I want one too please!

For anybody who know's they are going to buy the DVD, but don't want to support the SE, you can always buy the official release off Ebay, come Sept.

That's what I'm doing.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I'm assuming that what you mean by this is that we should buy the actual release as a resale (read: "used") copy so LFL won't see any additional profits? If so, then that really doesn't sound like a half-bad idea. Remember that you can do this with the Amazon Marketplace as well with people selling used copies there.

I'm not buying anything that is SE only. I have the DVD's I made from my LD's and that is good enough for me. Anyway, what good is a pretty picture and sound if you hate the movie? I hate the SE's with a passion.

Lucas has said that as far as he's concerned, the original cuts no longer exist. How can one create a bootleg of a film that doesn't exist?

Go nuts. Doesn't bother me a bit anymore. I purchased some backups from TR47 that are pretty decent. I'd encourage anyone who wants a copy to get in touch with him--whether you own the originals or not. Decent video quality with the original stereo PCM tracks intact. If Lucas doesn't want to sell them to you, why is it so bad to get them from someone who does?

I guess the one good thing about all this is that the value of my THX Faces LDs just went through the roof. Too bad I let go of the Definitive Collection last year. I'm sure that will go up in value as well.

I don't know if anyone noticed the numbers, but over 700 people signed the petition today after the announcement from Lucasfilm. Some people obviously still feel that we can get what we want. I'm not so sure anymore, but I don't plan on taking the site down anytime soon.

If only people had the willpower not to purchase the September box set. Despite all the pissing and moaning, 99% of Star Wars fans will end up forking over the cash anyway. Lucas will be rewarded for doing the wrong thing, a bunch of tools will continue to bitch about the SEs while they secretly open their wallets for the box set, and things will continue as they are. I could tolerate the SEs myself if the Han/Greedo scene were restored and the lameass Jabba's palace video from Jedi were removed, but I have a feeling that they'll still be intact.

Based on current information, I won't be buying the September box set.

To be honest, I've watched LOTR more times in the last two years than I've watched Star Wars in the last ten. Not sure I care at this point if the theatrical cuts ever make it to home video again.

I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed to the cause, whether it be through newspaper articles, interviews, banners on web sites, or simple e-mails to friends saying, "Sign it now punkass!" I'd also like to present a big fat middle finger to the sites who used the petition to get attention for their own benefit and dropped their support as soon as we were no longer the flavor of the month. Special thanks to dvdfile.com for maintaining a high-profile "Han Shoots First" banner to this very day on some of their most visited pages.

Thanks most of all to the forum members. Good bunch of folks here.

P.S. - Jim Ward needs to stop licking George's ass. What a fucking moron.

IMHO the best way to do this is to have everyone that wants a dvd too send you just the S&H Postage and 1 blank disc «Self Addressed Stamped Envelope» to a P.O. Box (if you do not want to use your home address) . that way no ones making any money off this.

It is too bad GL will not be putting the OT somewere in to the set.

But I am Happy there WILL be Something.

I too won the OT LaserDisc Set. its "The Definitive Collection" I plan to save up for one of those -/+R,RW Recorders.

but I will buying the SEs also in Sep.

@Jay: Although I've not been a busy poster at all, I was with this site from the beginning and I can really relate to your frustration and loss of interest in the whole thing. It may seem silly, but I imagine George Lucas sitting in his throne room gloating at our 'insignificant rebellion' against his narcissist corporate enforcement of the SE. But I still believe I can resist buying the SE dvds in september, if Luke could resist the dark side - so can we.

This is a little offtopic, but who gave Lucas the right to mess with Episodes V & VI for the "special edition's" in the first place? Last time I checked V was directed by Irvin Kershner, and VI was directed by Richard Marquand(who is deceased). Granted is the fact that Georgie wrote the whole story and produced(etc. etc.), but he only directed IV. I'm curious as to what Kershner and Marquand(if he was still alive) would think about his tampering with the films to the extent he has. I don't know, but something about the whole aspect of going back and messing with films years after their release really irks me. A "director's cut" is one thing, but what Lucas is doing is just plain wrong in my view. He's taken it to a whole new level.

Simple legal issue. Since film is a collaborative medium, it is not protected copyright-wise in the same way as works of literature; hence, why so many films are in the public domain. As for the moral rights of the directors (which is the real issue here), Lucas could have simply had Kershner and Marquand waive their moral rights, which would mean that they had no say in how the film was altered. Case closed.

