I wonder if there's any way to get an honest answer as to whether it was something to do with Lowry restoration algorithms running rampant, or LFL trying to 'modernise' the look but doing it half-assed.
Don't waste your time. If they can't come clean about the audio issues ("deliberate creative decision"), they won't address the real color issues. Any answer you get will be BS. But I do recall reading somewhere recently that Lowry only handled grain reduction and image cleaning, not coloration.
There is a small part of me that has wondered if the darkening was done to compensate for the overly-bright settings most people use on their TVs. Not that that's acceptable, but at least it's a plausible reason.
I remember a time when I used to have the utmost respect for George Lucas. Sad.
