George Lucas wants to re-write history

I wouldn't be surprised if in the next DVD set GL starts re-editing and re-writing the documentaries to make it look like he had more of the story preplanned ahead of time than what he actually did. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts saying stuff like, "I always originally intended Darth Vader to be Luke's father, Leia to be Luke's sister, Greedo to shoot first, Hayden to be in ROTJ, and Jar Jar Binks to replace character of Chewbacca in the OT." Knowing him, he'll probably will actually do that the next DVD set. He'll say, "at the time, technology wouldn't allow me to make Chewbacca the way I wanted him, so I compensated for a man in a furrry suit." "Now I get go back and replace him with Jar Jar, the way I originally intended it." He'll say, "from my initial conception I already had the whole story made up in my head." I wouldn't be surprised if he starts hiring bounty hunters to find and destroy any documentaries and versions of star wars made prior to '97 after that. I remember somewhere he said he was looking forward to the time when all the VHS tapes have deteriorated beyond repair and all that remains is his DVD versions to live on forever. That was said prior to the release of the GOUT. But that will never happen to the future generations of SW fans, thanks to websites like this, the growing internet community, and the fact that people are moving away from corporate media to get their news and more towards forums and less biased news sources on the internet, most star wars fans will find the truth. Also, I think by the age of 17, most star wars fans will start to see the faults of the SE and the PT and see GL for who he is instead of what he wants us to think of him.

So what documentaries do you think will be in the next set? Will it be more of the Empire of Dreams crap? Where we see modern Lucas ideology, heavily edited crap to make him look good? Or do you think they will include a wide variety of documentaries from all time periods that will satisfy even the biggest fans?

He's already stated plenty of times that he always intended Greedo to shoot first.  <sarcasm>Amazingly enough they just couldn't get it to work while actually filming the scene.</sarcasm>  So I have no doubt he may actually start saying other things as well.

It won't matter though.  Only the hardcore fans are going to buy the next DVD release.  Everyone else is going to be satisfied with the 04 set.  Between that and all the existing publications that say the exact opposite of what he's starting to say and there's very little possibility of him being able to convince people that it was all planned out that way from the start.

I don't think you need to cite examples, as this thread should just read, "George Lucas has re-written SW history.'  Need we say anymore?

Is this really news to begin with? The OOT community has known this for 11 years.

I don't think Empire of Dreams was crap. It talked about a lot of the problems getting the films made, and we saw a lot of footage nobody even knew existed.

It was the only redeeming feature of that DVD set. ;)

Actually the footage shown was the same dailies David West Reynolds unearthed while viewing the lost cut materials.

All of that footage was already known back in 1996 and 1997 when his articles were published in the insider.  and many of the same scenes were in the shooting script.

Lucas already has shown a talent for selective memory when saying the media made up the whole 9 episodes thing.

I have all the magazine articles and transcripts in book form and magazine form, in official lucasfilm publications like the bantha tracks and the making of empire strikes back.

Never mind it is calling all those journalists like the one who covered star wars in 1977 for rolling stone liars.

He already called Pollock Dale who wrote skywalking a liar and he said all those things he wrote in his book.  He had them all on audiotape.  Calling the authors book nothing but a "national enquirer piece" because the Coppola stuff he said made Francis madder than hell. and Having his divorce spelled out was probably the breaking point for him.

Anything he cannot spin his own way or have ultimate control over he gets angry about.

They guy is a self labeled Machiavellian dictator over his films.  He admits he's a stubborn ass and wants things his own way, but says he won't apologize.

Because we put him on the map, without our money he'd be nothing. Also, he's treating us like 2nd class citizens.

Just wait.  Years from now when Lucas is dead, you'll see at least three "unauthorized biography" books come out telling what it was REALLY like to work with him.

Pending if any anti-Lucas writings exist by the time of his death. He could leave a clean record of himself.

