Why was the '04 DVD set such a botched release? — Page 5

The way I see it, LFL just doesn't have the manpower or the resources to give these movies the time and love they deserve. LFL is an independent company, so unlike major studios that release hundreds of titles on DVD each year and have the whole thing down pat, I get the feeling that LFL is always scrambling to get a release out. They might have one or two guys sitting standing by at a computer to do whatever change Lucas thinks up on a whim,...

I don't know... have you ever been to Lucas ranch or Skywalker Sound?  I have (twice, for audio postproduction projects).  It is an awesome facility in every respect, and very well staffed.  I don't think lack of resources or capability is the issue.  The issue is that restoration is not a part of Lucas' very successful business plan, so there is no fiscal reason to do it.  Lucas' business is making new stuff for kids.  Period.  I'm still amazed we even got the GOUT.

GL's net worth is over 3.5 billion dollars! I think he could splurge on a restoration which would cost at most what 20-30 million.  Even so, Robert A Harris has publicly stated he would work on the Star Wars for free if given the opportunity.  He was the restorationist behind Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, Vertigo, Rear Window, and most recently the Godfather.  There is zero reason why it cannot be done except for GL's ego.

Has anyone contacted LFL personally or even better yet, George Lucas about the whole coving up the OT and the errors in the '04 DVDs? Its sounds like a few have. Is there an email that gets me to speak directly to LFL and George Lucas?

No, but Lucasfilm's PR department will be happy to send you back a patronizing form letter and feed you BS about how it just isn't possible to do a decent restoration of the theatrical version of one of the all-time greats in film history, all the while skirting the issue of what went wrong with the SE restorations and trying to sound like they actually care what you think.

What really pisses me off is that Lucasfilm claim that they can't do a restoration of the theatrical version because the Oneg was cut up to make the special editions but then admit that they had to use some shots from a film print for the SE because the neg was too badly damaged. So why can't they just use a film print to restore the changed scenes? All we're being fed from them is total bullshit time and time again and when you get idiots saying that we should be happy with the horrific 2004 transfer of the SE then i just want to scream.

If we do ever get a bluray release of the trilogy i think it will only be the 2004 transfer with the messed up soundtrack and colours. i can't see Lucasfilm going back and fixing the transfer at all. Lucasfilm couldn't care less about what the fans want anymore as long as they're making money off us.

adywan I am feel your frustration but to call me and other people that are star wars fans idiots that's not right. And by you saying lucasfilm does'nt care about the fans that's wrong if they did'nt care we whould not have the star wars films on dvd to begin with.  But you don't care if lucasfilm puts the films on blu-ray becuse people like you like to bash Lucas and pick on the guy. That's class-less in my opinion.

You think LFL released the 04 DVD's becaused they "cared" about anybody? LMAO It wasn't a warm fuzzy feeling for the public that convienced Lucas to put Star Wars on DVD....it was the MONEY.

If they really cared that much they would have gone through the DVD masters before releasing them to make sure things like the picture and sound were up to par. After all, the picture and sound is really about all there is to a DVD. And we'd also have a thoroughly cleaned, restored, and anamorphic GOUT. It really seems like they put as little effort as possible into the DVD releases.

The menus look great though, I'll give them that.

ok guys, what does GOUT stand for?

"GOUT" is the term created for the DVDs that were released in Sept. '06 (which are the original theatrical versions in non-anamorphic form). They are also being re-released in a boxed set this November.

"OOT" (original-original-trilogy) and "OUT" (original-unaltered-trilogy) are more general terms that refer to the films as they existed prior to 1997.

Here's a handy guide that explains all the acronyms used on this site:

Lucas is currently worth (literally) 4 Billion dollars. It's more classless to sell a dvd with FAR less effort put into it than a season of Love Boat.

Thanks guys, I knew GOUT was the original versions of the films. I just couldn't think of what it stood for.

And now I know, and knowing is half the battle ;o)

And of course, the other half of the battle is VIOLENCE!

As Mielr pointed out, GOUT is not the original versions, but specifically refers to the crappy official LD transfers that were included as bonus disc in the 2006 rererelease (hence the "George's", since they are the versions he released). Any other version of the original pre-1997 trilogy should be refered to as the OUT or OOT.
