Waterworld ABC Cut? A ton of info - see McFly's posts for details (Released) — Page 16

Those look beautiful! Suggestions:

1) I'm having a hard time with the guy with the telescope on the back, a complaint made worse by the fact that it was MY IDEA! I think it was better without him.

2) I just added another Special Feature (sorry!) For both discs: "Subtitle Track that informs which scenes were deleted"

3) Also, I used the font Copperplate Gothic Bold on all my menus, so if we're going for unity, you could toss that in (though really I think it looks fine the way it is). It's really a nice cover.

Also, if anybody wanted to include (in whole or in part) my "About" writeup from the DVD menus, here it is:

Waterworld: The Ulysses Cut is a fan-made preservation of the extended cut of Waterworld which has been aired on television but never released on home video. Waterworld is a film notoriously re-cut by the studio after locking the director out of the editing room, and this preservation is an attempt to show some 40 minutes worth of material that was exised.

To do this, a number of television broadcasts were compared and compiled with the goal of presenting the most complete version so far, including the extended television scenes as well as the original theatrical obscenities.

This two-disc set has been made possible by the Original Trilogy forums (www.originaltrilogy.com), with particular contributions from ReverendBeastly, shepp74, and Jaiman Tuckuh.

Before owning this, you should have already purchased the Theatrical Cut from Universal. This extended version should be freely distributed and shared until such time as Universal decides to fund and release a proper Director's Cut. If such a thing ever comes to be, this disc should be recycled in the pit.

Wow! I love it when we have a difficult time choosing which sweet cover to print!

Those are both spectacular, guys.

Here's another humble possibility for the description...

"Uncensored, uncut. With 45 minutes of additional footage (excised from the theatrical print), this has every deleted moment ever shown on TV, as well as language, violence, and brief nudity from the theatrical version. The result is a more complete story - characters are fleshed out, questions are answered, backstory is given, and plot holes are filled. 'The Mariner' even gets a name."

"Open-matte - a lot more vertical picture, than the theatrical presentation, with very little cropped from the sides, so it's much nicer than the typical 4:3."

Of course, the 2nd block is unnessecary, because of the new special feature comparing open-matte to theatrical.

And I can't think of a better way to say this part:

Well done Mcfly89 for finishing this one, I just looked back through the thread and I last posted nearly 2 years ago asking for a copy of this before you got involved. I can't wait to get a copy, not that I know when I'll get the chance to watch it.

Thanks for all the hard work.

I have never seen the longer cut of this film.  Does it improve it in any way like the longer cut of the postman?

[Professor Farnsworth voice]

Oh my, yes!

[/Professor Farnsworth voice]. I haven't seen The Postman yet, but yeah, it's substantially improved.

The extended version is a well-rounded movie, that's a lot easier to take seriously. It flows very well. And the calmer bits aren't boring. Obviously, there's T.B.S. (Tired Butt Syndrome), but it's worth it.

The theatrical was recut into just another standard action film. ThesePeopleAreGoingThroughThisShitNowIt'sDone. It made minor plot holes, and got rid of a lot of characterization, interaction, backstory (and vauge stuff about the past). It was a pro job, though, there are loads of small trims and segments removed; not just full scenes hacked out (lots more edits than I can keep track of).

Of course, the extended isn't fully polished. And there's stuff that was apparently thrown in as padding, for tv run-time. The director would've probably wanted some more tweaks and trims. So it does call for a fan edit.

An alternate scene-bit is carelessly tossed in --- The old professor suddenly figures out the direction of dry land --- twice. :)

Edit: But I don't want my enthusiasm to get your expectations too high.

McFly presents a more complete review, below. (And I agree with it).

Firstly, where can I see this LONGER cut of The Postman? I'd love to see it!

To answer your question, it was tempting to do a fan edit and hack away the crap, but I opted to put everything in and leave the editing to others. I disagree with Jaiman in that I think it is uneven to watch the three hour version, which is probably why it was created as a "Two Night Event." It's flow is impaired by the fact that they wanted to make it as long as possible. By the time they see dryland, you just want the movie to end (even in the theatrical) but it just goes on and on...

You'd do fine to watch Disc 1 today and then Disc 2 tomorrow, so you're still interested by the time you get to the end. The padding in the action scenes is silly, and I'd rather watch the theatrical for those. Where the extended version really shines is in character development and in placing us in the environment and letting us see the people who live there and how they live. It's a post-apocalypse movie, so this is KEY! Probably more than 50% of the scenes that make me laugh were cut from the theatrical! We get much more of Dennis Hopper being outrageously over-the-top, and a number of minor characters who prove to be amusing. One such character moment opens my final trailer, where Kevin Costner has just run over one of the Deacon's men on a jet-ski. This is the response:

here is my updated cover art for this project. I made a prety similar one for the first project of this kind some time ago and was asked and fed with info by Jaiman Tuckuh. http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/8833/previewcg0.jpg I have used Copperlate Gothic Bold as font to match the DVD menus. if you like it, you can download it here: Mediafire

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

hi everybody,

the past 30 minutes where pretty exciting as i was reading trough the many postings of this thread. since i heard of the extended version broadcasted in the us i was eager to have a look at it myself. but unfortunatly back here in germany whe are as always at the bottom of the entertainment food chain and so i propably will never see it... but now as i've discovered your impresive work there is again hope and a ray of light in my otherwise hopeless existence :)

so what the hell am i supposed to do to get my fingers on a copy of that??? and yes, i actually do own a original copy from universal on dvd, so this shouldn't be a problem :)

anyway, i'd like to thank you in advance for the promising work you've done for this in my opinion much underated sci fi flick. it may not be art, but sometimes i like to be 12 years old again and go for an adventure.

good day

Welcome to the forum, gammler!

It'll be released soon. I expect McFly will torrent it, or someone will. I'll help seed. Then I'll post it to the newsgroups. Then it'll probably end up on Rapidshare. And it will be traded around. Might get PIF'd. So you'll probably be able to get it one of those ways.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

I'm waiting on edskizzorhands for his completed cover. If I don't get it within the week, I'll just post the torrent as-is and viewers can download his cover separately. I know you guys have waited a long time!

Dang it.  I had the TV version of Braveheart on VHS for years.  I recently moved and tossed it because I haven't watched it in years.  Sorry. It's gone.
