Very glad you decided against HD actually! Way, way too large of a beast!! And much, much more time would have been required to finish this project. EPIV Revisited looks amazing, and this will probably look even better. Great news, as we will have this movie in our hands twelve years faster this way!! Peace.....

Thing is, to Mr. Joe Pubilc, I dont get the full HD, brand.

If my current set-up thats cost me a measly couple of grand, upscales a DVD9 and im happy with it, that doesnt outshine the lastest benchmark 'full HD' transfer in any major groundbreaking way, i ask, why now?

There has not been anywhere near the impact of showing any of my friends a full HD movie, compaired to showing them YOUR Star Wars:Revisited (and most of them dont really 'get' Star Wars, but we all love movies). So, for me, why alter a formula you have already mastered? And, expecially if it makes some things youve mastered difficult, then why?

Dont for one second see DVD as old technology (as then the industry that gave us DRM has already won, and would we even been discussing this?), until im inevitably proved wrong (and i even buy most of their crap).

You still have HD encodes tackle it again when (A):storage is cheeper than it is now. (B):you have pushed your bounderies beyond your limitations. (3):Blu-Ray re-writable media maybe readily accessible. And, (IV):ultimatly, when Lucas film out-do you with their eventual, long way off, enough adopters of HD technology, release of their SE Blu-Ray original trilogy, that most of us will buy, but never really love, like what YOU can do now, why not out-do them using their HD source after they release it too all us suckers, and show them up a second time?

Quoting my self in a previous post again.

Those who questioned my motives against an HD release, may realise what i was getting at now.

Will also be good to have the set in the same format aswell ;-)

Just to repeat things everything else is saying; No problems here that there will be no HD version, the quality of your DL release is allready great :)

Seems like Ady may have been the only one dead set 'for' a HD release ;)

I just wanted to bring this up, just in case that it hasn't been already, but one ESB scene that bugs me is when Luke gets his hand lopped off. His arm still looks too long. I hope that this scene can be altered/fixed.

Again, I apologize if this has already been mentioned previously. I just can't go back through all the other posts.

Thanks.

btw, isn't there an ongoing "fix" list somewhere?

I do not fear the Dark Side as you do.

Adywan,

Good to hear that you're sticking with SD.  Although I'm an HD junkie and don't rent DVDs anymore, I also realize that you'd be seriously limiting the amount of footage you could reuse.  I originally watched ANHR blown up on a 100" screen and the quality was better than I thought it'd be.  Maybe someday when Lucas passes on and his heirs release the OOT in HD you'll get a chance to do revisited in HD.

I haven't posted here in a while, but I hit upon an idea that, like many postulated here, may or may not work.

Perhaps the "Luke and Leia" theme could play when Luke contacts Leia from under Cloud City, in place of the Force Theme. Of course, the original music could "bleed" through under the new music, so... I'm not altogether sure about this. It could work, but still...

Just thought I'd throw it out there.

That scene as it is with the force theme going is so powerful, I don't think it's a good idea to change it.

(but I guess I'd have to take a look at that with different music first to be 100% sure of my opinion)

It bothers me to know end that yoda's theme plays during part of the escape from cloud city, and the emperor conversation needs some emperor's theme. ANHR plays emperors theme at the mere mention of the emperor so it's fitting the the emperor's first OT appearance gets his theme.

Author

Ady already said he considered adding snippets of the emperor's theme into that scene. But I think it will be pretty low-key.

Adywan, have you thought of adding Hoth's moon at the beginning of the movie, and in the rebel ships escape/Imperial space attack sequence?

This may have been answered already. If so then I apologise.

Are you going to fix the opening crawl? It's been a while since I watched Empire Strikes Back but I have a distinct memory of the crawl texts not being fully on the screen when it appears. I may just be remembering a fullscreen version and if that's the case then you can ignore this.

If I'm right though and you do plan on fixing it, it may be worthwhile doing it from scratch. You could just ignore it I suppose, but it's inconsistent with the crawls from the rest of the saga which either start out right on the edge or just inside.

If you do decide to redo the crawl from scratch, I may be able to help. I think I'm getting pretty good at creating these crawls.

On a related but slightly off topic note, I've read you aren't planning to do any more work on Star Wars Revisited, so I wanted to ask if it would be ok with you if I went back and fixed the crawl. I've noticed that the timing is off on it in Revisited. It would be just for me and I wouldn't try to upload and pass the whole thing off as my own, but I still wanted to check if it would be ok with you.

