60" Pioneer Elite KURO plasma.

Oh I have all of those. I was referring to fanedits. Those are more "extras" to me.
digitalfreaknyc said:Again, let's investigate how all of you are watching these things. Are you watching them on 42" screens? I hate to say it but there's not a single person on here that i'd trust to do an accurate review of any of these. Send them to the professional reviewers with 100"+ screens and then you'll see all the problems with the original mpeg-2 files.
I gotta agree with this 100%. Ady's current releases look absolutely stunning on a small screen (20" widescreen LCD) and I'm sure they look good on a 50" 1080i TV (my main TV) as well. Unfortunately, I'm no videophile. What looks good to me may look like utter crap to someone with an eye for quality.
I still can't wait to see the AVCHD releases he's working on. I doubt they'll look as good as something meant to fit on a full size Blu-ray disc though.
It's funny, because a lot of people automatically assume a DVD-9 just can't contain a high quality 1080p encode. It can, and I'm completely impressed with the quality of the AVCHD disks based off of Wookiegroomer's encodes. Will the Blu-Ray look better? Probably (If Lucas fixes the horrible color timing issues). I only have a 52-inch 720p DLP, though. Of course, some would consider that crap because "you can't get good quality unless you have at least 100 inches." I wonder if anyone with that mindset is ever trying to compensate for anything. I kid, I kid!
Getting off track...Ady, how's the progress going? I hope you still release at least Episode II and III, since Wookiegroomer's version has German subtitles in a few spots! Das is nein guten! Dying to see the color corrected Empire.
Funcha said:I only have a 52-inch 720p DLP, though. Of course, some would consider that crap because "you can't get good quality unless you have at least 100 inches."
Actually, they'd probably consider it crap because it's not 1080p, it's only 720p. It's a big enough screen, but 1080p would be so much better.
A 100" screen is probably not as uncommon as you might think. Considering all the costs involved, some have found it cheaper to get a projector and just put the image on a wall or pull down screen.
I checked out the sample projected in 1080p at about 12 feet diagonally and it looked fine.
There is indeed an improvement in the jump from 720p to 1080p but not as much as there is from 480p to 720p. There's the law of diminishing returns in effect from that point on and 720p is usually more than adequate, even at ridiculous sizes.
But, yes, back to the subject of this topic. I'm very eager for this project to come to fruition. Been waiting for those promised screenshots for a while now!
The Griff said:I'm very eager for this project to come to fruition. Been waiting for those promised screenshots for a while now!
yeh, sorry about that. there have been a few problems with the colour correction so i've held back with the screenshots until i've sorted it out
Absolutely no problem. Just as long as the final product is done to your satisfaction, I can wait.
One question, however:
You say you intend to provide EMPIRE with an optional alternate pre-Special Edition laserdisc audio track. How do you intend to sync it to the SE elements that you do not remove? Will you be substituting portions with the DVD audio? I assume the added shuttle sequence would require the most audio tomfoolery?
Comparison screenshots for Episode IV have now been added to the first page
Those look soooooo good. I can't wait to download these when they become available. Thanks again for all your efforts, Ady!!!
I found the complete 6 movies in AVCHD about a month ago on news groups. I think they are the wookiegroomer versions as TPM subs for Boss Nass are in German.
I'll definatly grab these too when they are availble. Keep up the good work

