Wind Waker issue - in trying to get Makar to accompany me to the Wind Temple I'm having an incredibly hard time. I play the Wind God's aria for him, but all he does is tell me to keep his practicing a secret. I'm using the left trigger to target him and it's still happening. Thoughts?

You've tried the control song?

Howdy Tip.

Are you talking about the Command Melody? No, I haven't. It wasn't necessary when getting Medli to go to the Earth Temple, and the walkthrough's I've read give no indication. Is this something I should check?

Oh, I see. You haven't even gotten him to the temple yet. I misunderstood.

That's weird since it's the Wind God's aria that causes him to join you . . . Did you talk to the big tree guy before finding Makar? (I also assume you finished the Earth Temple which I think you need to do first.)

I didn't speak to the tree again. Yes, I solved the Earth temple first. Very frustrating.

All I can think is that you need to speak to him. I remember that when you do he gives you a message to go looking for Makar.

Still nada. I spoke with the tree and asked the questions that were available. Makar's in the waterfall, I swing in, we talk, he plays, I conduct the Wind God's Aria (^,^,v,>,<,>) and he asks me to keep his practicing a secret. I'm ready to go back to the Wind Temple to make certain I've got the melody right, but I've consulted several walk-throughs and they all indicate the tune I'm playing.

Wait, you did go to the Wind Temple's entrance first, right? You have to play in front of that rock and talk to the ghost dude. You'll know if you did by going to your inventory screen. One of the colored notes should be the Wind God's aria if you got it. If you didn't, head to Gale Isle.

Hey. Problem solved. When I got home a few minutes ago I remembered that the first time I went to the island I did NOT talk to the Deku Tree, and on subsequent tries when I did I did NOT go into the Wind Temple to awaken the sage first. So this time I woke the sage, talked to the tree, THEN played for Makar. This worked.

Thanks for the help. It is appreciated. Love this game.

The PS2 was my first CD based system, the first one I had was a hand me down slim model, and it died. I immediately went out and bought a brand new one. But the fact that the guy who gave it to me only had it two years before giving it to me (and I know the guy really well, he takes great care of his stuff) makes me kind of weary about these modern systems (my old NES is still alive and kicking, this is what I am used to when it comes to game consoles. Over twenty years of gaming, and my PS2 was my first ever experience with the death of a console). I do not like the idea of having to replace the things every three years or so. I'd really like to get a 360 sometime within the next year, but I have heard a lot of about the red ring of death.

So, for Xbox and Xbox 360 owners out there, what kind of life spans have you gotten out of these systems?

Also, if I were to start looking at 360s, what size harddrive should I get it with? Is the harddrive that important?

The 360 is fine if you get the updated "Falcon" 360. It has the smaller CPU so it runs cooler. Here is a link to help you if you plan on buying a 360. It will ensure you purchase the updated 360 with the cooler running chip.

I use my 360 for playing games and the 20GB is more than enough for just gaming. If you would like the ability to download new game videos and game demos then I would recommend  getting a 360 with a HDD. Getting a 360 with a HDD also allows you to download new "map packs" and other Down loadable content(DLC) that you would not be able to without the HDD. I download the occasional demo, they are usually around 1.2GB in size, but after you play them for a week you just delete them. After you "set-up" the 360 your HDD will have approximately 13GB of free space after it is configured. IF you plan to download Movies or TV shows I could see getting the new 60GB model, but only if you planned to use it for a media system. Also, supposedly around September the new 60GB model will be $299.

A demo for The Force Unleashed came out today for Xbox Live and Playsation Network. The force powers are fun but theres no dismemberment (loss of limbs)... The gameplay felt pretty bland. The new technologies DMM and Euphoria were pretty cool but the "chaos" felt muted.

