I really never thought that this topic would be so polarized. I was always of the opinion that all fans would want the original if for no other reason than to be able to compare it to the SE. But there actually seems to be more that either don't want it or don't give a rat's ass. It gets a bit disgusting to see how ignorant some people can be about film history and how ignorant they can be about having both versions being made available. Hey, if they don't want it, don't buy it. It's what I'm doing with these DVDs come September.

If you want evidence of how much SW has started to bring out the worst in people, head over to hometheaterforum.com. Some of the most vitriolic posts I've ever read.

Bill Hunt made some good statements. One about him being tired of fans. I agree he created the greatest movie ever made (Attack of the Clones) and got critized for it. Shameful I don't blame Lucas for being tired of fans.

COULD IT BE THAT WE'RE GETTING OLDER ??? THE OT WAS A CRUTIAL PART OF OUR COLLECTIVE CHILDHOODS, AND NOW WE'VE GROWN UP. WE STILL LOOK FOR THE MAGIC THAT WAS EVER PRESENT WHEN WE WATCHED THE OT, BUT THE "NEW" KIDS WATCHING THE SE CAN'T STAND TO WATCH THE OT IN ALL OF ITS MATTE LINED GLORY. WASN'T SW FOR KIDS ??? I STILL WANT TO BE LIKE PETER PAN AND NEVER GROW UP, BECAUSE IF I DO I MAY NEVER FIND THAT OT MAGIC AGAIN.

That reminds me...anyone notice how they sexed up Peter Pan?? It turned into sword fights & tight clothes on Tinkerbell (or whoever the fairy was.) That isn't peter pan, that is just lame. *Sorry to get off topic*

Bill Hunt also said we can expect additional changes to for this DVD. These will not be exactly like they were in 1997. That idea excites me. He also said he prefers the originals but doesn't mind the Special Editions. He also said that there will be Ultimate Editions. He says he has reliable industry sources. As far as I am concered thats all I need to consider it fact I have never known the bits to be that false.

The digital bits rumor mill is always based on industry sources not fan boys. The reason it is not always accrate is because the industry changes there minds. But it does show there are industry sources saying that there will be newer versions of the movies.

Yeah, its not like we're saying "NO Special editions! You must only have the originals!"

Its one thing if people don't want the originals, and prefer the SEs, thats fine. They don't have to buy them. But the fact that they don't want us to have them astounds me.

I 've never subscribed to this theory because I didn't get into SW until I was like 14 or 15. Plus i like TPM and I saw that when I was 20.

ANd I use to like ROTJ more then ANH but now I can see the faults of ROTJ and the brilliance of ANH as my taste have matured.

My dad is a good example as well because he loves the OT and he was 27 when ANH came out.

Most importantly though, as my knowledge of filmmaking has expanded, I can see that ANH and ESB are just really really well crafted films, told with tight pacing and solid filmmaking bravado. The reason I don;t like AOTC is because I consider the writing, and editing to be shabby. I think production values aside its one of the most problematic films I've ever seen, rife with errors left right and center.

Maybe If I was a kid I would like them all equally, but I'm not, and kids like teletubies so who cares what they think.

i think the Star Wars films are like fine wines... they only get better with age...
lol

i think if anything i will appreciate Episode II better once i see the final installment... but as ive said many times.. Episode I is a lost cause... that movie will never be Star Wars to me...

I feel the opposite. TPM just gets better and better and AotC gets worse and worse. AotC was the straw that broke the camels back for me, its what effectively ruined SW for me.

I can't really place my finger on what ruined SW for me. But I do agree that it has lost its level of fanaticism in my mind these last few years. I have come to appreciate ANH and ESB more as I get older and ROTJ less. I'm still the reverse on the PT movies from Rebel. I still like AOTC better than TPM. But I still have to see TPM again.

It's weird how things change when you grow up. When you're a kid, you swear that nothing could ever be better than the OT. They were my favorite movies of all time. But as I grew up, other movies start to encroach on what was once unattainable status. Now, ESB is the only SW film still in my top 20 films of all time. And even that is not in the #1 spot (Shawshank Redemption is).

I guess this could change once I have kids and expose them to SW. Hoping that they enjoy it as much as I did.

I'm looking forward to a time when my kids get to be surprised as to who darth vader really is. a surprise I never got to enjoy since I saw ROTJ first.

Yeah, but I'm wondering how big a surprise it will truly be. In this day and age of information proliferation, it's hard to keep something like that a secret. Unless you plan on keeping your kids under a rock until the moment arrives.

Bill Hunt was happy to sign on with the petition when he realized what it could do for his site. Once the big push was over, they dropped us like a hot potato. Now he says petitions are worthless, and the SEs are bearable. Anyone remember his childish ranting and raving at the start of the petition? He sounded like a zealot.

Then there's hometheaterforum.com. I started the original petition on petitiononline.com, and Ron Epstein actually posted in his own forum encouraging people NOT to sign it because it didn't look "professional"--too many negative comments. That's when I offered to build this site. They gave up on us eventually also. If you look at the humongous Star Wars topics there, you'll see one of the biggest collection of bitter idiots you're likely to encounter online.

TheForce.net didn't want anything to do with us unless I hosted the petition on their site. I won't post the text of the ridiculous e-mail I received from their administrators trying to convince me to host it with them. After I gracefully declined, I heard nothing from them.

Unlike all these sites, originaltrilogy.com is not funded by advertising. I built it myself, I pay for the hosting costs. I have no agenda other than that listed on the home page--the release of the theatrical cuts on DVD. That's where my goals end. Aside from a mention on my resume, I get no returns on my investment.

The Star Wars web community has become overrun with sellouts who are more interested in increasing exposure to their sites than they are in reporting news and remaining relevant. There are very few genuine film fans remaining among Star Wars fans; fanboys are in charge now.

Most will take the SEs and run. Know what? Fuck'em. They can choke on it.

If you predict once a year every year that Star Wars is coming out on DVD, at some point, you'll be right. When people discuss the genious of the Digital Bits for "predicting" the release of the Indy trilogy, they should be punched. Hard.

I stopped posting in the DVD forum there for that very reason. Some really maladjusted individuals there. I still browse on occasion, but I mostly stick to the various hardware forums.

I DON'T THINK THAT A LOT OF THE NEW POSTERS TO THIS SITE REALLY KNOW WHAT JAY HAS DONE HERE. LOOK AT SW.COM FOR INSTANCE. IN ORDER TO GET THE "REAL" SW NEWS YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. TFN IS RUN BY A BUNCH OF FANBOYS WHO DON'T EVEN HAVE TO DROP A DIME ON THE COSTS OF THEIR SITE BECAUSE OF ALL THE ADVERTISING ON THEIR SITE. JAY PAYS FOR THIS SITE OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET BECAUSE HE BELIEVES IN HIS PETITION AS DO MOST OF US HERE. I SAY "MOST" BECAUSE THERE HAVE BEEN POSTERS ON HERE WHO FIND IT NECESSARY TO CALL US FOOLS FOR BELIEVING THAT CHANGE CAN BE BROUGHT ABOUT THROUGH THE PETITION. ONE MAN CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND THAT MAN IS JAY.
