Leia's fate after the first Star Wars...

Apparently, Lucas said when in the planning of Empire Strikes Back that who Leia ended up with was "anybody's guess."  And that Luke was more devoted to her.  Quote from "The Making of Star Wars" featuring R2-D2 and C-3PO.

I always thought he had a little idea for Leia to be related to Luke, but it turns out I was wrong entirely.  So, he's definitely rewitten at least SOME Star Wars history.  I always thought there were some parts he made up and others he didn't, but this proves Leia's relation to Luke was a decision he hadn't had at the beginning - which, mind you, he insisst now was.

Then there's that cut scene from ESB where Luke and Leia are about to kiss, before 3P0 interrupts them (the whole scene is in the comic book adaptation, and partially in one of the trailers).

I don't see how that scene could have been scripted and filmed if Lucas had planned for them to be siblings. The scene where she kisses Luke later is different, because she does it specifically to piss off Han.

This is the one time that I am going to defend Lucas on his older quotes about the saga now.  In one of the documentaries in the recent DVD releases Lucas says, "It was always about these twins, and their father."

Now in that way, I do believe him, cause I think he did have a general idea about that, but he never specifically says Luke/Leia are siblings the same way he lies about Darth Vader being Lukes dad or the saga was always about Anakin.

I think in ESB, the other was Lukes sister, just not Leia at the time, hence why Luke & Leia smooch at the beginning of the movie.  I think if Lucas decided to make more movies with Luke, Leia and Han rather then a trilogy, in the next movie they would explore Luke meeting his long lost sister and he would train her in that movie to become a jedi.  But I think Lucas wanted to end the series with ROTJ, they needed to tie up the 'other' plot point, and Leia was his only way of doing that.

Well, according to zombie's book, in the first draft of Empire, Luke talks to the ghost of his father on Dagobah, who tells him that he has a twin sister who is training on the other side of the galaxy.  However, in later drafts, the sister (and father meeting) plot points are dropped.  But Yoda does mention, "Now we will have to find another" (eventually becoming, "No, there is another").  The sequel trilogy was supposed to feature the other as the central character supposedly, but there was no hint as to who this other was supposed to be.  According to zombie, when ROTJ came around, and Lucas decided to drop the sequel trilogy, he still had to have the other issue be addressed.  Knowing he couldn't introduce a new character, he merged the other idea with the old Jedi sister idea, and the merging resulted in Leia becoming the other and Luke's sister.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Yeah basically i always knew Return of the Jedi was 4 films squeezed into 1.

Lucas was burnt out and deserved some time off.

But not doing the Sequel Trilogy was a major copout.

He could have taken a couple years off or a few years in bewteen trilogies and still finished all 9 films.

It could have been accomplished  with the 1980's technology and did not need to ruin the saga.

There would be No Jar JAr, no Young 8 year old anakin, no qui gon none of that was in the outline for the prequels.

I have never had a problem With Vader being the father and Leia the sister as it makes the saga more like the Mythologies lucas read up on in college. The greek, roman, and norse myths.

But the prequels hung on a single thread of believability Anakins turn to the Darkside, Lucas messed that one up pretty badly.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.
