Star Wars Saga: Silent Film Edition (Released) — Page 3

The movie clip above (I've just added the link - check it out) was made using the filter from negative1's post.

The photo I posted in my first post (noone noticed it?) was altered with some demo version of a Photoshop plugin.

The movie clip I made 6 (or so) years ago was made using some old filter for Adobe Premiere (quicktime something?, I can't remember now, and I seem to have lost the old files). It was posted here, but the posts from 2003 are gone.

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

nice job..

although there are too many vertical lines images going on, everything else is ok,

but that.. also if you added a distorted low resolution music to it, it would be neat..

Yes, nice clip RRS-1980!

If an "old movie" filter exist on Premiere, I'll try to find it.

If you really want the old look use a Pan-Scan version

i don't think they had pan and scan back then..

maybe a square 4:3 fullscreen resolution, i know they

didn't have widescreen 16:9 resolution for quite some time..

That's why I said pan/scan though.  That'll net you 4:3.

Molly is right: widescreen was rarely used before WW2 (few flicks 1929-32) and really showed up as late as in 1953.

-1, you've posted a screenshot of the option window for the filter - the amount of f/x can be adjusted.

I just run it for test purposes, without working much on it ;)

Right, if I ever make a "dusty version" of my edit, I'll try to not put too much of these "big noise white shapes", because they are too caracteristic, they kind of screams "I'm a filter!". But without them and with not too much vertical lines (and maybe with a little photo grain added to the picture) it could works well on a full lenght movie without being boring or irritating.

As for the 4:3 resolution, I did not think about that; I guess it deserves a try, but I don't know... (not to say I would have to redo all my texts cards! NooOOoo, please don't let this appends!)

if you were to use something like vitrtualdub you could do all your editing and then run it through an 'old film' filter at the very end. If you keep the dust and scrathes subtle enough it could look quite good.

oh, and circa 4x3 ration - I'd say it'd be worth checking out. Not fully up to speed yet though.

the cards could be resized, and you could also make the text bigger and easier to read..

you will have to use the fullscreen versions of all the videos.... because if you try to make your

own, it might not look right..

Well if you'd be interested TMBTM, I'd be willing to lend a hand for things like this and I'm sure that others may well be. Might i also suggest adding the name of the person speaking to cards? - you could do the names in grey and the dialogue in white.

That might be handy for scenes like the end of TPM where yoda and mace both speak quickly and you cut to a dialogue card showing Mace's dialogue before we've even seen his mouth move...it could be assumed that all dialogue shown could be attributed to the one character, Yoda.

even cropping the video to a full frame 16:9 ratio may help give it an 'old' style.

I though about that before doing the cards, but my biggest fear was the viewer not having time enough to read the entire card. AND sometimes we don't know the name of a character before a certain time. So adding the name before it appears in the dialogues could be confusing maybe.

the cards could be resized, and you could also make the text bigger and easier to read..

I made the texts not so big because I thought it was quicker to read, but perhaps I was wrong..

you will have to use the fullscreen versions of all the videos.... because if you try to make your

own, it might not look right..

I understand, but I had to cut each movie in 4 or 5 parts in order to make them easier to play and cut in premiere pro on my PC. So if I redo the edit with others sources I'll need to cut each parts on the exact frame so they will play well on my premiere edit... and I think the only released fullscreen DVD of these movies are the OT original versions (that will not fit in my edit because mine are the 2004 DVD SE versions) am I right?

My seed will be back in 3 hours...

And I'll definitely do an "old picture" version of this edit. I think I'll use a mix between 4 or 5 premiere pro filters and an alpha layer done with the old cinema filter for virtual dub (link given by negative 1 on this topic.). I will not use picture flickering and the filter will be apply on all frames, because the 1/2 frames thing is cool on a 30 seconds clip (it indeed gives an old feeling), but I think it would not works great on a 2 hours lenght (your thoughts about that?)

So, Ripplin, if you feel that some text faults still needs to be changed, you can send them to me. :)

that sounds really cool..

i agree, don't 'overdo' the old film effect.... even films in bad shape usually have some good parts,

without the flicker etc..... just use a consistent look for the whole film, and it should turn out great..

sounds exciting..

Some work in progress "old style" pictures:

Maybe you'll find these pictures still too clean but when they moves, the grain animation shows a lot more and there is a little "vibration" of the brightness that gives a nice old feeling.

It's difficult to do, because, the new "old picture" version needs to be quite different from the first. But in the meantime it must still be watchable, and not just fun 5 minutes before getting boring. But I'm kind of pleased with this first try.

Well, I downloaded (and am seeding) the divx version of the "clean" cut, but I think I'm far more interested in the grainy, dirty version... Looks fun for a movie night!

Well, I downloaded (and am seeding) the divx version of the "clean" cut, but I think I'm far more interested in the grainy, dirty version...

Thanks for the interest.

I think the dirty version would only be interesting with a correct DVD quality, because a compressed divx + grainy and dirty filters... it should be a mess!

I think it will take time to do all 6 episodes of the dirty version.

First I need to correct some faults on the cards (as well as one or two rough audio cuts maybe), then I need to place the filters, and they takes a long time to render when I compile the final video.

And I still want to do some little more tests. I think this videos are a bit too bright compare to the pictures. Just a bit.

And I'm making my french cards, too.

As for the sound issue...  I don't think that an "old" sound should runs all along the movie. Sometimes it's a pleasure for the eyes to see dirty things (...) but when it comes to the hears it is usualy irritating!

Maybe at some points in the movie, when scenes themselves have an old feeling (romantic music, cantina music). But I still have to search, and find, a good filter for that.
