Wouldn't it be awesome if the Blu-Ray of Star Wars was like this...?

or even like this...

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=374

with all the different versions, so if someone doesn't like the changes the director made, they still have the original on another disc? The special part is that Ridley Scott didn't like the original version, yet he's still putting out with his Director's Cut. George Lucas, if you're reading this, I know you prefer your new versions, but please, put out the originals like how Ridley Scott did this release of Blade Runner.

Who else would die if Star Wars was released like this?

a couple of things,

ridley scott has a totally different attitude than george lucas..

also, (except for the final, and workprint versions).....all these versions have been available before,

so its not that great........i have them on laserdisc....and also they've been on dvd...[and yes i bought

this new 5 disc collection, and also on HD DVD]....

there are people that think the 'new' final cut is basically pulling a 'lucas' by adding things aren't

needed back into the original bladerunner.......so whats you're point?

all the OOT versions are still out there on laserdisc, and the new versions are on dvd......

and you think they should be re-released again?

Well i for one think they should be released again but only on one condition. They release all versions on blu-ray like they have with close encounters & Blade Runner set (unless you're like me and live in the UK and all we got was the lousy Blade Runner "final cut" edition, no box set.) We have HD LCD & Plasma TVs now. no longer are we watching movies on crappy old crt20"+ TV's. Laserdiscs look shit on a big screen and the GOUT being non anamorphic 4:3 is a joke. Having the 2004 set as the only available quality (if you can call it that) version is a pure insult to Star Wars fans. If others can do it then why can't GL with the biggest movie saga of all time?

I wonder, negative1, if you would be so against Star Wars being released in Hi-Def in all versions if HD-DVD had won the format war? I think not.

Funny I was thinking exactly the same thing the other day when watching The Final Cut on blu-ray (imported it into UK from Amazon.com). This has to be one of the best box sets ever in terms of features and sheer quality. And four different cuts of Blade Runner as well all in HD. Ridley obviously has his finger on the pulse, unlike Luca$! He also seems excited by the enthusiasm for his films as well with different introductions to each cut of the film, and yet another audio commentary. My projector only accepts the 560p HD but even at this resolution the final cut looks simply stunning - better than I remember it ever looking.

It's ironic... back in the early 90s Lucasfilm could do no wrong in terms of releases, and where way ahead of the pack - back then the THX Star Wars Laserdiscs got rave reviews everywhere, especially the collectors edition released in 1993 (I think). This was when Lucas still seemed to care about the quality of his original cuts. That plus the release of the superb Anthology soundtrack boxed set... ahhhh those where the days! What went wrong....

If Star Wars was released like this I think everyone would be happy, and George would be even richer - everyone wins! I much prefer the original cuts of the films (though Adywan's version of A New Hope is my preferred version at present), but after seeing the 12GB HD versions of the Original trilogy recently it's impossible to go back to the GOUT versions now.

- I don't quite understand where you are coming with this statement Negative 1. Aren't you planning to transfer an original 35mm print of Empire?!? Surely this means you want the original in better quality than is currently the case? Perhaps I'm missing your point - lol!

sorry if the quotes are out of order..............that's kind of my point, if you want SOME version in HD , you can FIND it, if you look

(especially on these boards).............................

lets look at the 7 versions (2 of which are not here, the san diego preview, and the US broadcast version).......

ok, so they're in HD, so what? 1) final cut - call it ridley scottism - pulls a lucas, and puts in extra stuff that doesn't need to be there...

2) workprint.............................yes i know what it is, and why is it here again?   3) us theatrical , finally for purists....ok, fine....it works for me

4) international .........................not needed, but ok its here if that's what you saw......5) directors cut...............yet another version with major changes - another novelty like fanedit from ridley..

so we have, what 1 version that actually needs to be in HD..............and four others that change/point out problems/unnecessary additions or subtractions..

how is that worthwhile?

It's ironic... back in the early 90s Lucasfilm could do no wrong in terms of releases, and where way ahead of the pack - back then the THX Star Wars Laserdiscs got rave reviews everywhere, especially the collectors edition released in 1993 (I think). my point exactly...........................THEY ARE AVAILABLE, and dirt cheap also................the sound quality is awesome, and yes, even though

i have a 'small' 32 inch widescreen............laserdisc images are sharp and clear for me.....(ok sue me, i have slightly lousy vision).............

they are quality releases!!!

if you actually read any of my comments/threads/especially concerning hi-definition etc....i'm consistent

1) i advocate platform agnosticism........................................no really i am...............................digital files

all the way.............................why? no resolution limits..............no framerate limits...........................use widely available codecs..

and of course, you don't have to worry about filesizes...

2) ok, if i have to push a format............................yeah, i prefer HD DVD over bluray, but that's for my own reasons........

3) the transfer from 35mm format->  nnnnnnnnn format, where nnnnn= High def, dvd, neutral file format, etc.........................

not everyone wants to play around with weird formats, and resolutions.................right????????

so we have to pick something.........................checking out the scans/resolutions and formats for films/video is something i'm very new too..

we have the following standards 4k/2k/HD/SD........................obviously doing 4k is not worth it / price wise/logistically (unless we had a 70mm print)....

that leaves 2k/HD/SD...................................2k is more realistic.................(for archival purposes), but can anybody play 2k files/formats on their

computer, media player? very few.............right........................... HD is a nice intermediate because it deals with known resolutions / frames/ formats..

unfortunately for us, there ARE 2 FORMATS, (despite what adywan says).....HD DVD, and bluray..............although there really isn't ANY TECHNICAL

difference (besides storage size) in using one or the other, they both support similar resolutions/frame rates/etc.........................

so i'm actually shooting for a HD transfer because that's the DE FACTO standard for now................no point in ticking off everyone with a

2182 x 1348 resolution transfer???????????????????????????

i hope this makes some sense, and is not too rambling.................

basically, i am sticking to predetermined formats because they exist............................. also, i respect LUCASFILMS (but not necessarily agree) with

whatever policy they have, and if they never release anything Star wars related in high definition (OOT/SE) etc............thats up to them.........but

it obviously won't stop people here, and like i keep saying, even though the SE is out there in high definition, and people here choose to ignore it,

downplay it, or pay little attention to them.............................that's not Lucasfilms fault......................

Some good points - and I can see where you are coming from, to an extent - but we'll have to agree to disagree on this.

My point is that Ridley obviously CARES about those that love film. He's done his homework. YOU may not want all the versions in Hi Def, and good for you. The biggie here is that you CAN just hire out th ebox set of either the Hi Def versions, OR the normal DVD versions. And each version (apart from the workprint) has stunning picture quality. OK so there may not be the two versions you mention, but there's a HECK of alot here that is! Isn't 5 versions enough?!? Haha!

Watching on a 32" screen the GOUT probably is acceptable, but on my 100" projector it looks pants-cubed!!! Lol!

I hate the half-completed special editions with a passion. Adywans cut really showed what they could and should have been if they really cared. Or if George cared...

However it's the originals I want in a nice pristine quality transfer like ANY number of other original classic films out there. That's why I joined this site :)

You're happy and that's great - I'm happy for you. But I'm still waiting for what I really want...

Cheers,

- John