I hope it's ok for me to post links here. This is a rough version of what I have in mind. I did it earlier today. It's not perfect, it was a quick 20 minute job:

You may recognise the starfield...it's from Revisited. You can download the video from vimeo at the bottom of the page.

If you want I can try a version for The Empire Strikes Back.

The crawl for EPIV REVISITED doesn't need fixing. The timing was changed to have the crawl appear at the cue it was intended to appear and did appear before they added "A NEW HOPE". Ever since they added the episode number it screwed the music up. I always remember it appearing at that cue and hated it when it came in later with the Episode IV title. All Revisited edits will ahve the cue appear at that cue.  Also all the crawls are different. I won't be redoing any of the crawls for the OT. I like the individuality of each crawl so i won't be fixing anything apart from the timing of the appearence.

I'm pretty sure that you don't see a moon in the movie so i won't be adding a moon. The EU doesn't exists to me and as i have said before if it doesn't appear or isn't referenced in any of the movies then i won't be adding it to the  Revisited saga.

I also won't be adding Luke & Leia's theme to this movie I'm afraid

And I, for one, thank you for that, Ady - that has always bugged the hell out of me, and I'm glad to see it done properly.  I was worried at first that you'd only do that to ANH, and I'm quite glad to hear you're fixing it for all 3 movies.

The only thing I'd have done differently to the crawls was to make "ANH" into the '77 version with just "STAR WARS," then make new title cards for "EMPIRE" and "JEDI" based on their logos to replace the "STAR WARS," while removing the "Episode *: Etc." "subtitle."  Mainly so I could pretend there were only 3 movies.  But it's far too late for that suggestion.

Hey Ady,

Just wanted to tell you how happy I am to hear that you have moved back into SD. While I was excited about the ambition, I know it would have been a serious hurdle to jump. Plus, as stated before, your SD for Star Wars is so crisp and clear, I say without exaggeration that it rivals and equals many of the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs I own.

Empire in AdySD is more than satisfactory by me.

nohandluke

I would also like to echo the sentiment above about having a version of the crawl where there is the "vintage" Empire logo instead of the "Star Wars" logo - That classic Empire logo you used in the trailer for Empire Revisited sent chills through me - might be cool to have an "alternate" crawl where that logo is displayed in all its glory.

That's a good idea, except I'd like it better this way:

Movie Title         Opening Crawl Title

ANH Revisited         Star Wars

ESB Revisited         Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

ROTJ Revisited        Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

All I'd want is for the Episode #s to be removed, but since ANHR is done, then forget it.

Author
Time

Well, the official logos say "STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" and "STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI," so those would be the official titles if someone implemented my idea.  I'm talking about using these logos, in yellow, receding into the background just after "A long time ago ... " just like the "STAR WARS" logo does now:

Then the crawl starts up with "It is a dark time for ... " or "Luke Skywalker has returned ... " without the "EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" or "EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI" at all.

I apologize for taking up so much time with this since I know it won't happen now, but damn, I wish someone would do this.

yeah,

the dual layer ANH:R DVD was very good in quality..

but its no match for HD resolution..

i understand the technical reasons for not doing this..

i would have really liked to see it in that format..

anyways, there's still the modified SE versions for

the PS3 still coming out that ARE in HD.... i'll be looking

forward to those..

With Adywan, we've learned to expect the unexpected. Whatever he does will be a major addition to the site and our collections, whatever resolution it is. :) It would be kinda neat to know how much faster something like a color correction pass can be done with quad core versus dual core.

a few months ago, i bought a 2.8Gig core 2 duo, for something like US$600....

and now there are more powerfull QUAD core machines for less than that, with

more memory, etc..... of course, i knew that.... but i didn't not expect prices to

fall that quickly..

i only use intel, but i know that AMD is desperately trying to compete (not that well),

but maybe its helping bring down the price, i also a triple-core from AMD that was

cheap, but i wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole (its a quad core, with 1 processor

that didn't pass testing)...........................

i know that intel has new processors in Larrabee, and the i7core chips coming out

later, but i've never liked being on the bleeding edge.... supposedly  AMD+ATI is

coming out with some GPU chips to compete also, and although NVIDIA will never

be allowed to, they talk about making general purpose GPU chips also.......

i think once we get the octo-core machines (some are out there now), and the

n-core machines, where you can mix and match the processors to your needs,

along with multi-core GPU's for the graphics, ,we'll be set for a few more years...

i'm more interested in the general purpose GPU chips, since i don't game that

much (i have an xbox360 for that)..... so the advances in video card chips don't

interest me as much, although there is talk about being able to use the memory

on those boards, along with those GPU's for other tasks..

exciting times.....
