I finally remembered my other suggestion!

After the Rebel Transport makes it past the disabled Star Destroyer, they should jump to hyperspace, in order to truly be "away".

I'm having trouble with Rapidshare, so could someone write out Adywan's edited Emperor speech?

Also, can we see a mock-up of the Emperor's new hood?

VADER: What is thy bidding, my master?
EMPEROR: There is a great disturbance in the Force.
VADER: I have felt it.
EMPEROR: We have a new enemy -- young Skywalker.
VADER: Yes, my master.
EMPEROR: He could destroy us.
VADER: He's just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him.
EMPEROR: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi.
VADER: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.
EMPEROR: Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done?
VADER: He will join us or die, my master.

And this is from the teaser:

That's a combination of the old and new Emperor holograms, right?

Is that the final version, or will it be worked on?

Great job, Ady - that sounds perfect!  Can't wait to see what you do with the visuals in that scene later on.

Wow, it sounds really natural when he says 'young Skywalker.' :) It's a shame there isn't a clip of McDiarmid saying Luke with the proper phlegm level. If anyone knows where he lives, maybe go to his door and say "sir, could you please say 'Luke' into this microphone the way you would as the Emperor?" Heh.

Well, its a nice splice and since you want to go back to the original dialogue I guess it will have to do.  Personally, I never liked the whole scene since it creates more questions than it answers, especially with the old dialogue.  I still think you should reconsider other avenues but it seems you've made up your mind.  There ARE ways to make it fit into the entire story and still make it make sense.  The whole debate is a which came first "vader's knowledge or the Emperor's knowledge" of Luke's existence and heritage and who's telling who what.  Keeping the lines the way they were makes it that both know of his existence and the Emperor is just now realizing Luke as a threat so he elevates the threat from yellow to red.  The way Clive Reville said it, it seemed that he was expecting Vader's answer and was pleased with his response.  Now, with Ian's delivery "Yes. Yes." sounds like he just got some great idea from Vader.  I don't buy it.  No matter how much we like Vader's character, he is still a puppet on a string.  He is scheming behind Palpy's back, but he is still his bitch.  Hell, even Tarkin slapped him around.

I agree with most things so far on this edit of yours but my two cents are that this is a mistake.  The lines shouldn't stay as they are originally or 2004 DVD's.  They should be reworked along the lines of MusicMan's idea.  It never made sense, and in 2004 it was a poor attempt to make it do so.

I vote no.

The whole scene was pretty clear to me, even as a 10 year old when it first came out, and to hell of a lot of other people. Even with Reville's delivery of "Yes..yes" (and Ian only says it once now, not twice) it was clear that Vader had just given him the idea of turning Luke to the dark side instead of just destroying him. They BOTH know about Lukes existence. Word would have reached far and wide in the galaxy about the person who destroyed the Death Star so the Emperor would have definitely have known his name. Vader is using the search for the rebellion as an excuse to find his son. He wants him to turn to the dark side and overthrow the Emperor and become the master (just see the end of the movie for proof of that). That's why he gives the Emperor the idea of turning him instead. The Emperor wouldn't have thought Luke a major threat and deemed him unimportant because there were no Jedi's (as far as he knew) that would be able to teach Luke after Obi-Wan died, so his powers would not be able to grow beyond what they were already. But Luke has now gone to Dagobah and met Yoda, which causes a tremor in the force. "We have a new enemy" = a new Jedi. He now knows he can be a threat. The original dialogue NEVER needed to be changed and certainly not to the horrible writing of the new version. The dialogue sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the writing of the rest of the movie. And the lines are back to how they were originally (apart from substituting "Luke Skywalker" for "Young Skywalker" due to having no usable audio of Ian saying "Luke")

I don't know if you could do this, Adywan, but I liked how in the original version Reville said "yes" twice, with a pause inbetween, like he took a second to ponder it after agreeing.  Is it possible to somehow edit McDiarmid's dialogue so that he does the same?  Or maybe apply a series of filters to Reville's dialogue, and add one of the "yes"'s to the '04 dialogue?  I understand what I'm asking for may (and probably is) be ridiculous, but I think that if it could be done it would work well.