New guy here. I signed the petition long ago but just now joined the forum.
I just saw a report about the DVD's on Fox News. They played up the fact that George is being selfish with the original theatrical cuts.

Jay,

Please don't give up hope. Having your website has been a great inspiration to me. I'm not buying the Sept. set as it stands now nor am I seeing Episode III. I hated Episodes I and II anyway, so not seeing III is no loss. I will see Episode III only if the Original Versions come to DVD before it comes out.

I too have DVD's of the Original Versions. I just finished making them from the Definitive Collection LD's late last month. I worked very hard on them from Thanksgiving until the end of January. They aren't perfect, but they are better than the Special Editions. I plan to make better versions once the technology improves. To keep the bitrates high, I split each film onto two DVD-R's. I converted them to 16:9, cropped the LD black bars, and added my own pure black bars. This made them look better because the LD black bars are too light and are not pure black. Since I did this, I had to recreate the subtitles for Greedo in Hope and Jabba in Jedi. I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but my subtitles look better than the LD's because they are yellow and easy to read. They are also in the film image as they were originally instead of in the bottom black bar.

The disc that took the longest was the extras. I encoded each interview separately. I also took all of the still images and made slideshows instead of having them setup like they were on the LD where you had to keep pressing the >> button. Basically the disc flows like this: Main menu pictures of each of the original posters (one for each film) that you click on to go to a submenu. Each of these submenus lists all of the extras for that film. The hardest part was making a play all button option where you could choose to play all of the interviews or slideshows for that particular film.

Here are pictures of my menus for the extras disc. I know they are cheesy, but I feel pretty good about them.

Anyway, my plan is to buy a 250 Gb hard drive and capture all 3 of the films to it (I didn't have the space to keep the captures, only the encoded MPEG-2 files I made) and one of those new DVD burners that can make dual layered DVD's. That way I can fix a couple little trouble spots with my encodes and have each film on one disc. I worked too hard on creating my own DVD's to buy Lucas' garbage SE's.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not against his artistic vision. I don't expect him to drop his SE's. I just want hime to include the Original Versions along side those. I guess that's too much for him to handle though.

I also hear you about all of the sheep who are going to flock to buy the Sept. release. I don't care what it is. I won't buy any DVD unless it is absolutely what I want. I held off on many releases until better versions came along because of being burned so many times by subpar releases.

I hope you don't mind, but here are the pictures from my extra disc menus. They are nothing fancy, but I kind of like them. I didn't put any motion menus or any background music on any of the discs I made. I wanted to save as much space as I could for the audio and video quality. I also hope the pictures don't violate the file size limits of the forum.

Take care.

Patrick

I hate to say it people, but the only thing that will get George Lucas to release the Original Trilogy on DVD is lackluster sales of the September 21st release (not going to happen) or an overwhelming popularity of bootlegs of the Laserdisc copies on the Internet.

George Lucas has proved that he's more of a business man than a director. He'd change his mind if he felt there was enough financial opportunity involved, even if that meant he would put his ego asside.

So get those bootlegs out there people!

If anyone is interested, you may want to check out this very long thread at www.dvdrhelp.com . That is where I got my information while I was converting my LD's. I'll gladly give any information to anyone who needs help in converting there LD's to DVD. The thread is here: It is quite a long read. I would mainly look at the last 10 pages or so. I've been an active member there for a few years, so it was easy for me to keep up with. What I also did was click on the printer friendly button and save the whole thread as a Word file and edit out the posts that I didn't need. There are people there just as upset as we are about the whole situation.

I actually bought the LD Player and LD's in Nov. 2002, but I wasn't too successful in getting any of them made until I bought a Canopus ADVC-100. I was having sound sync issues before I bought that jewel. I attribute the problem to my cheap built in soundcard though.

Once I got started, I was able to finish all 3 films in a month and a half due to my work schedule and occassional laziness.

I hope this information helps.

