the best plan of action is to have 1 master version: 1080p

everything after that is just downconverts.....it makes life a lot easier for those that

want the best quality.....................................i'm sure someone will take the time to

do all the downconversions to other formats, and disc sizes................

its just easier to have 1 master version, and everyone else can pick and choose

which version they will use, and not have to waste time downloading a huge

file they will never need/use..

You could stick the master versions on an external HDD somewhere and when Blu-Ray media/burners/etc becomes more prevalent, there y'go! For now, DVD-9s would be great.

P.S. Does anyone seriously know why DVD-9s are still so expensive? Is it just because they can charge whatever they want? Are they harder/more costly to make? It just doesn't seem reasonable to me to charge ten times more for the same sort of basic disc.

1080p will be awesome. i've only got a 720p screen but I'm bound to upgrade in the next year or so. presumably it will be available in mkv format. this seems to be the format of choice for these monster files.

dunno why u guys bother with discs with their fail rate and compatibility issues. just hook up a pc/laptop to your tele.

Because I can't hand a 12 GB avi to a friend as a present. :-P

Honestly, I still have all the versions of ANHR (well, the NTSC versions), and I probably will have all of the versions of ESBR as well.  Heck, I'll probably burn a DVD-9 Blu Ray disc even though I don't have a Blu Ray player.  I know I'm tempted to for Ady's unaltered versions right now!

well not really. I will have the 1080p master and be doing all the coverts myself. I will have extras to add to the DVD versions and i like to create everything myself, like the menus etc. That way i can make sure the quality is the same throughout the releases. just having 1 file released isn't the way to go. not everyone wants the 1080p version. The versions i will be doing is:

DVD-5 PAL & NTSC
DVD-9 PAL & NTSC
XVID
1080p AVCHD (anyone wanting just the movie can rip the m2ts from the disc and convert it to a ts stream without having to re-encode with freeware tools that wil play on your PC. Takes a few minutes)
And when media & Burners become cheaper i will be doing a Full Blu-Ray version

That covers everyone (apart from HD-DVD owners. But if i want to cover dead formats i may as well make a Betamax/ VHS version too. lol)

What about hard drive failures? I've had my fair share of failures with those things and lost so much stuff i prefer to back up my stuff on Taiyo Yden DVDs and store them in an air tight container. At least if you use decent media like Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden you'll have great computability and they will last probably longer than a hard drive, and no chance of accidental erasure either. And pen drives are unreliable. even the best makes have problems. You have more chance of losing impostant data the higher capacity drives are.

please do a 1080p mkv version. I hope other peeps want this as well.

like everything you should back stuff up to dvd or an external drive. and consider replacing drives every few years before they die.

I had so many good brands dvd-rs fail on me. plus they take up so much space and are slow and i always lost my marker pen to label them!

Exactly.  They are course, and rough and they get everywhere.

Haha.

I've had externals fail on me before. I feel like there's no solid way to back up anything anymore. o_o

I have said that you can get the AVCHD version and rip out the m2ts file and convert it to a .ts file that will play on your PC and will be exactly the same as a .mkv version. It takes a few minutes with free software and the quality is exactly the same because you are not re-encoding the file.

Well they couldn't have been good brands /dye. Just because a product has a well known name doesn't mean that the product is any good. I always used to use Ritek dye based media because they were always regarded as the best but hell of a lot of discs that have never been played are now unreadable because the dye has degraded. The Taiyo yuden ones are more expensive but i have ones that i recorded 6 years ago that scans show have not degraded at all. I haven't found another brand that haven't in some way degraded. Even Verbatim aren't always the best. It all depends on the dye they use.

Huh??  What language are you speaking there man????

But, for me a 1080 version is pretty cool. The only blu-ray player I have is right here on my laptop. But, it does have a full 1080 res 18.5" widescreen, which does look bloody amazing.

Just wtched Batman begins on Blu-ray and it was just beautiful. All I need now is a big f**k off TV, but with two kids and little roaming hands all over the place, not a good idea...hence, my little laptop.:)

A 1080P version would be amazing!  But just remember, it's probably going to make us all clamour for you to re-do ANH in 1080P after seeing this one ;) .

Yummy. With a full 1080p 46" screen and Bluray-station to play it on, i would be sorted to get the best viewing experience for my fav. StarWars film.

I can quite honestly state that a 1080p version, or any HD versions of ANH:R will never happen. I never want to do that movie again

On a related note...once you are done with the movies, would you ever want to watch them again?

I thought you said that Empire was a more difficult job with the massive blue tint and all.

but it's a new challenge.

besides we already have a great version of anhr.

let him finish the other 5 films and then badger him about it when he's 60!

I would be willing to wait for 1080p, been out for about 32 hours and things just keep getting better ! Is the DVD9 version of ANHR still the best in terms of quality or is something else in the works I just skimmed through the last couple of pages so I thought I would ask ?

Author
Time

Nope, the DVD-9 of ANH is the best you can - and it seems, will ever be able to - get, which isn't saying anything bad about it since it looks absolutely fantastic.

And I'm damn excited about this 1080p ESB.  Why must all the great projects take so long to finish?

Author
Time

Thanks ChainsawAsh I feel the same about ESB in 1080p.

I have one concern about an eventual Blu-Ray version of ESB. I have been told that recordable Blu-Rays are unable to play on Blu-Ray players. This was one of the big gripes that came from the HD-DVD camp back when the war was on. Essentially that Blu-Ray "Rs" were only useful as data discs in PCs due to a deliberate lack of support as recorded movie discs on players (something about combatting piracy) Stupid Sony...

Ady, is it possible to see some 1080p  footage that you have completed so far?