John Baxter's Mythmaker is pretty critical actually, and he gets a lot of people on record saying things about Lucas that aren't exactly in the vein of the picture-perfect image he like to project. He's not as immune as some people think--he only is in his own company's PR. Which is only expected. But Star Wars fans don't venture far from non-LFL material, unfortunately.

Amen. It's time to vote with our wallets and stop giving this tyrant the funds to stroke his massive ego. I say we we rip everything he does from the internet and give it away for free on street corners. Don't buy that $200 Millennium Falcon from Hasbro, no matter how cool it looks - break it in the shop so no one can buy it!

Explain to your kids why you now hate George Lucas and by extension Star Wars so much. My little brothers like the PT until I challenged their perception. Kids aren't that stupid. All they need is guidance. Now my brothers see the trumped-up, firework display of a toy advertisement those movies are. They too are disgusted that Greedo now shoots first. Lets educate this new generation instead of creating new little cash drones for Lucas to feed on. Lets take back the history books and fill in some truth.

I shouldn't be bothered even typing this but.....

I don't have anything to do with Star Wars these days unless it's the OOT films so I.....

...You know what I was right the first time I'm not going to be bothered, the rest of your post is ludicrous. You need a reality check if you are suggesting people break store merchandise and influence kids to hate George Lucas and Star Wars.

Not to mention breaking store merchandise can land your ass in jail! ;)

I wouldn't go so far as to break store merchandise.  Simply don't buy it.  If it sits on the shelves and doesn't move, eventually it gets put on clearance.  The longer it sits, the more likely the store is to not buy it (or as much) next time.  Eventually you end up with a very small section of toys for Star Wars (remember how it use to take up the whole aisle in most stores, now it's just a small area of that aisle).

And you don't have to explain why you hate Lucas.  Just show them the originals and explain all the things that were changed and the supposed "reasons" for the changes.  That's usually enough to get people to say "Well, that's dumb".

As more and more people (who aren't hardcore fans) start seeing and hearing about what Lucas has done, more and more of them will just stop buying the merchandise.  At some point, Lucas will be forced to move on and do those "little films" that "no one wants to see" because no one will want to see or buy anything Star Wars anyway.

See, I disagree with anyone telling young kids you hate Lucas, cause it makes you sound like an old, bitter man.  It is like those athletes who complain that the athletes of today are making too much money.

There is nothing wrong with educating a young kid about the history of SW, especially showing him the OOT and explaining what has changed, but you have to let people eventually like what they like.

When I was growing up I loved Rocky III & IV alot more then Rocky I & II cause they were made for the MTV generation who grew up in the 80's.  My brother would always say how much Rocky I was his favorite but never got mad it me cause I seemed to shove off the movie cause I thought it was too slow, especially for a 10 year old kid like myself.  Fast Forward 20 years later, Rocky I is my favorite Rocky movie, let alone one of my favorite movies of alltime, and I realized Rocky III & IV are fun movies, but aren't in the same league as the Original.

Guys, let kids be kids, and don't get mad if they like the PT, the SE, as they get older, quality always wins in the end, and trust me, they will realize the OT is better then the PT.

The only History Lucas has changed is his legacy, He buried the oot and made three mediocre prequels and advanced the art of computer graphics.

Basically now a footnote in the history books as a technocrat and not a storyteller. The Real Trilogy is already largely forgotten because of the special editions and the prequels. Mr Lucas legacy is indeed tainted.

To original trilogy fans it is a fate worse than seeing their beloved creator die, he went over to the dark side and now wants to destroy star wars.

He is currently wrecking Indiana Jones and has already ruined THX 1138 and American Graffiti by added cgi.

Graffiti was a single shot and almost nobody notices but i do. The same thing happened recently with the broadcast of raiders.

I am surprised I was able to get Willlow on dvd without stupid cgi.

Next thing he has to wreck is his student films, maybe he will go back and add Jar Jar to them.
