Well i guess the difference with my encodes is that they will be true 24fps, have all the commentaries and ANH will have an extra audio track from the DVD-rom starwars.com site exclusive commentary & ESB will have an extra 5.1 track using the laserdisc audio with Boba's original voice so you'll have a choice. I've done too much work to forget about these now

Sounds fantastic Adywan. You do first class work and I would love to check these out.

One question though. What is the source of your encodes. The German h264 broadcasts or the UK.

they are from the HV releases, so i'm not sure what source they used. The sky broadcasts were very soft and these look sharper than those ( i have the sky esb on my sky HD box still). I didn't want to spend much time on these because it was originally going to be set just for me so i used the English sources i had. i have the OT German broadcasts and they are a bit higher quality encodes but you can expect that with a file size twice that of the English versions. This is just a quick project because i don't want to spend any more time on this that will distract me from doing ESB:R

But i think i may hold off releasing these now for a while. I need to do something a bit different or it will be a waste of time. I may do some basic colour correction on the OT. I may replace the Emperor in ESB with the original and return the Anakin force ghost in ROTJ to that of Sebastian Shaw.

Sterling effort Adywan. The test DVD-5 worked fine on my PAL 60GB PS3 which has the latest firmware (2.41 i think). Really nice looking transfer.

Now Ady, I know these won't be customised in any way but, please can you delete the few frames of Han shooting at Greedo, I never ever ever want to see that clip again.

Cheers.

the player is not important, neither is the format..

as long as it is available in some kind of digital format, we all win.

Don't worry. i was just messing about with the HD-DVD owners. I'm looking into ways of making a HD-DVD DVD-9 version of these. Problem is that no one i know has a HD-DVD anymore (my mate just sold his and got a PS3) so there is no way for me to test the authored disc for compatibility

adywan,

don't worry about the HD DVD part,

i have that covered..

(i'll post a sample when i'm ready)...

--------------------------------------------------

meanwhile... if you're not familiar....start reading up on video conversion tools,

and threads (lots of info) -> hd dvd to  DL dvd -> http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=705146

--------------------------------------------------

digital conversion stuff.. everybody needs to start getting up to date on this stuff,

i'm pretty sure all the files, etc, should be high definition from here on out, and

you should all become familiar with how to manipulate them, convert them,

merge etc............................i'm surprised at how little has been done with

high definition video, and what little interest there has been so far with

the releases..........................................

------------------------------------------------------

first of all, if you run windows XP, get the UDF 2.5 driver, its free.........................

(also you can find used xbox hd dvd's drive for as little as US$50 ebay/etc............)

install the driver.........................by the way, i used imgburn to burn ady's test...............->

-----------------------------------------------------

now you see these files:

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/6966/testavhcdpw3.jpg

------------------------------------------------------

(alternately you can 'bust' the .iso using isobuster, and just extract that one file, instead of wasting a DVD-r for it)

you only need the .mts under -> stream

copy it over to your hard drive..

----------------------------------------------------

now use tsmuxer to 'break' open those files and see these

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8461/tsmuxersy3.jpg

extract all files

-----------------------------------------------------------

from here on out, you have a TON of choices,

use SUPER (freeware), and convert to any format, avi (.h264), .mov (.h264), etc...will retain the 24fps,

or if you're adventurous...............convert to MPG2 (23.97fps)................

---------------------------------------------------------

take the resulting files, and use mkvmerge

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2686/mkvmergeii9.jpg

for the final .mkv file...

-------------------------------------------------------

i will post a link to it shortly................................ 'same' quality, both ac3 5.1, and stereo commentary on track 2...

-------------------------------------------------------

and as a bonus, if you listen to the commentary....you will know what this 'spoiler' picture is referring to.....do you see them, they're tiny!!!!!!!!!!

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/8259/bonusxwingsqv2.jpg

sorry ady....bluray and the monopoly they have will never be acceptable, and will always be way too expensive.......(yes,

even with the ps3 price drop..sheeshhhhhhhhh)....................

here's the post on converting .h264 to hd dvd

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13940881&postcount=2934

basically..

