Star Wars, Take Two?

Obviously, movies have a capitalist component to them, which is why so many different franchises get facelifts. For one recent and relevant example, Batman has been portrayed on the big screen by Adam West, Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Val Kilmer, and now Christian Bale. That's five different Batmen in roughly 40 years over a span of seven films. Think also of James Bond: George Lazenby, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and now Daniel Craig. Six Bonds in well over forty years in I don't know how many films - twelve, fifteen, twenty?

And of course, there are countless others which have given a new interpretation: Mission: Impossible, The Brady Bunch, Bewitched, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Avengers, Shaft, amongst so many others. And lest we forget, Star Trek will get a facelift very soon.

At one time, the idea of a recast and updated Star Wars would have been anathema to me; I have actually done a 180 on this. I actually think Star Wars, the original, would benefit from the existence of a new version.

I've wondered this as well.  I've hoped that if George just re-shot the classic trilogy, he could stop molesting the originals.

However, I don't think we would be so lucky as to get a 1080i Blu-ray version of the classic trilogy as a result of a reboot of the trilogy.  It will still be ignored and we will just be more annoyed.

Sorry, no.

TotalFilm: Are you happy for new Star Wars tales to be told after your gone?

Lucas: I've left pretty explicit instructions for there not to be any more features. There will definitely be no Episodes VII - IX ......

I don't see it happening now, and legally speaking I don't see it after Lucas is 'gone'. I think he's taken care of it.

btw Quantum of Solace is Bond No. 22.

I would go see another Live action Star Wars film if it was written, produced and directed by Someone other than Lucas.

No remaking the classic films that is worse than the special editions.

Hire someone else to write and direct 7-9, or leave star wars be.

A Knights of the Old Republic movie or a film set way into the future like the legacy comics would be awesome if done by someone who could actually write.

They would need to find a director on par with Lucas or Spielberg when they did not suck.

Selecting from a pool of modern directors in hollywood and outside of hollywood who would you pick?

J.J. Abrams,  Joss Whedon, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson. etc.

Could the estate allow it, or would Lucas write into his will "not even over my dead body?"

Hey, whatev. If we can at least get the OOT mastered in HD someday (a feat well within the realm of the possible) then I can live without Episodes VII through IX. It would be hard enough to fit it into continuity, although they have left themselves a one hundred year gap before the Legacy comics start.

While I'm on that subject, no, I don't think we're ever going to see something like a reboot happen with Star Wars. This only happens when the franchise is both creatively bankrupt and not still controlled by the guy who started it 30 years earlier. Even when Lucas is gone, the most unexpected thing that might actually happen is what we're all on this website for. But I have a feeling that could happen much sooner.

It's been redone in its own way anyway, with alterations to the original and retcons in the prequels. Really, I think that's the key difference between Star Wars and the other franchises.

So i guess there is not a chance in hell of even twenty years from now An episode seven directed by Jett Lucas hits the silver screen, LOL.

I really don't think it would happen because Lucas knows the kind of backlash it would cause.  Even those content with Lucas altering the original trilogy would probably become offended with the originals being scrapped completely.  Because if he did remake them, that's probably what would happen to the originals.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Return of the Jedi is already a remake of Star Wars (I mean the 1977 movie, of course)

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

No.

The reason for most of those other series reboots is because the series themselves became absolutely horrible under multiple directors.  Just look at Batman for a prime example.  The first one was pretty good.  The second one wasn't quite as good, but it was still bearable.  Then enter Joel Schumacher.  The series became completely horrid.  Val Kilmer and George Clooney were horrible as Batman.  The suit became a total joke (anyone remember all the nipple jokes?).  They gave him two tries and the second one was even worse then the first.  The only way to resurrect it at that point was to fire him and then hire people who loved the comics and wanted to bring that feel back to the movies.  Enter Christopher Nolan.

Star Trek has become pretty similar, but not nearly as bad.  Again, they just needed some fresh blood and some people who are huge fans of the originals.

Star Wars doesn't need a reboot of the originals.  It needs a reboot of the prequels.  But that will only happen with a different director and it would end up being a Fan Film at that point anyway.

it would be kinda weird, but i would think that they can refilm everything and put the original characters in somehow. maybe make them cgi, though not notice it. they did that with obi wan in epsiode II when he jump out the window, caught the droid and flew across the city.

Otherwise, i don't see it happening with new characters only because of the novels and graphic novels they have out. it wouldn't fit.

You say that like LFL has any respect for the writers of the EU. This new movie alone has completely destroyed the continuity of the Clone Wars as set out in the novels and comics. This is my one fear concerning the inevitable sequel trilogy (trust me, once Lucas is dead, he will have no more power over the company's action; then we will know the real meaning of the phrase "milking it for all its worth"): it will likely cause such huge errors in the story that they will have no choice but to erase all the post-RotJ material (i.e., the vast majority of the good ones) from the timeline.

*long, heavy sigh*

When are people going to learn that petitions are useless? They're going to release whatever they're going to release, and our protests don't mean jack shit because for every person who refuses to buy it, there are ten others that jump at the opportunity. Nowadays the producers dictate to the consumers what they will get, instead of the consumers telling the producers what they want.

Sigh.....Have you seen The Superman II 'Donnor Cut' on DVD lately?  Even Richard Donnor thanks the fans who petitioned and emailed Warner Brothers for years to get them to finally put this version out, and finally it came to light in 2006.   People bitched and bitched and complained, and now it sits there on my DVD shelf, with all the scenes of Brando that were in a vault for 25 years.

I'm sorry did I type in code? And I'm sorry that I don't trust you, but I'll believe the man who owns the property in which this site is dedicated to and who is renowned for being lawyer heavy. If he has left explicit instructions for there to be no more feature films then its a safe bet there won't be any more feature films.

Or maybe I should just take the word of randoms on the internets.