This is probably the most on topic thread for this. My headcrab arrived today along with my Black Mesa and Aperture Science mugs. Thanks again LJ for tipping me off to the existence of plush headcrabs. My wife doesn't exactly understand why I spent money on this ugly little thing that gives her the creeps, but I absolutely love the little guy. My only complaint is he seems a bit darker than he should be, but I knew this from the picture at the Valve store before I bought it and was still very excited to buy it anyway. In the game, especially in the original Half-Life, they are more the pale whitish color of a plucked raw chicken. Other than the color, this thing is perfect, I really like that it has poseable limbs. The Black Mesa mug is pretty cool too. I really wish they would have had Black Mesa t-shirts, like the one Alyx is wearing in Half-Life 2.

So Force Unleashed sucked huh?

I hope nobody buys it and it is a wake up call for Lucas.

Fat chance at that since he lives in his own little dream world where the prequels were so much better than the original trilogy and truer to his vision, LOL.

Clone Wars sucked and now Force Unleashed sucks.  So when is that Indiana Jones game coming out and will it be better than the crystal shit.

For lack of a better word it did. It looked promising but it really was a let down from what I played in the demo. I think I may still rent it to play through it but its definitely  not worth purchasing.

I cant believe Im saying this but I didnt think Clone Wars was terrible it wasnt anything special but for what it is ( a kids cartoon movie) I thought it was alright. Sky did you not like the entire movie or were there a lot of small things that you didnt like about clone wars?

I think Sky said he had no intention of ever seeing it. When he said it sucked, he probably based that on the vast majority of reviews that state as much.

Ever since I read that the Force Unleashed was going to have a PS2 released (which means I have a console that can play it), I had kind of hoped it would turn out to be surprisingly good, but it doesn't sound like that will be the case. Oh well.

Well not only does the game feel like a let down from what Ive played but the Wii and PS2 versions were developed by a different company (Krome Studios) and do not have the new "revolutionary" technologies in them, DMM nor Euphoria. However the Wii has a "Duel Mode" which is not on any other console and has an extra number of levels compared to the PS3, 360 and PS2, so it seems the PS2 really got the short end of the stick.

The last 2 relevant games to come out on the ps2 were Final Fantasy XII and God of War II.

The system after that was all but officially dead in favor of Sony marketing the PS3 and BLU Ray.

and except for being a Blu Ray movie player that system is a huge failure which only saving grace is Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots, now that the Xbox 360 is getting Final Fantasy XIII at the same time as the PS3 Sony is fucked.

They moved Millions of ps1's with Final Fantasy VII by it being an exclusive title.

The one thing that would have motivated me to buy a PS3 was Final Fantasy XIII exclusivity.

Except 360 is better on a standard definition tv and you don't have to be in the early adopters HD camp to bend over and take it up the ass when the format fails. Dvd is here to stay.

So, I got an SNES the other day.  W00T!  This is a trade-off with my friend, whom I also bought one.  Birthday presents for both o us.  Right now, I have (this is actually his, but nonetheless):

Spider-Man/Venom: Separation Anxiety.  Not a bad beat-em-up, only tought as Spider-Man.  Venom is so much better.

Super Mario All-Stars/World one cart:  Coming in the mail soon.

Mario Paint: Also coming soon.

Megaman X: Just old-school megamany goodness.

Super Star Wars original & TESB: Well, what can I say?  TESB is impossible, and I just barely beat the first level of the original.  These games are as hard as they say!

The SNES will always be to me the greatest system ever made. The first time I saw one in action at my friends house I was dumbfounded. The only game he had was Super Mario World, and I just couldn't get over the detailed graphics and the amazing colors. The way Mario's hat would fly up in the air a bit as he fell and the dust that came up from his feet as he made a quick stop. The characters were so detailed and they had such depth to them. I remember I'd dream about getting my own SNES and wake up to realize it was only a dream and I'd feel so disappointed. When I finally got my own I was really excited. The SNES era was the hight of gaming for me, I can never imagine getting immersed in a video game again like I did when playing A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox, or Super Metroid. Even the N64 and the novelty of playing as these characters for the first time in 3D wasn't quite equal to the excitment of going from playing Zelda in 8bit to playing Zelda in 16bit.

