Mac Question

Does anyone use their Mac/iMac's wireless connection instead of ethernet? My machine, which is just about 6 months old, is constantly dropping the wireless connection. I've updated the EMI Firmware, taken all available updates, moved it to new locations in my house (I get good signal strength pretty much wherever I go)...still dropping. I find that as long as I don't stop surfing it sticks a lot longer, but as soon as I stop for more than a couple of minutes it's gone. I've got to click on the wireless icon, where I see "Airport: Scanning" and turn it off, then back on. Quite annoying.

Thanks for any help.

Get a PC!  :)

I have the same problem...They are sending me a new wireless box thingy. Of course I live in the UK, so probably couldn't help you even if I wanted to!

I'm not using an Airport base station. Just my 802.11g router.

That happens to me whenever someone uses the cordless phone that sits right next to the router.  But other than that, it's fine.

Try running system update, I know there's been a couple of AirPort fixes in the past few months.

Could it be that your firewall or other security apps are a little too aggressive?  Investigate their settings and controls.

 (Edited)

I use my macbook's wireless to leech off my neighbors' internet....;-P  (at least I think so- it may be the McDonald's across the street)

It's not consistent, though, so I am forced to use my dial-up modem occasionally.

EDIT: BTW, I was actually notified of an Airport software update today.

THE PROBLEM IS IN YOUR SETTING.  DID YOU EXTEND YOUR APPLE CARE?  IF YOU DID YOU CAN SIMPLY CALL APPLE, AND THEY WILL TALK YOU THROUGH SETTING IT UP CORRECTLY.

Or you can just search Google:

Did anybody upgrade to 10.5.4 yet?

Not yet, 10.5.3 screwed up a bit of my memory so that I get kernel panics every time I encode video now, and I'm worried it might get worse with another update.  That and it means I have to restart my computer, which means pausing my downloads, and I'm far too lazy for that.

What kind of problems were you having with Safari?

Author

IT WOULD JUST FREEZE UP ON ME.  I WOULD START IT UP, AND THERE WOULDN'T EVEN BE A BROWSER WINDOW.  I WOULD GET THE SPINNING BEACH BALL OF DEATH.  THE BEST I COULD DO WAS FORCE QUIT SAFARI.  I EVEN WENT AS FAR AS USING APP ZAPPER ON IT.  LUCKILY I HAD FIREFOX, SO I COULD REINSTALL SAFARI.  THEN I HAD PROBLEMS WITH THAT.  I KEPT GETTING THE WARNING THAT I DIDN'T HAVE THE LATEST VERSION OF LEOPARD INSTALLED, SO I COULDN'T INSTALL THE LATEST VERSION OF SAFARI.  WELL, THAT WAS BS.  I HAD THE LATEST VERSION OF LEOPARD.  I FINALLY FOUND AN OLDER VERSION OF SAFARI THAT WOULD INSTALL.

I WENT BACK TO CHECK LEOPARD, AND THE VERSION THAT I THOUGHT I HAD INSTALLED WAS SUDDENLY GONE.  NOW I REMEMBER INSTALLING IT, BECAUSE IT WAS THE 500+MB UPDATE WHICH WAS ON RECORD AS BEING THE LARGEST OS X UPDATE EVER.  THIS REALLY PISSED ME OFF.  SO, I DOWNLOADED THAT UPDATE AGAIN, AND FROM THAT POINT EVERYTHING WAS FINE.  I WAS EVEN ABLE TO UPDATE SAFARI.

THE BIG PROBLEM I'M HAVING NOW IS WITH FIREFOX.  FIREFOX NEVER CRASHED ON ME UNTIL THE 3.0 LAUNCH.  GRANTED I DO VERY LITTLE WITH IT, BUT IT IS NECESSARY FOR ME TO HAVE AND USE.  I WAS SURE THAT 3.1 WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT IT DIDN'T.  I GENERALLY END UP HAVING IT CRASH 2-3 AT STARTUP EVERY TIME, BUT ONCE I HAVE IT STARTED IT RUNS JUST FINE TO A POINT.  IF I'M DOING SOMETHING WHERE I USE THE BACK BROWSER BUTTON A LOT THEN IT WILL FREEZE UP ON ME AROUND THE 30th TIME THAT I GO BACK TO A PREVIOUS AGE.  I THEN HAVE TO FORCE QUIT IT.  THE GOOD THING THOUGH IS THAT I CAN RESTORE MY PREVIOUS SESSION WHICH SAVES ME THE TROUBLE OF HAVING TO REMEMBER WHERE I LEFT OFF.