Wow. This guy is so unbelievable. This whole thing is such a fucking whacked artistically inverted nightmare. I agree with Jay if only everyone had the discipline not to buy those disks. It is so insane what he has done to those films. I mean....I dont even really know what to say. It would be one thing guys, if it looked correct. But it doesn't. Youd think he'd realize that Jabba the hutt looks fucking retarded and the Greedo shoots first thing didnt adhere to physics whatsoever. But he just doesnt. He doesnt give a fuck about film, Episode III will suck. And its just over. The least he could do is to make the changes look great. He just pays no attention whatsoever to the language of cinema any longer and there is nothing we can do but to just let that guy fucking implode. Which he will do. I am so fucking pissed off man. This really sucks. I am banning George Lucas. Not that it is going to matter to him, but it is for my own personal satisfaction. We all know who has the definitive, cinematic fantasy trilogy presently anyway.

Shouldnt be too hard to come up with an idea of who it might be...

Later guys.

Bill Hunt from thedigitalbits.com personally confirmed with Jim Ward of LFL that these will be the Special Editions from 1997.

Here's a link to the page... Star Wars details

And here's the actual damning text for those who don't want to bother with the above link...

I have officially confirmed that the films will be the 1997 Special Edition versions, as determined by Lucas himself.

Jay, if I can nab a copy of the OT from someone here on the site on DVD, I'm not buying the September release as well. Luke will probably help us out, but just in case, is anyone else here willing to hook us up? Patrick, your versions sound pretty damn nice as well. You willing to make copies for a price?

First off, don't give up hope people. This is a great site and until everything's completely finished, fight on. I've been expecting this announcement for a long time now regarding the different rumors that were around on the net. Since this is the official release now, there's something we still gotta look at. The main rumors lately is that he was going to release some form of the SE and then his rumored Ultimate Editions after Ep III, probably 2006 sometime. It was also rumored that (if at anytime) the OT was to be released on DVD it would be with the UE in 2006. That's what I'm still hoping for. Hopefully it will be included with the UE when he releases those.

With that said, I agree with the rest of you that he needs to be sent a message. That's the only way he'll understand what the fans want. Jay, you might want to create a boycottSE.com (that was off the top of my head) to get the message out there. I think supporting the bootleg DVD's, not buying the SE versions is the only way Lucas will listen.

That said, I am weak when it comes to Star Wars and still love it today. I thought the idea of buying the SE DVD through Ebay or Amazon was a great idea. That's what I plan to do. At least that way, Lucas won't get my money (since it's already bought). Get the message out there. Tell your friends. I still hope that the OT will be released on the UE in 2006.

I would like to say hello to everyone, I have been away due to being massively busy, but no more. And you can bet this Jedi Master stands with you. I am going to get more signatures and I am going to figure out where to email GL. He is getting my mail, everyday. It will not be HATE mail, but I will civily inform every day that this is a mistake. That is what I am going to do.

It's time to start a new petition!!!

WE WON'T BUY ANY STAR WARS SET UNLESS IT INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL DVDS!!!!

We get a few ohhh I don't know a few 50,000 signatures to that and we'll see how their "artistic vision" changes!
WE MUST DO SOMETHING!

Guys, I know I was real pessimistic earlier, but we have GOT TO DO SOMETHING. We have got to make this happen somehow. We need another 200,000 signatures on this thing and we need them NOW. I am seriously going to go to work today and tell every single fan there to please come here and use their voice to help us get this done. He has made such a grave mistake and although it is hard for a genius steeped in Japanese philospohy to reverse himself ( thats what we have before us here...) We must get him to comply with this. I do not want to NOT buy these films. Lets keep talking together and use our voice to get this thing pushed through.

Speaking as reigning postmaster around here, I love that so many of you are showing up and making your voices heard. I was worried as hell that only the regulars were around anymore. Great to have you here and it's incredible to have your support.

We are not done fighting. I'm pissed and frustrated and all that jazz, but I have only begun to fight.

In the words of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

Now let's show Lucas that the fans are who matters. Let's remind Lucas that we are the ones who made him who he is. If it wasn't for our loyalty, our love, and, especially, our dollars, he would be just another hack Hollywood director.

Why not simply start a MAIL CAMPAIGN? Flood Lucasfilm with letters. Flood ILM with letters. Flood Skywalker Sound with letters.

Have an ORIGINAL TRILOGY mail day or days.

Everyone mails their letters (as many as they want) on a certain day or days.

It's how Star Trek was saved for one more season.

PS: NOT buying this box set when it comes out and I am urging EVERYONE to do the same. Buy a backup copy of the Laserdisc from eBay and be happy. Show the Madman known as "George Lucas" that we mean business!
