You know, for the Asteroid sequence, I don't know if you plan on sprucing that up a little or not; but there's this nice-looking rendition of it on the EditDroid extras disc 1 special effects menu.  I could show you, if you're interested.  The CG does look dated, but the shot itself is good.

Well i'm recovering from last nights party. Had a great time but the Darth Vader suit wasn't a good idea. Just way to hot and restricting. i'm gutted that no one seemed to have brought a camera with them though and the 2 shots the wife too on her phone were just too dark to see anything. the thing is the suit got slightly damaged during the night (plus i ran out of time to complete the costume so a few things were missing). But i'm going to repair it this week and i'll post some pics when its done

Nothing about the 1980 version of Empire Strikes Back sucked. It was a seminal moment in film history where everything came together in the end in complete narrative and aesthetic synergy. There are only a handful of films that can boast such perfection (e.g. Lawrence of Arabia) At the end of the day, were there a proper anamorphic DVD transfer of this original 1980 version, there would be no need for Adywan to even work on this film. As it is however, sadly, there is no proper DVD and hence Adywan must take a not-so-special edition and make it special so we can have something that is presentable on a modern home theater.

Whether you like the prequels or not, I believe it is very shortsighted to declare that simply because something is 28 years old means it must be updated and changed. At its very essence, Empire Strikes Back is THE ONE AND ONLY Star Wars film that did work seamlessly right out of the gate. The film was the product of a courageous script, brilliantly directed and produced with groundbreaking effort and convention-breaking choices.

Star Wars, while a narrative success certainly, suffered from the compromised budget that left many of its optical effects lagging far short of intentions (which Ady has now admirably corrected). Return of the Jedi was always only one-third the movie it was originally intended to be, and the special edition only complicated the matter. Phantom Menace was a racehorse that tripped out of the gate and limped around the track. Attack of the Clones was, aside from 10 minutes in the middle, an insipid intelligence-insulting love farce. Revenge of the Sith was, in many ways, the most troubled and negligent film of them all - the one without any excuses and yet even after almost six hours of time in previous films to tell the story of Anakin Skywalker, the creators waited until the last 20 minutes of Sith to finally get around to the essential story in a series of truncated scenes tacked on to the end in wipes while blatantly ignoring major sections of established continuity and throwing those to the wind.

The Empire Strikes Back is the only film without either fatal narrative flaws or compromising technical errors. It is "Star Wars" fully realized and the way it was originally intended, no matter what revisionist history you believe. So, if spaceship interiors a movie make, then have at it. For me, there's nothing wrong with the ship interiors, they look amazing - and probably because like every other single element of Empire Strikes Back, they all service the story and not the other way around.

Ady, my apologies for waxing poetic about this in your thread. Feel free to delete at your leisure if this offends you.

If I was a betting man I would lay odds that Adywan agrees with everything you said.....I sure do.

Once again you put to words what the majority of us feel. Props to you my friend.

Well you would have won that bet. ESB is the best movie out of the whole saga, one of the very few sequels that actually surpasses its predecessor. I remember seeing it on opening day when i was 13 and i was mesmerized by it. It was as if star wars had matured just as i was at the time. While Star Wars was a great movie that changed my life i felt after walking out of that theatre that ESB was now my favourite film of all time. If Empire was this good compared to ANH then i just couldn't wait for Jedi (boy was i disappointed 3 years later)

if this movie is so great, why DON'T YOU OWN IT? am i the first person to come onto

this board, that actually was bothered enough to get it? and by the way, i'm desperately

and i THINK TO ANYONE ELSE THAT HAS BEEN TO THIS BOARD...............

where do you come off, on being the all-knowing, all-speaking voice for supposedly

everyone here?

don't you think i have better things to do with my money and my time?

the only reason i'm sharing this stuff on this board, is because i'm tired of

waiting around for anyone to do anything about it..

if its that easy for a 'casual' fan such as myself to get this, what is everyone

else doing (and yes, i'm totally aware of all the restoration projects, and other

things going on, and am totally appreciate of what there is going on)..

if everyone would quit griping about there is NO HD, anamorphic versions of the

movies they liked, why don't they actually do something about it? i've been coming

to these boards for years, and i KNOW that there have been plenty of copies in

16mm, and 35mm of the trilogy on ebay several times (a 16mm version of empire

sold for twice what i paid for the 35mm version)..........

are you telling me that nobody has bothered to acquire a version that they are

willing to share with the community up until now??????? i find it hard to believe,

but you seem to be telling me that is the case..

wow, you just insulted every member of OT.com. i can't believe you just said all that. Not everyone here has the type of funds to be able to buy a copy off ebay and get it transferred. i personally know someone who, 6 years ago, acquired a 35mm copy of the pre-SE  ROTJ that he tried to get transferred. he found a place that would do the transfer and then, when he handed over the first reel, the lot was confiscated and handed over to lucasfilm and was prosecuted for attempting to make a copy of a copyrighted movie. It cost him his home and job. As you have found out, its not easy to find somewhere that will touch the transfer process of a star wars movie and risk the wrath of the Lucasfilm lawyers. I admire what you are doing with your 35mm preservation but to insult everyone here like this is just plain wrong. Sometimes i think you just post stuff like this to be controversial and its beginning to get pretty tiresome, and not just to me either.

