You answer and protest with your money aka your wallet by closing it tightly and never giving pukas another dime until the oot is restored.
The fans made him rich to begin with by paying to see the films, you don't bite the hand that feeds you. Nor do you anger your core fanbase by giving them the finger and saying obstinately, i'll do what i want like a 2 year old.
Films and their art become a part of public record and history, if that was not the case then the library of congress would'nt be spending our tax dollars to preserve them. George Lucas is largely erasing history and rewriting it by denying a real restoration. Which would make the original versions viable for theatrical exebition as well as for home video.
i'll address your points in slightly reverse order:
first off, i am 100% behind the idea of preservation of course, and preserving movies intact for future generations etc
and with that part, yeah its 'wrong' not to save them, but its still his property (or the studios,etc)...ok so much for that..
1) protest with our money? how has that stopped anything?................in fact, pretty much everyone here on this board, has used their
money, and purchased multiple versions of these movies, up to and including the 'hated SE' versions, if not just to get the GOUT versions on dvd?
how much protest was there at theaters when each SE version came out? or even when the prequels came out? (another topic)....not a whole
heck of a lot., in fact most of those movies / dvds broke many records.....................i don't think there was a whole lot of protest going on then..
.......... i don't know how i found this board, but one day while doing a search, i came across something about preserving
the original trilogy, and laserdisc rips, x0 etc........and that was a few years back, i lurked for awhile, and disappeared, only when i came across
adywans edit, did i come back, join, etc................my point is that, besides here, and maybe some other fan sites, there hasn't been a whole
heck of a lot of protest online either going on now besides this board........................................whether or not fans caused Lucas to reconsider putting the GOUT on bonus discs is a moot point.................................it still added revenue to the stream of star wars releases............ and it was 'good enough' for the majority of fans that wanted
the originals in an easier to find/play format than laserdisc or vhs..................
2) once again, given the record making results of the last series of movies, the merchandise, the continued interest in star wars characters etc....
doesn't it appear he is indeed successfully continuing on with HIS vision of what HIS universe, and characters (as schizophrenic as it might seem) should
be, and what they should be doing?
there really aren't that many core fans are there...(the ones that actually saw the originals in the theaters)........i do know there's more fans
out there NOW (and not just at TFN, which i also visit)..............that still maintain an interest in all things star wars............an outrcy from a small
group, while admirable, is sure to be drowned out the rest of the current generation of fans............and whats wrong with that? people are
growing up the the prequels, the SE versions, etc...................and are perfectly happy to go along with those, and all the new material after
that...............................................in the case of writing off the 'core fans' to win over new ones, it might have be a necessary condition
for all the future releases, projects etc to be made........................i don't think we'll ever see Lucasfilm go bankrupt in our lifetime, or ever,
as long as there are 'fan's around.................................whether its old disgruntled ones, or new generation ones....
you'll have to come up with better reasons, or a better plan, to vilify Lucas anymore................because our voices are being completely
drowned out with $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
