Will the The New J.J. Abrams Star Trek destroy the Legacy of the original 1960's series? Discussion

I worry that it will be the final nail in the coffin, some are optimistic it will be a new rebirth for Trek.

I have read several reports of retconning the original series and destroying the continuity roddenberry created to create a JJ verse.

I found the Later seasons of Lost and Alias to be absolutely horrible soap drama level crap, with all the so called plot twists.

That godzilla thing (Cloverfield) was the biggest Turd ever released i cannot believe they are making a sequel.

Also the script writers wrote Transformers so i cannot be too optimistic thinking the script will have bad Jokes like Bumblebee peeing on the guy.

I really enjoy Star Trek, but I am by no means a Trekkie. I'd even hesitate to call myself a 'Star Trek fan' because that term seems to carry so much along with it, and I am sure most true fans would find me a disgrace to their kind.

That said, I am not too worried about this upcoming film. Back when Voyager had its finale, and Insurrection was the latest film, I feel ST had quite a bit of respectability left too it. Many people didn't like Voyager as a show nor Insurrection as a movie, but I still felt that it was a decently high point at the time. Then Enterprise and Nemesis came along. Enterprise was the ST equivalent of the SW prequels to me. Horrible show that reconned and destroyed so many things, while managing to suck and bore the crap out of anyone loyal enough to still be watching it after season one. Still can't believe they wasted a whole freaking season on the same stupid 9/11 based terror attack plot line.

Nemesis could have been a good movie... but it just wasn't... for soooo many reasons...

I really am not expecting anything worthwhile from this new movie and would actually rather be seeing a sequel to Nemesis, though I would not be expecting anything good from that either.

The people involved in this new movie have stated so many times that they are trying to reach out to a new audience and attract the average movie goer with no previous Star Trek experience. Oops. To me that spells trouble. Since Batman Begins and Casino Royal went over so well as reboots of their respective franchise, everyone has been trying the reboot, but they don't always work. I am afraid this new ST is not destined to be a Batman Begins, as I am pretty sure the makers are trying to make it to be. In the end I predict it will be a bit of a bastard child, with the true ST fans ignoring it for being crap that forsakes fans and caters to a new audience, and I think it will be ignored by the new audience, the average movie goer, simply because it is Star Trek.

Voyager, the last two movies (Insurrection: The plastic surgery villains, Nemesis: Isn't it fortunate we just "happened" to find this exact duplicate of Data? eh number one? *nudge nudge* eh?), and the first 3 seasons of Enterprise all did enough damage, thank you.

The spin-offs in general were not in keeping with the original series. TNG can be summed up in: "These aliens are trying to kill us, but we're "evolved" so we'll try not to fight back TOO much. Let's sit around and talk for 30 minutes, have a blab session with the Counselor *yawn*, then come up with some BS techno-babble solution to our problem, hit the reset button and do the same thing next week". TNG was good from seasons 3 on, but still suffered from these problems. The first two seasons are some of the worst television I've ever seen.

DS9 made great strides in returning to what made the original great: conflict among the main characters (something sorely lacking in the others), the notion that 300 years is not enough time to create a perfect human went out the window, and the characters were actually DOING something instead of playing chess with Whoopi Goldberg. They were still much too reliant on techno-babble and the reset button (nobody grows, nobody dies FOR REAL). I almost choked when I learned they were bringing back Dax in a new host.

The last season of Enterprise was quite good, IMO. The mini-story arcs, written by people who actually understood the franchise and helmed by Manny Coto, were top-notch. I especially liked the one with Brent Spiner as a young Doctor Soong and the beginnings of the Eugenics Wars. Voyager was an abomination.

The existing canon should stop at the end of DS9. Voyager and Enterprise canon (except season 4) should be tossed out the window. Lord knows how this new movie's going to go down, though it's safe to say that in their attempt to reach a mass audience it will not be a hardcore fan pleasing film.

Has a remake ever destroyed the legacy of the original? I don't think so. No matter what special edition or sequel Lucas makes the original Star Wars will remain Star Wars. It really doesn't make a difference because it is not like there is anything we have lose anyway. If you don't like it don't see it. It is that simple. You can even make up your own continuity.

I grew up watching the original series on reruns, but TNG was the ST I really enjoyed as a kid, and I still enjoy it very much today, much more then TOS. So we are obviously coming from two different places.

Also to me, while Voyager sucked a good deal, it really had some great moments buried in there, especially in the middle seasons. And while DS9 is pretty much worshiped by Trekkies, I have been working my way through it from start till finish, I am only on the third season at this point, but my goodness, it has plenty of crappiness fit to rival Voyager.

As for Enterprise season four, that was quite funny actually. All along they had been saying, 'eventually we will do this and that, and we would really like to find some way to do that or this...' then the thing got canceled and they realized that season four was the end, so they cut to the chase and started doing all those things they said they always wanted to do. That is why we got the Gorn, the mirror universe, Orion slave girls, Dr. Soong, and Klingon foreheads all in the same season.

I must admit, I did enjoy some bits from season four of Ent., the Klingon forehead thing was unforgivable, typically fanboy sounding lame explanation for why TOS Klingons looked like Earthlings.

Heh, I actually liked Worf's explanation in DS9:  "Trials and Tribble-ations."  You know, the whole, "We don't speak of it to outsiders," thing.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The whole Worf explanation wasn't a problem to me, it was a funny joke, skirting the question rather than coming up with some convoluted in-universe explanation as to why the Klingon's had smooth heads like Enterprise ultimately did. The real world explanation of makeup limitations should be more than enough. Makeup limitations was also Gene Roddenberry's official explanation of the issue. When they made Star Trek The Motion Picture, they decided to make the Klingon's a bit more unique.

I disagree With Sean over Star Wars and Lucas.  The originals are ruined because of the gout and being forever buried in favor of th extra crap editions. Star Wars legacy is tainted forever because of the prequels.

For example before the prequels were made the issue #1 Marvel comic i have was very highly valued and went way down in value because of episode 1.  Fans of the oot have begun to sell off their collections and sell out their shares in George because of his betrayal.

From TrekMovie.com:

Will it fit with Star Trek History (canon)?
Yes.
The writer/producers (Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman) as well as star Leonard Nimoy have repeatedly said they will respect Trek history and canon.

Does ‘Trek canon’ allow for Kirk and Spock meeting before the Original Series?
Yes.
First it is not yet clear if the film will be set before the 5 year mission or not, but if so, there is nothing in established canon that would contradict meeting before.

I thought the coolest fucking thing about this movie is that Bruce Greenwood from Nowhere Man is in it.  Loved that show in its first season.

Heroes fans get to see Sylar as Spock!
