The funny thing about the 04 DVDs is that if you didn't read about them on the internet, or hear about the changes by word of mouth, just walked in the store saw them there and thought, "Hey, Star Wars is on DVD! I loved those movies when I was a kid, I ought to buy them for my kids for Christmas." When you watched them you'd be like, "What the hell?" Even if you were expecting them to be the 1997 films you would not be getting what you expected. You be getting three versions of the films you had never seen before. What other DVD set has ever done that to us before without so much as a warning in the form of the words "Special Edition" or "Director's Cut"? I cannot think of any.
Another thing that makes me surprised so many people are head-over-heels, paint me pink and slap me silly, what more could you possibly ask for, happy with the OT DVD release is its complete and utter lack of any special features whatsoever. No matter how you spin it, it is an incredibly bare bones set. I didn't realize that until just this week, when I finally broke down and bought the GOUT set (used, $3 bucks a piece, figured I might as well add them to my collection of nonanamorphic DVDs which consisted of the Planet of the Apes boxset and Monty Phython and the Holy Grail, both of which were released in the days when nonanamorphic was standard and both of which have had superior anamorphic transfers since then). Most bare bones discs at least come with a trailer or something to give people something else to click on after they watch the movie. These things literally only have the movie, scene selection setup, and a link to StarWars.com for some gay reason. First time I have seen an internet link on a DVD, brilliant stuff. Guess they wanted to make it look like it had more features than it does.
My GOUT set came with the 04 discs, and I am still trying to decide what to do with them. Maybe I will sell them on ebay, if I can make $9 off of them I will break even and my GOUTs will have cost me nothing. Not sure if I should sell the cases with them or not, the cases are seriously ugly, I could print off much nicer ones, but the ones I print off never quite look the quality of the original covers.