Thats why I don't like the McDiarmid version. It doesn't work in the context of "Vader suggests it, Palpatine hadn't thought of that angle but likes it." The SE makes it seem like maybe Palpatine is faking it, and maybe Vader's faking it--whether due to deliberate design, or, more likely IMO simply poor performance/constuction, as the scene is totally unclear. The Revill version was "yeah, yeah thats a pretty good idea now that you mention it," while the McDiarmid version is more like "yeah, um, [shifty eyes], yeah I was going to say the same thing, thats right." The reason I liked Goodmusicians version is because it actually injected ACTING into the scene, theres character motivation and subtext showing: Vader tries to make excuses for why they should ignore Luke, Palpatine sees through them, then Vader plays his backup card of turning him instead of killing him, and Palpatine decides that will suffice, to which Vader reassures him Luke will join or die. This doesn't work dramatically in the SE the way it is IMO. The original edit works in terms of what I wrote in my first sentence but not the way McDiarmid plays it; there needs to be a pause so you can see the thought process after he says "yes."

Adywan the scene when R2 is outside of Yoda's  in the rain on looks up in the window and whistles and toots  it is a recycled wistle from the scene in episode IV when R2 refuses to show LuKe the hologram and Luke leaves the grage,   when R2 is saying "do you think he likes me" I suppos that is what R2 saying, and then C3PO says "and no and I dont like you either".  It's a small thing but it always stuck out as being the same response from R2. What do you think

I am looking to add the other "yes" because i don't like the single version as it exists in the 2004 SE. It's only a rough track but i changed the timing on some of of Ian's speech to help eliminate the long drawn out syllables in his delivery and also so i can add the extra "yes" once i can find something suitable

EXACTLY!!!!! Just as I too have always understood it! As with SW:R, I can rest easy knowing Empire is in excellent hands!

Way back when in the Darth Editous Star Wars thread, DE himself posted a version of McDiarmid saying yes twice, one slightly drawn out, with a pause. It messed up the music, but the intent was simply to hear him say it twice with a different inflection, and the music fix would be done later. Here's the post: (link)

Unfortunately, that mp3 link he posted doesn't work now. I still have it, but it's stuck on my corrupted hard drive. :p But maybe someone will remember it and be able to post it here if they still have it!

P.S. Weyseed posted this pic in DE's Star Wars thread:

I think the original looks like the baddest dude in the cosmos compared to McDiarmid. Haha.

Maybe you can borrow a "yes" from ROTJ or ROTS?

yeah, you can use the " Yes, I assue you line" from ROTJ.

I like ben_danger's idea to see the emperor in his office on Coruscant.

The one thing that has always bothered me is how short (at least on film) Luke's training is in SW5.  I know there were several more training scenes planed but were ever filmed. I don't see how this could be adressed.  I'm not saying it is necessary, but maybe an extra 30s to 1 min of some training related scenes would be nice. It would make Vader's line 'Obi Van has thaught you well' even better (Vader doesn't know Yoda has trained Luke).

Author
Time

Yeah, one of the extra training things that was in the novel, at least, was that Luke had to slice through a metal bar with his lightsaber seven times before it hit the ground, right? (did they intend to film that, too?) And I seem to remember different sources said different numbers of slices.

I was just looking through T-bone's cut scenes section yesterday, and he had panels from the comic where Yoda is berating Luke that "a Jedi could have cut this into 7 pieces!" and then he had a picture of a rod cut into 7 pieces, made but never filmed.  I would have loved for there to be more training montage, especially if it was set to "Eye of the Tiger". :-D

Ripplin: Yes, I think I read on the T-bone's site that even an actual metal bar prop was made for that scene.

005, yes, a short montage would be nice, but how to do it beats me. What material to use?

Oh, there's nothing we can use, unless we use shots from Rocky and Karate Kid with Mark Hamill's face pasted over the characters.  I just meant that I wish Kershner had filmed more.
