TV SET-UP AND DVDs: for the best picture on your TV.

Two weeks ago I changed the color setting on my TV to make the picture look like it did in the 70's/80's (tone down colors, less black levels and so on). I hate the setting of DVD and HD with the blasting colors and too dark black levels, too much reds and yellows and so on. The 70's/80's setting made dvd watching better.

Then I got the Indy 4 DVD and decided to use the normal TV setting and not The 70's and 80's setting. The film had super blasting colors and blinding blasted whites levels. I switch to my 70's/80's setting and It was great. It looked like an old Indy film. I do not know why film-makers today think super blasting colors and blinding blasted whites levels are so great.

The 70's and 80's setting in the best thing for watching DVDs.

Step 1: Try to remember how films color setting looked in 70's/80's or watch an VHS tape of an old 70's/80's movie with "outside sunny scenes".

Step 2: Put in a dvd of a movie from the 70's/80's and set the color settings to match. (tone down colors, less black levels and so on).

Tip: Make flesh tones look real flesh tones. (A lot of DVDs have too much red.)

Go try it and have fun.

One: Indy 4 will never be nominated for Best Picture

Two:  The best setting for your TV regarding Indy 4 is 'off'.

I did NOT write this topic about a 70's/80's just For Indy 4.
I work in Media and have studied Digital and Video all my life.
This set up works for all DVDs and HD.

Yes, DVDs and HD have a great clearer picture then video, but you also lose more things with DVDs and HD, then with Video.

DVDs and HD is killing visual media just look at most DVDs or HD:
Blast out Colors,
Too Deep Blacks,
Skin tones are not natural,
and sharpness levels too high.

Look at The Raiders of the Lost Ark DVD.
If you think this DVD is how Raiders of the Lost Ark looked in The movie houses in the 1980's...you are wrong. Yes the film clean up is good and the clearer picture is good, but the color levels are bad like most films of today. One thing is the blasting yellows, reds and Too Deep Blacks level. Raiders of the Lost Ark was not made to look like this. Most older films are mess-up by DVDs' and HD's  bad color levels.

It is all related to that wet soapy look of Windows XP. People like bright and shiny things at present. I believe it is just a trend. Unfortunately, even old movies like Star Wars that are being put on DVD are being forced to follow this trend, and after the trend is over, there will be no evidence left of previous trends.

Hunter 6, I totally agree with you about the new 'look' of DVD and BluRay movies.

The faces are too red, and the colors are too bright on most DVD's.   I can't remember what movies looked like in the 70's/early 80's because I was too young, but I am very torn on the look of these movies.

I have an RCA HDTV and was wondering how you guys would you adjust your settings for the GOUT?

Black Level?

Color?

Contrast?

Sharpness?

Color Warmth?
