I've been watching the first disc (to me the most guilty of having far too much CG work in it) and thankfully, turning the movies to black and white has actually taken a lot of the cartoonish nature away from the work. It seems to work really well especially now the clunky dialogue has been taken out of the equation too. Now only the music is there to set the mood and this shows John Williams off to his best.
There's something about the quality of the CG work in black and white that makes it less jarring than when it's in those awful OTT computer palettes...