You are definitely in a minority there. ROTS is nowhere near as great as ESB. for one ESB doesn't contain anything that's as cringeworthy as the balcony scene. Empire has its flaws but nothing that compares to the flaws in the PT

Hello guys, my first post here! :D

I have spoken to Adywan on Youtube, and asked him some things. Most of these were already added to the list, so there are only four things left that I would like to be added:

- Give the lightsaber duel a faster pace. (I didn't see it on the list?)
- Change the interior of the ships (on Hoth?) So they look more like the prequels
- Let the platforms of the ships (Where the people walk in and out the ship) go down more smoothly (In Cloud City etc.)
- Add more ships to Cloud City

Excuse me if they are already on the list. And Excuse me for my bad English, I hope you can understand me xD.

Cas_Tanje

My opinion:

1 not gonna happen, the fight is good as it is

2 not gonna happen, the interiors are fine, the prequels suck :)

3 like it, would be better if it is smoother faster

4 also good, since a LOT of people live/work there, just no overload, just a couple more here and there

1 - Oh common! Imagine how many better the fight will be! Why shouldn't adywan do that as he did with Obi vs. Vader in A New Hope?

It would also be better if he added some music as he did with ANH.

And the worst part is when Vader starts throwing things to Luke (with the force offcourse). It really looks fake! Those things won't hurt at that low speed. Maybe you can speed those things up?

Face it xD ! The fight just isn't spectacular anymore. In my opinion it really has to be a little pimped!

2 - It doesn't matter if the prequels suck, the OriginalTrilogy is the future of the PrequelTrilogy. The interiors look prehistoric, not futuristic. That's why they could use a good makeover. They just don't fit anymore in the chronologic order.

3 - Thank you :D !
4 - Thanks again :D xD!

So, Adywan/GoodMusician, please consider that you add these things to the list.

Cas_tanje

welcome to the boards Cas_Tanje.

1: I think the saber duel doesn't need anything doing to it. ANH needed something done to the duel to give it the faster pace but the vader/ Luke duels look fine to me. the boxes thrown at Luke would hurt at low speed. they are heavy objects. the speed of them means nothing. it doesn't need to be spectacular. Luke has only had a small amount of training and Vader isn't trying to kill his son

2:Everything in the OT is supposed to have that worn/old look to it. The PT shows the galaxy in a time before the Empire when everything looks new . when the Empire took charge times became hard for everyone. The only things that need an update tweak are the displays. The interiors are fine and the style of the OT interiors were used in the PT at the end of ROTS so they don't need updating

The XVID is PAL speed, isn't it?  That would make sense...

The ANH:R XVID was NTSC

Adywan, are you making an audio commentary about all the fixes and changes you made to the movies? Perhaps you could make a short video of you working on the movies?

I did consider it when working on ANH but i decided against it. I may do one once the OT:R section is finished, but its doubtful.

Adywan, If you need clouds to compostite, I have A Hi-Def Camera, I could get some for you to composite, like on Bespin (With a little croping of course!) Ya or Nay, Whaterver, I Shall do it anyways (yes I took these!) Tell me if they help!

i like those 2 skylines. these are the type of clouds i would need. i was thinking of trying to get hold of a 1080p camcorder to capture some moving clouds instead of using stills but its out of my price range, but would have been very beneficial to the edit for the cloud city scenes as you can tell where they try to animate still shots of th clouds. its just looks too fake. i guess i need to start saving. what camera do you have Josh?I have a canon 350d, which is a great digital SLR. i would love to see one of those pics in their natural resolution and uncompressed

Two quick observations for Ady if you're reading this - 1) Right before Han gives C-3PO "the finger" as they're trying to get the Falcon out of Echo Base the entire computer console prop shakes because he's leaning on it - Don't know if that has been mentioned before.

Secondly, in the opening shot of Echo Base where Han rides up to the cavernous entrance on the Tauntaun, I don't recall if it was an SE addition or an Ady addition, but the Rebel Soldier standing straight up and holding the gizmo near the turret - well, he kinda looks mannequin-like. I think it's his "stillness" and his pose. I know he's "moving" in the shot, but in the span of the footage at a glance, he kind of looks like a cardboard cutout.

Every other element in that shot looks perfect. The guy with the cannon control box just isn't meshing as well.

Just an observation - take it for what it's worth - which is very little, my friend. Very little. lol

nohandluke

Yeh i want to redo that whole FX shot of the Falcon going behind the cloud. As for the Echo base entrance, that was one i did. It was only a test shot and i want to replace the standing officer with one that has more motion.