=================================================================

Here is an outline of what I did to get a H264 encoded file into a HD-DVD formatted DVD disk.

Software used
-------------------------------------------------
AVISynth, I used version 2.5.7
MEGui from Doom9 forum
DGmpgdec I used version 1.5 rc5
DGavcdec (for H264 sources)
tsMuxeR from Doom9 forum
DGDecode.dll, Decomb521.dll copy to AVIsynth-plugins folder
h264info

The start is different depending on what kind of file you are starting with. Most of my recordings are mpeg2 and usually film source. So this is how I have done it.

Load the mpeg2 file into the latest version of DGIndex and save project. This will demux the audio and create a .d2v file that you use with MEgui X-264 encoder from Doom9 forum. You need to create a text file with notepad saved with a .avs extention to use AVISynth. Here is a sample--

LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5.7\plugins\DGDecode.dll")

LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5.7\plugins\Decomb521.dll")

mpeg2source("F:\Yourfile.d2v", upConv=1)

Telecide(1,guide=1,vthresh=0)

Decimate(cycle=5)

FieldDeinterlace(Full=False,threshold=15,dthreshold=9)
ConvertToYV12()

This script will de-interlace and convert the film back to progressive frames. I found that doing this makes the motion much smoother, but about doubles the encode time. I am trying to remove the 3-2 pulldown in other ways, but nothing is as smooth as this script.

Load .avs text file you created into MEgui and if you get no error messages, you should see a frame of the source file you are going to encode. Close video frame and use the bitrate calculator in the tools menu to find the bitrate use the audio file that was created by DGindex and for a double layer DVD disk I use a file size of 7.8 GB. Select the SA-HD-DVD profile and set the fourCC to avc1 in MEgui. Select RAWAVC for the output format, you will get a .264 file. For more info on using MEgui see the Doom9 forum. Two pass file encoding for a 2 hour mpeg2 file takes about 18 hours on my overclocked core2duo computer.

After encoding load the .264 file into h264info and select 3-2 pulldown and run to get a 29.97 version of the encoded file as MF6+ only likes 29.97.

Then load the video file just created along with the audio file created by DGindex, noting the time delay in the file name into tsMuxeR. click on audio file and enter the time delay in the file name into tsMuxeR audio delay window. Then mux into .ts file.
=========================================================

not for the faint of heart.............................and yes,

this is going from mpg->.h264 (so if the source is already .h264 no problems)..

the fps have to be changed, i'm working on it..

details, details..............

But my versions won't be the same as the files already posted so you won't be able to do a HD-DVD conversion just yet. Mine will have colour correction and editing work done + extra audio tracks.

I'm starting the first movies (ANH) colour correction encode tomorrow. I need to clear out my hard drives first. Each encode is huge, around 250gb, so i need a lot more space than i have already for each one.

What version of AOTC is that screencap from? There is hell of a lot of compression artefacts, which are not from Jpeg compression. Is that from the DVD or the AVCHD?

lol. I can remember people saying the exact same thing when DVD came out. they all complained about the price of the players, burners and media. My first DVD burner cost me £450. Now look how cheap you can buy them for. The same will happen with Blu-Ray. Don't forget, it has only just won the war. Prices of burners have dropped over £300 in the last 6 months here. You can buy one now for about £140 and media for about £6. that price will continue to drop as the demand grows. you have to face it, Blu-Ray is here to stay.

I'm really surprised just how negative you are towards Blu-Ray because of your hatred for Sony, yet you support Microsoft's Xbox & HD-DVD when Microsoft are a hell of a lot worse than Sony will ever be. I'm not a great lover of Sony, and never will be, but i preferred the format of Blu-Ray right from the start over HD-DVD. I don't care who things are made or developed by as long as its good. I'm just glad i went with the PS3 over the X-BOX360, even though my mates all said i was mad and that it was crap. We all bought our consoles within a few months of each other and i'm the only one who got a Ps3 and the only one who has had no problems whatsoever with my console. Out of 7 of them that got the 360, 6 have had the red ring of death. 2 have had it again with the replacement. now the warranted has ran out they have a dead console.  Not good that especially when Microsoft knew about the 360's problems but deny that its a fault. Needless to say all but 1 have now got a PS3 and will never touch Microsoft consoles ever again.