You've, again, proved my point exactly. You mention the color timing improving on the look of the eventual blu-rays. That isn't what we're talking about here. That's an artistic decision. *I* am talking about one of compression and detail which has nothing to do with color timing issues. The eventual blu-ray will absolutely positively DEFINITELY look better than anything put out on this board (save someone who has an original 35mm or 70mm print to work with). People, this is about detail. It's not about artistic decisions.
No, you don't have to have a 100" screen to see problems but they are much more obvious at that size.
Again, I want to get off of this subject because I certainly don't want Ady to think that i'm raining on his parade because I certainly am not. As I said previously, I absolutely LOVED the revisited version of Star Wars. I cannot remember the last time I actually sat through the entire movie and his version made me do it. He has brought back the magic of Star Wars imho.
dumb_kid said: Now on topic... Ady I know you may be doing minor tweaks to the movies themselves (Han shoots first , etc) Any chance you can just yank out "Jedi Rocks"? I know you can't put in Lapti Nek with the orginal puppets, but the new song and dance number is awful. Hell I wouldn't mind an abrupt "cut to next scene" over having to being yanked out the movie completly with the horrible CG critters.
LOL! I share your sentiment.
My suggestion would be to put Lapti Nek in using the GOUT- of course there would be an obvious drop in quality, (except for some cutaway shots that he could still use from the HD source) but that would still be better than leaving in 'Jedi Rocks' or cutting the scene out altogether. IMHO, anyway. ;-)

how hard is it for you guys to fast forward past the parts you don't like? is it really that hard?
or what about taking the final version, and editting it yourself? if you want the scene removed,
just go into your favorite editor, and take it out?
i think the minor changes are fine, but what you're asking for is major surgery on the movie,
compared to touch-ups.... i mean adywan is free to do what he wants...
but how come no one else wants to try to do it by themselves, instead of constantly asking?
[and being disappointed when the change isn't made]...

ha ha, thats very diplomatic of you..
you criticize the rest of us with smaller TV's as being blind to the differences, and not
caring about compression, and even when there are acceptable HD versions out....
and then you turn around and praise Adywan for not using a HD source, that uses MPG2
compression, which you hate....and you ignore your initial statement, to make it sound like you're not
criticizing the quality, but you like the content?
man, you can't have it both ways...

Is it not sad that in this time, we are more surprised by acts of love than acts of hate?

Relax, negative1.
I wasn't asking Adywan to do anything. Adywan has already expressed his own dislike for 'Jedi Rocks' and I was just echoing dumb_kid's likewise statements.
Ady has already said that he's removing Hayden Christiansen from the finale, so I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing other undesirable scenes.
Or, are we not allowed to do that here?
I'm only doing minor tweaks to these releases. Most of them will be closer to the theatrical SE releases than they appear now (apart from Han being the only one that shoots), so replacing the new with the old emperor and replacing Hayden. If i can get hold of the TPM laserdisc then i will be doing the theatrical version of TPM instead of the DVD version we have now. but removing things like Jedi Rocks i will leave to my Revisited edits
onto the debate about the size of tvs then i have to join in this
"Size matters not"... well a lot of times it doesn't. having a bigger screen doe not mean that the picture is better. in fact a larger screen could possibly introduce artefacts that aren't even there on the blu-ray/ AVCHD in the first place, and the same goes for smaller TV's. It all has to do with the quality of the panel (how much you paid for it or the manufacturer has nothing to do with it) many LCD's over 40" are using 8 or even 6 bit screens whereas other smaller ones are using 10 + bit. this does make a difference. colours just don't blend as well and even though you would be going through HDMi/digital connections the panel displays what looks like artefacts & fringing, that makes it look like compression problems, when in fact its not the case. if you have a 10+bit 32" LCD and a 60" 8 bit panel then the 32" is the one that would win every time as that is displaying closer to the original source than the 60" one. i never judge the quality of something just by the size of it there are so many other factors that have to go into consideration with TV's before the true quality of something can be argued
That's why I bought the best 60" panel on the market today, the Pioneer Elite 151FD.
I have the laserdisc of tpm. Not sure how that could help you, but if I could do something for you let me know.

Uhh...dude...you really don't know what you're talking about and, like your 35mm thread, are clearly out of your league. Adywan IS using an HD source for this project. I never said he wasn't.

Agreed. I never said size was the only consideration.

that's not what i said, you were referring to "ANH:R" , which applies to your complaints about
compression and artifacts...... of course, we all know that this thread is about HD..
backing up, you still seem to think that even with this project, the final result on a DVD-9
will not match up to some supposed clarity of a future version that isn't even confirmed..
oh well, enough of that... back to the other topics..