GoodMusician said:

As for musical changes, the only thing I'd suggest is for the arrival at cloud city, there are two takes available of the music,. One with the choir mixed much louder and the instruments fucked up, and the one on the Anthology which is the film take. If you wanted more choir, I could mix the two easily... but its up to you... I dunno if the choir was meant to be heard that loudly.

I only have the Anthology version of the ESB soundtrack (apart from a few tracks from the SE CD) so i can't really comment on this i'm afraid

I won't be adding any music to the saber duels. it doesn't need it. that was one of the problems with the PT. Too much music, with a lot of it just re-used tracks.

As for the asteroid scene i will be recompositing most of it so a lot of tweaking for those scenes

The only things that need an update tweak are the displays

On this subject I was wondering if you had any plans for the display in the Millennium Falcon when Han first mentions Lando. As it is we only see a glow reflected on the characters' faces. It's not exactly necessary in my mind but I don't think it would hurt — any thoughts?

No, i don't think that we need to see a display at that point so i won't be adding one. Some things are best left for your imagination to do the work. Things were over explained in the PT which really hurt the films and i don't want to go down that route for the Revisited edits.

Any chance you could end the film with Luke, Leia, 3P0 & R2 looking out the window in your edit, Adywan?

If you're looking for a high def motion camera that's considerably cheap, you could try the Speed HD7Z.  It does up to 720p, which should work pretty well for your edit.  They're on ebay and other sites for around $200-500.  I'm not sure why they are so cheap, while having high def capability (I'm sure if I knew my digital camcorders better, I could spot something in the specs that points to the reason--maybe it's the fact it's a completely off-brand name camera).  Anyway, after some more research, I might pick it up myself, so if you still need some cloud city background elements in mid to late september, I can get together some shots for you.

The thing people don't seem to realize is that clouds in real life are not always moving fast enough to be detected by the human eye. Sometime they move sooooo slowly that in a 5 or 10 second period u can't detect any movement at all, try it everytine you can think of it, line up the a cloud edge with electric or telephone pole and you may not see any perceptible movement in that 5 seconds, other times with have a lot of movement. It just depends on the weather.

If this question has already been answered, I'm sorry...

Ady, are you planning to add any more ships to the Rebellion fleet at the end of ESBR?  It would give us a little taste of what's to come in ROTJ and it might be interesting to see a couple of scarred-up ships from the PT in the Rebellion fleet.  Too bad there aren't any really good quality shots of Rendili Star Drive Katana-class ships or anything like that...

Ash, asajjven clearly doesn't have English as his first language, it's hard enough trawling through 118ish pages of posts in your native tongue (I don't know how Ady does it).  I'm sure you don't mean to put off people who may add something somewhere which we all missed by being a rude get but please show a little appreciation and courtesy.

On a general note, I'm glad that Adywan isn't adding any prequel music to ESB.

The score is sublime as it is.

It's the prequels (and Jedi) that need to borrow from it.

We have a lovely little droids theme that as far as I can tell never turns up again and Han and Leia's theme barely get a mention in ROTJ even when it would make more sense to use it than Luke and Leia's theme.

It's the prequels which brake the rules of leitmotif (What the hell was the Battledroids theme doing during the Clone trooper reveal in AOTC ? I'd have extended the old Imperial theme from ANH and turned that into the stormtrooper theme and the Imperial March shouldn't appear until the end of ROTS and not at the end of AOTC).

Jedi on the other hand is a real mess and the score needs a real fix but John Williams really didn't put a foot wrong with Empire.

Adywan, I can't remember if anyone has asked this but will you be tweaking/animating Yoda's facial expressions like the aliens in S.W.R? and adding a few more insects and froggy things in the Dagobah swamp?

Huh? Did you see the Star Destroyer bridge in ROTS? Display panels looked like ESB, and also the Tantive IV looked the same as ANH.

It's more about aesthetics than technology in my mind.

The argument about the ship panel displays I find strange, Adywan has said in the past that he wanted these (ALL SIX) films to all have good continuity with each other when he is done editing them all. Making statements that the prequels should have less sophisticated displays doesn't help anything. What is done is done, agree with it or not, unless he plans on blacking them out in the prequels. I don't think it would be awful to have some sort of display on the Snowspeeder interiors, tit doesn't need to be fancy, or stand out much, low key is great, but it would make sense to have SOMETHING there, but not shown in a close up.

Ady, regarding the request of Yoda's facial expression, why not try out a sample scene just for the hell of it to see how it would work out. You could do a split screen and show the difference. It would be interesting to see how it would look. If the effect isn't distracting it just might work.

On the subject of Yoda, I agree with Ady that the puppet by-and-large doesn't need any tweaking in terms of expression — I'd suggest, however, at least trying for say a short sequence to do something with the mouth to make it better timed with the dialogue and (perhaps perhaps) make it do a *little* more than just open and close. Other than the mouth, I'd leave it alone, but I'd like to at least see if anything is possible with the dialogue.