I just wish we didn't have to have these damn format wars all the time when something new comes out. It's always the consumer that gets stung.

adywan:

1) i need to be a little clearer about what i'm doing.................a couple of things................HD DVD versions of the

wookiegroomer encodes.........................................AND future HD DVD encodes of YOUR versions....so both basically..

hopefully by then, i will have a much better handle on conversion / burning etc...........................

2) the image was a capture from your source, scaled down, and jpg'ed.....not to be indicative of quality (of course)

3) granted microsoft is evil..............................but sony is more evil......so it's a choice of a lesser evil...........anyways,

i waited a long long time before i got the xbox 360, so i got the 'newer' chip, and have NEVER had 1 problem, glitch,

lockup or anything ever...................................then again, i'm not a 'hardcore' gamer anymore, so i rarely play games anymore...

(which i hear a lot of ps3 people say also, since they really don't have any games for it either...................pretty sad right?)....

the hd dvd i picked up (just like laserdiscs).....because its cheaper, the discs are cheaper....(and even

though i could actually buy the bluray drive etc............why bother), i have at least 50+ hd/bluray rips downloaded already (40 % - 720p,

40 % - 1080p , and 20 % are FULL bluray rips)....so its not like i want to pay the RIP OFF prices for crappy bluray movies that dont even

deserve to be highdef in the first place.....most of these are action/sci-fi/adventure movies................and then i have a small library of 30+

hd dvd movies, that are all new that cost half that price or less.........................and of course there's some movies that are hd dvd exclusive,

that WILL NEVER come out on bluray either........................................................all the other high def content i have has been HDTV rips...

so they aren't on either format.....................

that's why a neutral .mkv, .avi or whatever container is the best for that purpose, no file size limits, no framerate limits, etc ...etc....

yes from a distribution, user perspective, not everybody's up to speed, has players, software, or the right hardware to watch..

but you yourself said hardware is getting cheaper......................and the US is switching to digital tv next year, so eventually everyone

will be able to view these..

it's better to be future proofed now..

again, you need a huge gateway movie to get everybody to step up to high definition....................i'm still wondering why there

is so little interest on this board??????.................................i'm sorry but vhs, and now even laserdisc/dvd have been superseced...

it's time to move on people..................................................make the leap..................come over to the 'high-def' side........................

this is great news thanks ady1,  i have been slowly archiving all my HD mkv's to blu compatible avchd, i have the 720p avchd versions of the OT and was having comatibitlity issues due to the differing framerates so started work on my own versions in 1080p from the same versions that you are using for your encodes, but was about to give up as they would either be

a -oversized

b -would play on my samsung uk player but not on the US ps3

i read that its down the framerates 25fps wont play on a US ps3 23.97 works perfectly not sure about 24 but that would be perfect if it did

i cant get the sample page to open but im sure i read that someone got it to work on an ntsc ps3 so i have my fingers crossed for this set and if possible please keep the commenataries as that would be so cool (i could barely fit the normal soundtrack on lol!)

CANT WAIT!!! thanks again for all your hard work

I believe the saga that's up right now is 24 fps, unless they fudged it some way.  It even displays as such on my LCD ("1080p/24" when being fed a 24 fps signal).

As I've got Wookiegroomer's full 12-13 gb saga as well, I'm going to hold off on the remaining films in AVCHD until Ady ups his versions.  It'll be nice to have the color at least a little better than what they are (blue Hoth is driving me nuts!!!).

O.T. or No T., baby!

As long as this isn't from 25fps PAL encodes, I'm happy.  I can't stand the speed-up.

And btw...now you know someone with an HD DVD player. :)