And yeah, the Super Star Wars games are crazy hard. One of my buddies bought a GameGenie, and the first thing we did with it was stay up late beating Super Star Wars straight through from start to finish. As hard as Super Star Wars and Super Empire Strikes Back were (Super ROTJ was a breeze in comparison), the NES counter parts made them feel really easy. Empire Strikes Back for the NES was one of my favorite games on the system, countless hours wasted, and I never managed to get off of Dagobah.

I actually found SSW:TESB to be much easier than the first SSW. I've not played SSW:ROTJ, though. It's so great when Vader says, "All too easy" in the fights.

Yeah, I'm still stuck on SNES and Super Mario World. I'm still plugging away on my own hack of SMW. When I get a demo out, I'll let you guys know here so you can play.

Screw being a fan of Drangonballz, if you are a fan of awesome games I would highly recommend Chrono Trigger. Fantastic game.

So now that I've gotten DosBox reinstalled on my computer, I've been revisiting my childhood quite a bit. See, when I was a kid, I didn't have an NES or SNES (my first console was actually an N64). Unlike my friends, I grew up on old-school DOS games (shareware mostly), like Duke Nukem in his side-scroller days, as well as Commander Keen (still a great platformer). But lately I've been playing a game that I don't think I've played since I was 8 or 9 years old, if even that old. It's a spin-off of Sierra's "The Incredible Machine" game called "Sid & Al's Incredible Toons". If you can find it anywhere, I suggest you do. It's highly addictive.

Chrono Trigger is getting a re-release on the Nintendo DS.  As far as the screenshots i have seen it is a direct port no graphical or sound upgrades.  Supposedly there is a new Dungeon bonus level, Not sure what they are going to use the stylus for.  Plus i would not be suprised if the game got a beastiary like the final fantasy games.

Now then real question is will it be a new japanese to english translation more faithful than the original release, or have the slowdown problem Prevalent in the US PS1 port uprade unlike the Japan release.

The US release of final fantasy VI (aka III on the snes) on the PS1 also had bad slowdown.  2 good reasons to own a snes, A third would be because it had secret of mana which has never been re-released.

The third part in the Chrono Trilogy will probably now never be made since Sakaguchi left SquareEnix.  He has said Blue Dragon is what he wanted Crono Trigger 3 to be.  That game is not even as good as Chrono Cross which sucks unlike the first installment, Trigger which was awesome mix of both sci fi and fantasy.

Looks like Lucasarts has some serious issues getting lightsaber coloring correct in all aspects of entertainment.

Quote taken from a review for The Force Unleashed

"One would think LucasArts would have paid closer attention to quality control on a game in development for approximately four years. Forgivable are some sparse jitters and lag considering the sheer amount of destruction going on at any given time at the hands of the Force and DMM and how great the game looks – and sounds -- in high definition. Unforgivable is the Secret Apprentice wielding a blue lightsaber during multiple cut-scenes yet using a red one in the gameplay segments surrounding those scenes. This error sticks out like a sore thumb on more than one occasion and detracts from otherwise strong CGI animation."

Maybe it was a deliberate creative decision, lol.

Anyway So that would not be the first time people have messed up the saber colors.  The Revenge of the Jedi Teaser poster by Drew Struzan had vader holding a blue saber and Luke a red. He can hardly be blaimed that all ILM gave him were black and white stills from empire strikes back. Still had he even done his research on the first movie where Kenobi has a blue sword and Vader a Red he might have not made the blunder.

Had the videocasette come out at this point in time when he sketched the poster i do not know.  Maybe in late 1982 tape players were expensive or something.  And Star Wars was only out as a rental only tape.

Since i have not played the Full Force Unleashed game maybe those scenes were flashback scenes when he was a good guy before being taken on as vaders apprentice after vader killed his father.  I don't know if when he was a boy and a jedi padawan having a blue saber would make sense.  But if it is when he is older working for vader it makes little sense.  Unless he is doing a contract killing or something and wants it pinned on the Jedi only sith use red sabers.  Maybe a red saber would draw suspicion on Vader. Only Vader and the Emperor are the Sith left alive in the universe.
