Star Wars The 30’s Serial Edition

Part 1: episode 1-2-3

Part 2: episode 4-5-6

Hi, it’s my first post here. I’ve made something that you might be interested in.

It’s a 4h40 long silent Star Wars movie (only Williams score, no voices, no sound effects), black and white, with dialogues cards.
Maybe I should have called this “20’s serial edition”, cause the 30’s were the great debut of sound and color,
I thought 30’s sounds better… anyway…

PM me if you want rapidshare links for DVD part1 and2 (around 40 ziped files for each part)

Quality has been hugely improved, compared to the first part DVD released last month on faneditforum.org
(few cuts were also made here and there)
and, thanks to Ripplin: no more bad french/english translations and horrible grammatical faults in the text cards.
I think you can now watch this without laughing about my poor english (I’m french).
Each episodes are now chapitred.

Even if there are more than 8 hours cutted out of the originals, it’s the same story but tell in a different and very shorter way.
My goal is to give the same old movie feeling to the whole saga that can now be watched as one big movie.
You’ll find some PT score in OT, and some OT score in PT.

I can’t detail all the cuts, but you don’t have to care if Han shoots first or not anymore:
he does not meet Greedo at all.
There is no opening crawl on part2 cause it’s all one movie and so the crawl is on part1.
But before each episode (that can be watched separatly by the main menu) there is a “Ten years later” type of card,
then a text explaining the events between the episodes (some of these texts are from the original movies text crawls).

No Obi/Ani/Dooku/Yoda fight in EP2.
No Yoda/Sidious fight in EP3. I like this fight, but I needed to cut it (time issue)
The only moment Yoda is holding a saber is at the end of order 66.

The only thing that really bother me is that this edit don’t show Vader killing any imps officers.
(I always liked to see the ultimate bad guy killing more imperials than rebels in the OT!
There’s really “still good in him” I suppose!)

I had a very hard time working on the music synch.
I did my best even if some transitions are still a bit rushed. I don’t think I can improve it a lot more.

This edit is something I needed to do.
Like… I don’t know, saying goodbye to a world that I really like but that I somehow need to leave.
I don’t say that I’m done with Star Wars, I’m a huge fan and I still have some hope for the live tv-series.
But I had to do this edit first to have a completely free mind on other projects.

Enjoy!

LOVELY!

weve been having a silent film series at our university with live pianists, which made me think of having a similar thing for star wars!

looking forward to seeing it!

I know I thought about the possibility of a silent version of Star Wars before I knew of this project, so I was excited to see this one!

I'm up to 15.8% complete. Thanks for continued seeding, TMBTM. (I always have to check what your username is, cuz I know the real one so much better. Haha.)

I hope that I shall not disappoint you with this edit Ripplin.

The result is very closed to what I have in mind when I started this project.

Thanks for the interest ben_danger and -1.

Colour me interested. This is something I'd thought about before. I'll definitely check this out and get back to you.

EDIT:

Any chance of a more compressed version? - it would take me quite a while to download 7+GB. Especially just to 'check something out'...I don't mean to sound demanding or anything, Just the way things are.

I will see if I could do DivX versions this week end.

The one time i know of that star wars has been released in Black and White and Silent with Subtitles is the Ken films release.

That being said I was looking forward to the 30's and 40's era serial Edition as i am a fan of the Flash Gordon serials with Buster Crabbe.

Silent film edition is a nice concept as well but i first came into this thread thinking you had done the same thing that person on youtube did with Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The prequels being Silent does that make them any better.  Did you fix the awful Lucas dialogue between padme and anakin ? Just taking out Hayden whining voice is a real plus, did you take out Jar Jar?  Did you fix his dumb ebonic speak like phantom editor did?

To be fair lately i have Found Mark Hamill's whining Voice in the originals Grating on my nerves, but not like getting a root canal like Hayden Christensen's voice.

It would be cool To make a Noir ish detective story out of Episodes II subplot with Obi searching for Kamino, too bad most of the footage was never shot or finished. If Lucas played up that old hard boiled detective story angle it would have been cool.  I know he is a fan of The Maltese Falcon.

Is the Silent  film edit cut like Metropolis by Fritz Lang?  I have always thought it would be a cool edit to do of star wars 1977 to edit it in black and white and Call it "the metropolis edit".  Sadly i am no fan editor to i leave that up to those with the skills, lol.

From what I have heard the rough cut of star wars by John Jympson almost come off as a flash gordon serial with the sillyness of the film Help! thrown in for good measure.

