Can't import MPG with Vegas?

EDIT: actually, I got the video in vegas, but it plays too fast and it's off sync with the audio obviously...

I can usually import mpg videos in Vegas, but when I try to import the mpg file of the movie (done with Womble), it says it can't open it.  Am I missing something?

Check the framerate of the MPEG (Click on it in Project media, and look at the description at the bottom of the window. Adjust the Project Properties to the same framerate and see if that helps.

Otherwise, render it to an AVI in VirtualDubMod, and then import into Vegas. You can import MPEGs, but sometimes they play wonky.

All right, I'll try to re-encode it as an AVI, I hope it works. Thanks!

Well, it didn't work: I tried to re-encode the M2V file to an AVI with VirtualDub, but 3 hours and 100 GB later, the picture of the new AVI is all jerky and squished....What is going on?

What happens when you play the AVI by itself? Is it squished in Media Player as well as in Vegas?

Which way is it squished? It could simply be that you made a non-anamorphic video from an anamorphic DVD.

If you can get the AVI into Vegas, you can adjust the height and width until the video has the appropriate ratio.

Yes, the picture is squeezed vertically when I watch it in Windows Media Player. The original movie was letterboxed, not anamorphic, so I guess that's why it's deformed the way it is.

But I don't get why the picture is jerky like it is. Could someone maybe take me through the process of converting the M2v (or mpg) for optimum results?

Is the playback jerky in Windows Media player, or in Vegas?

Also, have you tried changing the framerate settings?

The playback is jerky in both Windows Media Player and Vegas and no, I haven't tried changing any settings yet.

If I understood your suggestion correctly, I applied the filter "swap fields" in VirtualDub, but the resulting picture was very blocky...

Finally, I re did every step of the inverse telecine process and converted a 10 second preview of the AVI. The speed seemed fine in both WMP and Vegas. I'll try to convert the whole movie again and upload it in Vegas, maybe it will (inexplicably) work this time.

Also, is it normal that I notice a slight drop in sharpness after the inverse telecine process?

No, not if it was originally progressive (shot on film, not video), and wasn't messed up during pulldown.

Hm, it's a bit difficult to tell what could be going wrong for you, maybe you could upload a small clip of the raw mpg somewhere?

I followed all the steps from ADigitalMan's guide except the part where it shows how to crop a letterboxed video: I don't want to to that just yet.

Now, the small preview clip I did seems inexplicably fine: the aspect ratio is okay, it plays well in both WMP and Vegas, but the image has a slight blur which occured after the inverse telecine process I think.  Basically, the screenshot is very representative of the clip: perfect except the blur.

Here is the avs, don't know if it will help.

Well...
You say it's fine now, does that mean the jerkiness went away? It could have been caused by wrong ivtc settings.

Do you want to be resizing? You are using LanczosResize(640,352) (making the frame smaller). If you are first making it smaller and then resizing back to dvd resolution in vegas that could of course cause some loss of detail. Comment out the line if you don't want that.

I feel I don't really have enough information to help you properly - you also mention aspect ratio; you don't need to correct the aspect ratio if you're making a dvd for example, your project should simply be in 720x480 for ntsc.

Well, thanks for helping me out but I'm about to give up: when I load the inverse telecined file in VirtualDub (the same file I used to make the preview, which looked FINE!) to make an AVI, it now shows scan lines again, for no !@$% reason!

So unless there is another completely different way of getting a lossless video file on Vegas that you're willing to share, I'm thiiiis close to giving up...

I deleted everything and I am starting out from scratch with ADM's guide again. Apparently, the step of inverse telecine is where the quality loss happens, so I will stop there. I won't try to convert it to AVI until this issue is solved and I'll get back to you with preview clips.

Is this the H20 ntsc dvd?

I had a quick look at it, didn't find any problems.

Ripped vobs, ran dgindex.exe. Used this avisynth script:

LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\dgdecode.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\tcomb.dll")
Mpeg2Source("S:\temp\h20\h20.d2v")
Telecide()
Decimate(5)
crop(0,100,0,-102,align=true)
#correct aspect ratio for 1:1 pixel ratio displays (like pc monitors)
#Lanczos4Resize(720, 306)
#OR
#resize to anamorphic
#Lanczos4Resize(720, 360).Addborders(0,60,0,60)

Use the crop and/or resizer (one of them) if you want, hope I calculated correctly :)

Edit - Note:

If you want the highest possible quality ntsc anamorphic dvd you might try obtaining a pal version of the movie - this will have higher vertical resolution (unless they really messed up and upconverted from ntsc...).
