Info Wanted: attempts to fix yoda in the prequels

Has anyone with FX capabilities attempted in an edit to rotoscope puppet facial features to cg yoda? I’ve making quick mockups in photoshop to explain what I mean:

I heard something about SOTDS having a more puppety Yoda, is this true?

But that goes beyond older and younger.  His whole face is different.

Younger and older is a relative term with Yoda.  The best lifespan of a human is pushing 90.  Yoda is upwards of 900 in ROTJ ("When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not."), which means that "Yoda years" is kind of like "dog years" - 1 human year=10 Yoda years.

Assuming he's exactly 900 in ROTJ, his equivalent human age is 90 at that point.  That makes him somewhere in the 850 to 880 range over the course of the PT, which puts his equivalent human age at 85 to 88.  Can you really tell the difference between an 85 year old man, an 88 year old man and a 90 year old man?

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

There's nothing to say that others of his kind don't live much longer.

"Sick have I become, old and weak"

as Sluggo mention the Ot and PT yodas just don't look like the same guy.

You might get away with just trying to make the eyes more OT like...

More like 120.

Point is, there's somewhere around a 10-1 ratio between Yoda's age and human age, which means that visual changes in that age would be similarly proportional, so my analogy stands.

Yeah, its just a mockup. I basically plastered the puppet face on cg Yoda and darkened, desaturated and added grain to the scene to make it look more realistic. Anyway, people like Adywan have really worked magic, especially with his cg morphing on the alien faces in the cantina. If someone like him could rotoscope video of Yoda from ESB and ROTJ onto prequel Yoda's face seamlessly and use that CG style "morphing" to align his facial and mouth movements correctly it would be really cool. A lot of work, but really cool. I'll make more mockups.

This pic was a lot harder. The feasibility of doing this on a real video is looking slim to none. ESB Yoda angry looks kinds weird.

Just realized the problem. His eye is completely out of place

EDIT: Fixed...to an extent....

And you know how painful that can be. These are an interesting look at how things might/should have been.

I'd be more interested in seeing emotes done to Yoda's face in ESB and ROTJ. It would make more since if you're trying blend the OT and PT to look more like each other. That's what I thought Adywan was trying to do anyway.

The AOTC and ROTS yoda's were acceptable. It's the one from TPM that needs some serious work. Should anyone plan on rotoscoping a more familiar yoda into the prequels, than for the love of the little green dude, please start with TPM :-)

Wow...that's kind of cool!

I don't know if there's any sort of plug in with after effects that could basically paste one face on top of another...but someone should look into it!

There are several thing about the PT Yoda that bug me...

-Simply doesn't look like it's in its actual space. Don't really know how else to explain it...part of it has to do with artificial CG lighting...

-While most of the animation is up to par with anything else you might see these days, it's not anywhere near what Oz did with the puppet! Yeah, yeah, the ears jiggle...but that's not enough!

Example: Yoda looks towards screen right. With a puppet, Oz had limited eye movment so that meant he had to also move the head and the entire body to look to the right...which meant there had to be slighty different staging for the scene...which means slighty different lighting...and so on. Everything adds up to an entirely different performance. If all you have to do to look towards screen right is move the mouse cursor a certain direction, you'll get a different performance.

-The voice. When Oz was simpy having to read a few lines into a mic and NOT be there on set and get his hands into the character of Yoda....well the voice acting did suffer. AND the actors suffered as well since all they had was someone reading lines off stage. They had noone to interact with.

OK, sorry. Done for now! ;)

Yes, Trooperman was going to something like that to yoda more or less, he will lower the frame rate in yoda scenes to make him seem more puppet like!

The person your searching for simply does not exist

Not sure how making his movement even less fluid would make him more puppet-like.

Well, whenever the movie gets done (Cries silently) we'll see.

Here's something that Johnny Ringo suggested, just editing the more static eyes and nose area of Yoda's face. This way, nobody has to tamper with mouth movement or anything else tricky. Adywan is already doing something like this with the Emperor Hologram in ESB. I think this still looks amazingly better. Of course, the mandatory grain, darkening and desaturation...

Indeed.  But who's up to the challenge of fixing the whole movie?
