I've been working on an avisynth script for the movie, and it sure has a LOT of problems.
I'm trying to do stabilizing and some dirt removal, ideally you would have to do everything on a scene by scene (or frame by frame) basis, but that will probably be too much work for me. However even with an overall script, I think it is much improved.
Example of dirt removal:
Unfiltered:

Filtered:

Some frames have writing on them, I will repair/clean at least some of them by hand.

After:

Some frames a very damaged:

Some frames have a very strange 'ghosting' effect... I don't know what might have caused this. Looks like some bad temporal smoothing?? Almost impossible to fix I think (yes, it is on the original dvd and not caused by my filtering).
