Yes, bootlegs indeed.

As for the official DVD release, tune in to theforce.net and thedigitalbits.com on Tuesday the 10th as that is the date that Lucasfilm is expected to make the official announcement about their release.

Expected to be September 21 actually. So not as far away as November would be. Probably see some marketing blitz in August/September with a second onslaught in November/December for Christmas shoppers.

Cool; that's my dad's birthday. Maybe I'll have to buy it for him to force him to finally convert to DVD.

Dare I ask why Sept. 5 is a "much cooler day"?

We all knew this was coming, its tough when Lucas dashes hopes at every turn, but thats life, lets just hope we can do to Lucas what everyone did to Spielberg when he released ET.
You must unlearn what you have learned.

And Greedo's shooting first.

I know I said this in another thread already, but this one has more readers.

It is now decided, I am going to have my VHS backed up to DVD. The best way to deal with it.

well everyone now that the word is out i have two things to say....

1 - i knew Lucas was going to f**k this up... not a surprise...

2 - i will be backing up my laserdisc's and for anyone who can prove to me that they own the original Star Wars trilogy i will also look into sending you a copy...

SIDE NOTE - Jay if there is anything wrong with what i have posted you have full rights to delete it. I do not plan on making any profit out of this, i just want people to have the best quality print of the film if they do plan on making a backup. Please get back to me on this.

I do apologize in advance if i have caused any problems but im sure this hits us all hard...

What would be the best way to prove it to you? I have VHS copies of the first trilogy in pan and scan, the faces edition in widescreen, and the dreaded SE in widescreen. Would a picture of me holding them suffice?

And for anyone who wants to join in the negative campaign with me, I'm reabbreviating the SE to DSE for Dreaded Special Edition. My feeble form of protest.

Hey Luke,
I want in on this as well. I own 6 copies on VHS and 2 copies on LD. (I do not have a DVD burner) How might I contact you?

I've got the original 'faces' trilogy in fullscreen that I bought years ago. However, with this sad news I will now be searching for a widescreen 'faces' set on eBay. I must have the originals in widescreen now.

You wanna know what's really bad about all this? The official Reuters article -- which is what is circulating the web and newspapers, et al -- does not even mention anything about this being the SE release at all. To get that information, you have to go to theforce.net, TDB.com, or starwars.com (among others). But, after reading a Reuters article, how many people will actually go and do that? None. Practically none, that is. So no one really knows that what they're getting is the 1997 SE instead of the originals which is how they make it sound by referring to it as "the classic trilogy". This is going to mislead so many people.

Ah yes, deceiving the consumers. What a great strategy George!

Not unexpected, however. But, it's not all his fault because the press release does state that it's the 1997 SE. Reuters just opted not to include that detail in their coverage of the announcement. But I doubt the Lucas camp will make any effort to correct that oversight.

Teehee, that was my favorite quote from that article as well, telex54. I'm really disappointed about this. Especially the "We love our fans, but this is about art and filmmaking." part is ridiculous. I mean what the heck does GL think this is about?! The whole point of this petition is to preserve a piece of art - the original versions of one of the most remarkable film trilogies in history.

And Bossk, I think you are right. But we can still do our part and inform the folks in our direct vicinity (friends, collegues, relatives, etc.) and spread the word. I still hope that this is some kind of marketing strategy to release the DSE first and then bring the original versions at some point in the future to make folks like us buy the films twice. But it is still extremely frustrating, especially after the goofed up release of the Indy DVDs here in germany (only Dolby 2.0 quality for the german soundtrack "digitally mastered for superior sound"), if they pull that one off with the DSE dvds, they can keep 'em.

Oh... and telex54, welcome to the boards.