The deleted Cantina rough footage for instance on the Behind The Magic CD-Rom is very much like Flash Gordon, though Kenobi cutting the dude down in the bar fight is from either Yojimbo or Sanjiro a Kurosawa film.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

That's why I suggested to him that the thread title should be changed to Silent Film Edition to try and make what it is clearer. To be perfectly honest, I was thinking of the Raiders edit when I saw that this was a "serial," too. (which I have, but haven't watched yet)

LOL, I like that idea... especially because I did a small clip this way a few years ago (the Death Star chasm jump scene) and even posted it on this forum (but I'll bet the original message got deleted - it had to be at least 5 years old IIRC).

BTW: other people also mentioned B&W Star Wars:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/WWII-style-edit-of-ANH-I-need-a-title-for-this/post/147809/#post147809

Could you post some screenshots? I'd like to check it out before I start downloading 7GB... I don't live in Sweden, ya know ;)

I like old movies, LOL

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

ok,

i have the first part, still watching it...

===============================

1 great job on synchronizing the sound to the action ,.... very good!

2 nice job on cutting out all the extra dialogue..

3 i wish the text was bigger, and not as blocky...

4 also, i know the stories, but it can get confusing when more than

one person is having a dialogue, and you don't know who said what..

i'm watching parts of the second half..

i wish there was a scroll for this one..

another thing, why didn't you use some 'old movie' filters for it,

scratches, grain, dirt, and noise???????????????

the quality of the video is too good to look like a 'serial'...

also, some of the black+white scenes, especially with vader/leia/stormtroopers

almost looked the same as the color !!!!

Have to be careful with that. If not done right, it can stand out more than the movie quality itself.

Thanks for the quick review, the screenshots and making DivX negative 1!

I'll try to do DivX for both episode this week end.

also, i know the stories, but it can get confusing when more than

one person is having a dialogue, and you don't know who said what..

Yes, it was quite difficult to do... I tried to make it as clear as I can. I sometimes even added the name of a character inside the setences (so we understand it is not him who speaks!).

Did you fix the awful Lucas dialogue between padme and anakin ?

Yes.

did you take out Jar Jar?

He don't speak "Gungan" anymore, he actualy help Qui-Gonn and the queen.

And he's not the clumsy clown fo the story anymore. But my Goal was to stay as close as I can of the story.

So Jar Jar is still here, but not that much.

another thing, why didn't you use some 'old movie' filters for it,

scratches, grain, dirt, and noise???????????????

Off course I thought about that... but I did not really  feel the need.

It's my first fan edit and I wanted to make it nice looking first. Like a modern silent movie.

And frankly I did not not found good filters to do the thing!

I don't want to sound overly critical of something I haven't actually seen yet, but going by the posted images I would suggest increasing the contrast a little and make adjustments to brightness to help things stand out / stand a part a little better...a lot of the scenes in general look a tad on the dark side and fairly grey.

In the posted shot of Obiwan [TPM] his face appears very dark and without colour information, slightly hard to make out. I'm sure it probably is easier on the eyes in motion though...

Also i'd think that using the title '30's serial edition' within the actual film itself kind of breaks the fourth wall a little.

The text cards do look a bit on the plain side, I'd expect them to be a little more fancy, Otherwise there doesn't really seem much reason to use those as oposed to simple subtitles. Maybe you could add something like imperial and rebel [or whatever era...] emblems in oposing corners?

And maybe make the text a bit larger since you have almost the entire screen to use. I do like the 'star wars' borders.

I AM still planning to check this out as I think it's a very interesting idea.

You are right about that, once compiled by DVD lab pro the picture looked more contrasted in the final result than in my original .mp2, I still don't know why. But I found that not bad at all. And I felt it was good for the mood of this version.

My divX version will have the original brightness though.

i don't know if you have tried avisynth,

but there are some free filters here..

http://compression.ru/video/

the one for making an 'old' movie is

old cinema:

This filter is intended to achieve an "Old cinema" effect. You can vary color correction algorithm and add various artifacts, so video looks like "chronicle".

  • Several color correction types
  • Vertical Stripes
  • Small and large noise
  • Emulsion exfolication effect
  •

    http://compression.ru/video/old_cinema/index_en.html

     here are the multiple options:

Thanks for all -1! I'll try this filter one of these days.

For now I'm happy with the clean version, but sure it'll be fun trying to do an old noisy one.

(And this filter will help me for the "Grinhouse Jaws" edit I'm planing to do!)
